CHAPTER 6 — CASSANDRA'S REVENGE

CHAPTER 6 — CASSANDRA'S REVENGE

By sunrise, Leah Carter had lost almost everything she thought she could rely on.

Her job.

Her privacy.

Her mother's reputation.

And, most painfully, the simple story she had spent her entire life believing about her family.

Her mother had died in an accident.

Her father had died in an accident.

She had grown up poor because life had simply been cruel.

That was the story.

It had never been true.

Now Leah sat in the back of Daniel Blackwood's car, staring through the rain-streaked window as the city woke around them.

Samuel Reed sat in the passenger seat.

Daniel drove.

Nobody spoke.

They were heading toward the old Blackwood chapel.

Toward a vault.

Toward whatever Margaret had died trying to protect.

But before they reached it, Daniel's phone began ringing.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression hardened.

“Who is it?” Leah asked.

“My attorney.”

“Answer it.”

Daniel hesitated.

Then accepted the call.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel, where are you?”

“Why?”

“Because the board is holding an emergency meeting.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“They're removing you.”

Silence.

Leah's heart tightened.

“On what grounds?”

The attorney continued.

“Conflict of interest. Financial misconduct. And an allegation that you attempted to manipulate your mother's estate.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“That is ridiculous.”

“I know.”

“Who filed the complaint?”

Another pause.

“Cassandra Whitmore.”

Daniel's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Of course.”

The attorney continued.

“And Daniel…”

“What?”

“They have evidence.”

Daniel looked at Leah.

“What evidence?”

“Bank transfers.”

“What bank transfers?”

“Transfers from Blackwood accounts into an account under your name.”

Daniel's face went pale.

“I never authorized those.”

“I know.”

“Then someone forged them.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

The attorney's voice became quieter.

“We don't know yet.”

The call ended.

Leah stared at Daniel.

“Cassandra.”

He nodded.

“She started her revenge.”

THE FIRST ATTACK

By eight o'clock, the story was everywhere.

BLACKWOOD HEIR ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD

DANIEL BLACKWOOD UNDER INVESTIGATION

FAMILY POWER STRUGGLE TURNS UGLY

Leah watched the headlines on her phone.

Then she saw her own name.

Her stomach dropped.

MYSTERY WAITRESS LINKED TO BLACKWOOD INHERITANCE BATTLE

Another headline appeared.

WHO IS LEAH CARTER?

And another.

BLACKWOOD HEIR'S SECRET ROMANTIC CONNECTION?

Leah's face burned.

“They're saying we're together.”

Daniel looked at her.

“They're trying to discredit you.”

“They're calling me a gold digger.”

“I know.”

“I've known you for one day.”

“I know.”

“They're saying I targeted your family.”

Daniel shook his head.

“They're scared.”

Leah looked at him.

“Of what?”

“The truth.”

The attacks became worse.

By noon, Leah's restaurant had terminated her employment.

The manager called her personally.

“I'm sorry.”

“You're firing me?”

“We don't have a choice.”

“Because of a newspaper article?”

“Because three of our biggest clients threatened to pull their accounts.”

Leah closed her eyes.

“Who?”

The manager hesitated.

“Blackwood Foundation donors.”

Of course.

Cassandra had started cutting away every support Leah had.

Her job.

Her reputation.

Her income.

Her friends.

Her credibility.

And it was working.

When Leah returned to her apartment, there were reporters outside.

Someone had already posted her address online.

She couldn't get through the front entrance.

A woman shouted:

“Leah! Did you sleep with Daniel Blackwood to get money?”

Another reporter yelled:

“Did your mother work for the Blackwoods?”

“Is it true you're trying to inherit millions?”

“Are you Daniel's secret girlfriend?”

Leah turned around.

She couldn't breathe.

Daniel stepped in front of her.

“Back away.”

Cameras flashed.

One reporter pushed closer.

“Mr. Blackwood, is Leah Carter the reason your family is fighting?”

Daniel's expression became ice-cold.

“She is the reason my family is about to face the truth.”

The cameras erupted.

But Daniel wasn't finished.

“Anyone who harasses her will hear from my attorneys.”

He took Leah's hand.

They walked away.

Leah pulled her hand free.

“Don't.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“Don't make them think we're together.”

“I don't care what they think.”

“I do.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't want to become another weapon they use against you.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You aren't a weapon.”

“Then what am I?”

He didn't answer immediately.

“You're the first person in years who hasn't wanted something from me.”

Leah looked away.

“I want the truth.”

Daniel nodded.

“So do I.”

CASSANDRA

Across the city, Cassandra Whitmore sat in a private club overlooking the river.

She held a glass of wine.

Victor sat opposite her.

“You went too far,” he said.

Cassandra smiled.

“Did I?”

“You brought Leah into it.”

“She was already in it.”

“She doesn't know what she's involved in.”

“Neither does Daniel.”

Victor leaned closer.

“You were supposed to destroy Daniel's credibility.”

“I am.”

“Not expose the trust.”

“I haven't.”

Victor watched her carefully.

“You're enjoying this.”

Cassandra smiled.

“You have no idea.”

She placed a folder on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Leah leaving work.

Leah entering Daniel's car.

Leah with Evelyn.

Leah standing outside the Blackwood estate.

Cassandra tapped one photograph.

“This is enough to make her look like a manipulator.”

Victor frowned.

“You're obsessed.”

“No.”

Cassandra's smile disappeared.

“I'm angry.”

“At what?”

“At Margaret.”

Victor went silent.

Cassandra stared at the photograph.

“She ruined my life.”

TWENTY-THREE YEARS AGO

Cassandra had loved Edward Blackwood.

At least she believed she had.

Edward had promised her everything.

Power.

Money.

A place beside him.

But Margaret discovered their affair.

She threatened to expose them.

Not because she was jealous.

Because Edward had begun using Cassandra to move money out of the Blackwood trust.

Margaret discovered the transfers.

She confronted him.

Edward denied everything.

Then he threatened her.

Cassandra had watched from the hallway.

She had seen the fear in Margaret's eyes.

She had done nothing.

That was the moment everything changed.

Margaret never trusted her again.

And Cassandra never forgave Margaret for making her feel guilty.

Years later, Cassandra had built a new life.

A wealthy husband.

A powerful social circle.

A respected foundation.

But Margaret's daughter had appeared.

And with her came the past.

Leah had inherited Margaret's eyes.

Her stubbornness.

Her refusal to bow.

Cassandra hated that.

Because every time she looked at Leah—

She saw Margaret.

THE SECOND ATTACK

That evening, Leah received an email.

The subject line:

YOU SHOULD KNOW WHAT YOUR MOTHER DID.

She opened it.

A photograph appeared.

Margaret standing outside a hospital.

Underneath:

YOUR MOTHER WASN'T A HERO.

Then another photograph.

Margaret arguing with Edward.

Then another.

Margaret holding an envelope.

Then a final image.

Margaret crying.

The message continued:

She destroyed innocent people to protect Evelyn Blackwood.

Leah stared at the screen.

Daniel entered the room.

“What happened?”

She handed him the phone.

He read everything.

“This is fabricated.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I know my father.”

Leah looked at him.

“Do you?”

Daniel stopped.

The question hurt.

Because he no longer knew anyone.

A second message arrived.

This time it contained a video.

Leah pressed play.

Her mother appeared.

The footage was grainy.

She was sitting in a room.

Across from someone.

A man's voice could be heard.

“Tell me where the documents are.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I won't.”

“You understand what happens next.”

“I don't care.”

The man slammed his fist against the table.

Leah covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then Margaret spoke.

“If you hurt my daughter, I will tell Evelyn everything.”

The video stopped.

Leah's hands shook.

“That's my mother.”

“Yes.”

“She was threatened because of me.”

Daniel nodded.

“And Cassandra has this.”

Leah looked at him.

“Where did she get it?”

Daniel's face hardened.

“From someone inside the family.”

They traced the video.

The metadata showed it had been uploaded that morning.

But the original file had been created twenty-three years ago.

There was only one problem.

The recording had been stored on a Blackwood server.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“The archive.”

“What?”

“The person who broke into the archive last night didn't just search for documents.”

Leah understood.

“They copied files.”

“Yes.”

“Who has access?”

“Three people.”

“Who?”

“My mother.”

“Evelyn wouldn't.”

“My uncle Victor.”

“And?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Cassandra.”

Leah whispered:

“She wants revenge.”

Daniel nodded.

“But revenge for what?”

Before he could answer, Evelyn entered.

She had heard the last sentence.

“Because she believes Margaret stole Edward from her.”

Leah turned.

“Was she his lover?”

Evelyn nodded.

“For years.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“My father cheated on you?”

“Yes.”

“And you knew?”

“I knew.”

“Why did you stay?”

Evelyn's eyes filled with sadness.

“Because there were children involved.”

Daniel looked away.

Then Evelyn added:

“Not you.”

Daniel looked back.

“There was another child.”

Silence.

Leah's heart began racing.

“Whose child?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mother.”

Evelyn whispered:

“Cassandra had a son.”

Leah stared.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“His name was Adrian.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Adrian Whitmore?”

Evelyn nodded.

Leah remembered the name.

She had seen it in Blackwood financial records.

A missing heir.

A man who supposedly died young.

Daniel whispered:

“He wasn't Cassandra's son.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“He was Edward's.”

THE MAN WHO NEVER DIED

That night, Daniel searched the archives.

Adrian Whitmore had supposedly died in a boating accident at seventeen.

No body.

No funeral photograph.

No medical record.

No death certificate available in the public archive.

Leah stared at the screen.

“That's not normal.”

“No.”

Daniel opened another file.

The name had been erased.

Then he found a private insurance record.

Adrian Whitmore.

Alive.

Thirty-eight years old.

Current address unknown.

Leah looked at Daniel.

“Cassandra has been lying.”

“Yes.”

“About her son.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Because if Adrian is alive…”

Leah finished the sentence.

“He could be another heir.”

Evelyn appeared behind them.

Her voice was barely audible.

“He isn't just another heir.”

They turned.

“What do you mean?”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Adrian was the reason Edward created the trust.”

Daniel froze.

“Why?”

“Because Edward knew that one day the truth about both of his sons would come out.”

Leah's eyes widened.

“Both?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Daniel.”

She pointed at him.

“Adrian.”

Then she looked at Leah.

“And you.”

Three people.

Three bloodlines.

One trust.

One fortune.

And twenty-three years of murder, lies, and betrayal.

CASSANDRA'S FINAL MOVE

At midnight, Cassandra entered the Blackwood Manor chapel.

She carried a key.

The same key Margaret had once used.

She walked beneath the altar.

Opened a hidden panel.

And descended into darkness.

The private vault waited below.

She entered a code.

The door opened.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Cassandra walked directly to one cabinet.

She opened it.

MARGARET CARTER.

She removed the file.

Then another.

DANIEL BLACKWOOD.

Then another.

LEAH CARTER.

She smiled.

But the smile disappeared when she saw a fourth file.

ADRIAN WHITMORE.

The file was empty.

Except for one sentence.

HE KNOWS EVERYTHING.

Cassandra's hand began to shake.

A voice came from behind her.

“You shouldn't have opened that.”

She turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Tall.

His face half-hidden in shadow.

Cassandra stepped backward.

“No.”

The man smiled.

“You've been looking for me.”

Cassandra whispered:

“Adrian?”

He stepped into the light.

It was him.

The son she had claimed was dead.

The man who had disappeared twenty-one years earlier.

The man Margaret had once tried to protect.

Adrian looked at the files.

Then at Cassandra.

“You blamed Margaret for everything.”

Cassandra's eyes filled with fear.

“You're dead.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“I was hiding.”

“Why?”

“Because Margaret asked me to.”

Cassandra froze.

“Margaret knew?”

“She knew everything.”

“Then why didn't she tell anyone?”

Adrian looked at the file marked LEAH CARTER.

“Because she knew who would die if she did.”

Cassandra whispered:

“Who?”

Adrian answered:

“You.”

Cassandra stepped backward.

Adrian continued:

“But Margaret made one mistake.”

“What?”

“She trusted me.”

Cassandra stared.

“What did you do?”

Adrian smiled.

“I gave the files to someone else.”

“Who?”

He turned toward the vault door.

A shadow appeared behind him.

A woman stepped into the light.

Cassandra's face went white.

Evelyn.

Cassandra whispered:

“You?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“You thought I was powerless.”

Cassandra's lips trembled.

“But you were sick.”

“I was pretending.”

Silence.

Evelyn took the file from Cassandra's hand.

“You spent twenty-three years believing you were controlling this family.”

She looked at Leah's file.

“You were never the one holding the power.”

Cassandra suddenly smiled.

“You still don't understand.”

Evelyn frowned.

Cassandra looked toward the door.

“Because Adrian isn't the only person who survived.”

A man's voice came from the darkness behind them.

“She's right.”

Evelyn froze.

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

But he wasn't alone.

Beside him stood Samuel.

And behind them—

A man Leah had never seen before.

Older.

Pale.

With the same eyes as Daniel.

The man looked at Leah.

Then whispered:

“Hello, sister.”

Leah's blood ran cold.

Daniel stared at him.

“Who are you?”

The man smiled.

“I think you already know.”

He looked toward Cassandra.

“Your mother lied about my death.”

Then he looked at Leah.

“And Margaret lied about something even bigger.”

Leah couldn't breathe.

“What?”

The man stepped into the light.

“I am Thomas Carter's first son.”

Daniel's face went white.

“And you're not.”

He looked at Leah.

“His only daughter.”

Silence.

Then he placed an old envelope on the table.

Margaret's handwriting was visible on the front.

FOR LEAH — OPEN ONLY AFTER YOU MEET YOUR BROTHER.

Leah stared at it.

There were two brothers.

Not one.

May you like

And Margaret had spent her entire life hiding them all.
