CHAPTER 8 — The Night They Tried to Silence Her

CHAPTER 8 — The Night They Tried to Silence Her

Charlotte had three seconds to decide whether to run.

Vivian stood in the doorway.

Two security officers stood behind her.

A police detective waited farther down the corridor.

And in Charlotte's hands was the evidence that could destroy them all.

She smiled.

"Under whose authority?"

Vivian lifted the court order.

"The Solmere board."

Charlotte glanced at Daniel.

He was staring at the document.

His expression told her everything.

It was real.

Or convincing enough to fool everyone.

Vivian stepped into the room.

"Give me the files."

Charlotte didn't move.

"Which files?"

"All of them."

"Why?"

"Because they're confidential company property."

Charlotte raised the binder.

"This?"

"Yes."

"Then why does it contain evidence of criminal activity?"

Vivian's face tightened.

"You have no right to determine that."

Charlotte smiled.

"Neither do you."

The detective stepped forward.

"Miss Vale, I strongly recommend that you cooperate."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Are you arresting me?"

"Not yet."

"Then I'm leaving."

The detective blocked the doorway.

"You can't."

Charlotte glanced at Daniel.

He whispered:

"Don't fight them."

She understood.

That was exactly what they wanted.

A confrontation.

A scene.

Another video.

Another headline.

Another reason for the public to believe Charlotte was unstable.

So she lowered the binder.

"Fine."

Vivian smiled.

"Good."

Charlotte handed it over.

Vivian took it.

Then Charlotte whispered:

"You're going to regret opening it."

Vivian's smile disappeared.

The binder contained nothing.

Charlotte had removed the original evidence thirty seconds earlier.

The real documents were hidden inside her coat.

The binder contained blank pages.

Copies of old hotel menus.

And one handwritten note.

You already lost.

Vivian flipped through the pages.

Her face slowly changed.

"Where are the documents?"

Charlotte smiled.

"What documents?"

Vivian looked at the security officers.

"Search her."

Daniel stepped forward.

"No."

The detective looked at him.

"Mr. Cross."

"You don't have probable cause."

Vivian snapped:

"She stole corporate property."

"Then prove it."

Vivian glared at him.

Daniel stood beside Charlotte.

For the first time, he wasn't investigating her.

He was protecting her.

Vivian noticed.

"So you've chosen a side."

Daniel's voice was cold.

"I chose the truth."

Vivian laughed.

"You have no idea what you've chosen."

Then the lights went out.

Complete darkness.

Someone screamed.

A body crashed against the wall.

Charlotte felt a hand grab her wrist.

She almost cried out.

Then Daniel whispered:

"Me."

He pulled her backward.

"Move."

They ran.

Behind them, Vivian shouted:

"Don't let them escape!"

Charlotte followed Daniel through the hidden corridor.

They descended a narrow staircase.

Footsteps thundered behind them.

"Where are we going?"

"Loading dock."

"Security will be there."

"Not if we move fast."

Charlotte clutched the evidence beneath her coat.

The data drive was small.

Barely the size of her thumb.

But it contained everything.

Bank transfers.

Board communications.

Forged documents.

Encrypted messages.

Names.

Dates.

And one final folder Eleanor had hidden beneath the financial records.

Charlotte had seen its title.

ORIGIN.

She hadn't opened it yet.

She didn't have time.

They reached the basement.

Daniel pushed open a metal door.

Cold air hit Charlotte's face.

The loading dock was empty.

"Car?"

"Two blocks away."

They ran.

Charlotte's shoes slipped on wet pavement.

Behind them, alarms began screaming.

A black SUV turned the corner.

Daniel grabbed Charlotte.

"Down!"

The vehicle accelerated.

It passed within feet of them.

Charlotte hit the pavement.

The SUV crashed through a security gate.

Daniel pulled her up.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Good."

"Who was that?"

"I don't know."

Charlotte looked toward the road.

The SUV disappeared into traffic.

Then she noticed something.

A small black object on the ground.

She picked it up.

A tracking device.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"They tracked the files."

Charlotte looked at him.

"No."

She held it up.

"They tracked me."

They reached Daniel's car.

He started the engine.

Charlotte locked the doors.

"Where are we going?"

"Somewhere safe."

"Where?"

"I have a house outside the city."

"Does Richard know about it?"

"No."

"Does anyone?"

"No."

"Then let's go."

Daniel accelerated.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Charlotte stared out the window.

Then she noticed headlights behind them.

A black sedan.

It followed.

"Daniel."

"I see it."

The sedan stayed three cars behind.

Daniel changed lanes.

So did the sedan.

He turned onto another road.

The sedan followed.

Charlotte's heart began pounding.

"Can you lose them?"

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"There's more than one."

She looked in the side mirror.

Another car appeared.

Then another.

Three vehicles.

Closing in.

Daniel cursed under his breath.

"They're not trying to scare us."

"What are they trying to do?"

"Stop us."

The first vehicle rammed them.

Charlotte screamed.

Daniel fought the steering wheel.

The car spun.

Glass shattered.

The evidence drive slipped from Charlotte's hand.

"Where is it?"

"Forget it!"

"No!"

Charlotte searched the floor.

Another impact.

The car slammed into a barrier.

Daniel's head struck the window.

Charlotte grabbed his shoulder.

"Daniel!"

"I'm fine."

He wasn't.

Blood ran from his forehead.

The pursuing vehicle stopped.

Doors opened.

Men stepped out.

Charlotte froze.

Daniel looked at her.

"Run."

"What?"

"Run now."

He shoved open his door.

Charlotte grabbed the evidence.

They escaped through a narrow alley.

Gunshots echoed behind them.

Charlotte's heart pounded.

She ran until her lungs burned.

Then she heard someone shouting.

"Charlotte!"

Daniel.

She turned.

He was still running.

Then a gunshot cracked through the night.

Daniel stumbled.

Charlotte screamed.

"Daniel!"

He fell.

She ran back.

"You're hit!"

Daniel looked down.

His shoulder was bleeding.

"It's a graze."

"We need a hospital."

"No."

"You're bleeding."

"If we go to a hospital, they'll find us."

Charlotte tore a piece from her sleeve.

"Then stop arguing."

She pressed it against his wound.

Daniel winced.

"You're surprisingly calm."

"I'm not calm."

"You look calm."

"I'm terrified."

He smiled faintly.

"Good."

"Good?"

"Fear keeps people alive."

Another sound came from the street.

Charlotte froze.

"They're coming."

Daniel looked around.

"There."

An abandoned warehouse.

They slipped inside.

The warehouse was dark.

Cold.

Silent.

Charlotte helped Daniel sit behind a stack of crates.

She checked the wound.

"You're lucky."

"I know."

"Don't move."

"Bossy."

"Shut up."

For the first time that night, Daniel laughed.

Then Charlotte heard footsteps.

Outside.

One man said:

"They're inside."

Another answered:

"Search everything."

Charlotte covered her mouth.

Daniel reached for her hand.

They stayed perfectly still.

The warehouse door opened.

Flashlights swept across the room.

One beam passed inches from Charlotte's face.

She held her breath.

Then the lights moved away.

The men searched for nearly ten minutes.

Finally—

"Nothing."

The door closed.

Charlotte waited.

Thirty seconds.

A minute.

Then she whispered:

"They're gone."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"What?"

"That was the first team."

Charlotte stared at him.

"How do you know?"

He pointed toward the window.

Three silhouettes stood outside.

Watching.

Charlotte's stomach dropped.

They were surrounded.

Daniel slowly stood.

"We need another exit."

Charlotte looked around.

"There."

A service tunnel.

They crawled through.

The tunnel led beneath the warehouse.

Charlotte held the evidence drive tightly.

At the end was a rusted ladder.

They climbed.

The hatch opened into an alley.

Empty.

For now.

They ran.

After several blocks, Daniel stopped.

A small building stood ahead.

An old church.

He opened the side door.

They entered.

An elderly caretaker looked at them.

Then looked at Daniel.

"You're late."

Charlotte froze.

"You know him?"

The caretaker nodded.

"Your mother told me you might come."

Charlotte stepped forward.

"My mother?"

The caretaker smiled sadly.

"She prepared for this."

He led them downstairs.

There was a small room beneath the church.

A table.

Two chairs.

A telephone.

And an old safe.

Charlotte stared.

"What is this?"

"A place your mother used when she needed to disappear."

Daniel looked around.

"I didn't know about this."

The caretaker smiled.

"That's why she chose it."

Charlotte approached the safe.

"What's inside?"

"Something she wanted you to have."

The caretaker handed her a key.

Charlotte opened it.

Inside was a laptop.

An old notebook.

And a sealed envelope.

The envelope had her name on it.

CHARLOTTE.

Her hands shook.

She opened it.

Her mother's handwriting appeared.

My dearest Charlotte,

If you are reading this, they have finally come for you.

Do not trust anyone simply because they claim to love me.

Do not trust anyone simply because they claim to protect you.

Trust evidence.

Trust patterns.

And above all, trust yourself.

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

The letter continued.

There is one person who will try to convince you that your father betrayed me.

He didn't.

There is another who will insist that Daniel Cross betrayed you.

He didn't.

But both men have secrets.

And those secrets must be exposed before you can understand why I died.

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

He was reading over her shoulder.

Then she saw the final line.

The person who ordered my death is closer to you than you think.

Charlotte stopped breathing.

The old laptop suddenly turned on.

A video appeared.

Eleanor Vale.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

Charlotte stared at her mother's face.

"Mom..."

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, I'm already dead."

Charlotte covered her mouth.

Eleanor continued.

"I need you to understand something."

She looked frightened.

"Solmere was never just a hotel company."

Charlotte frowned.

"It was built around a trust."

Daniel leaned closer.

Eleanor continued.

"A trust containing assets worth billions."

Charlotte's eyes widened.

"But the money isn't the most important part."

Eleanor paused.

"The most important asset is information."

The screen changed.

Documents appeared.

Government contracts.

International accounts.

Private agreements.

Secret acquisitions.

Charlotte stared.

Eleanor continued.

"Your grandfather discovered something decades ago."

The video showed an old photograph.

"Someone had been using Solmere to move money for powerful people."

Daniel's face hardened.

"Money laundering."

Charlotte looked at him.

Eleanor continued.

"Politicians. Executives. Criminal organizations."

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"And when I tried to stop them, they came for my family."

The screen flickered.

Eleanor leaned toward the camera.

"Charlotte, if they come after you, do not fight them alone."

Then she said something that made Charlotte's heart stop.

"Find the woman named Isabelle."

The video ended.

Charlotte stared at the black screen.

"Isabelle."

Daniel nodded.

"Jonathan's sister."

"But she's supposed to be dead."

"She's alive."

"Where?"

"We don't know."

The caretaker spoke quietly.

"I do."

Charlotte turned.

The old man looked at her.

"Your mother told me where Isabelle went."

"Where?"

He hesitated.

"She went underground."

"Where?"

"Paris."

Charlotte's eyes widened.

"Paris?"

The caretaker nodded.

"But before you go..."

He pointed toward the laptop.

"There's another file."

Charlotte opened it.

A folder appeared.

ORIGIN.

The same folder from the hidden office.

She clicked.

A single document opened.

It was a bank transfer.

The amount:

$500,000,000.

The sender:

SOLMERE TRUST.

The recipient:

CROSS FOUNDATION.

Daniel stared.

"My father's foundation."

Charlotte scrolled down.

The date was twenty-seven years ago.

The day before the hotel fire.

Then she saw the authorization signature.

Daniel's father's signature.

Arthur Cross.

But beneath it was another signature.

Eleanor Vale.

Charlotte's mother.

And beneath both:

JONATHAN ASHFORD.

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

"Your father, my mother, and my father moved half a billion dollars the day before the fire."

Daniel shook his head.

"That makes no sense."

"Unless they were trying to hide the money."

"From Richard."

Charlotte stared at the screen.

"Or from whoever ordered the fire."

A new notification appeared.

The laptop had received an incoming message.

No sender.

Just six words:

YOU FOUND THE MONEY. NOW RUN.

The church lights went out.

Charlotte froze.

Daniel stood.

Outside, tires screeched.

Several car doors slammed.

The caretaker whispered:

"They found you."

Charlotte grabbed the laptop.

Daniel reached for the evidence drive.

A voice echoed from outside.

"Charlotte Vale!"

She recognized it.

Vivian.

Then another voice.

Richard.

"Come outside, Charlotte."

Daniel looked at her.

"They followed the data."

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

"What?"

She looked at the laptop.

"The data led them here."

Daniel stared.

"What's the difference?"

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"We can use it."

She closed the laptop.

"They think we're trapped."

Daniel understood.

"You want to turn the trap around."

Charlotte nodded.

"Exactly."

She looked at the hidden exit.

Then at the evidence.

Then at the door.

Her mother had spent twenty-seven years preparing for this moment.

Charlotte had spent her entire life believing she was powerless.

Not anymore.

She whispered:

"Tonight they tried to silence me."

Daniel looked at her.

"And failed."

Charlotte smiled.

"Tomorrow, everyone is going to hear the truth."

Outside, the church doors exploded inward.

And the hunt began again.
