CHAPTER 9 — The Man Behind the Conspiracy

CHAPTER 9 — The Man Behind the Conspiracy

The church doors exploded inward.

Wood splintered across the stone floor.

Charlotte flinched.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"Back."

Three men entered through the smoke.

Behind them stood Vivian Ashford.

She was no longer wearing the elegant smile she used in public.

Her face was cold.

Controlled.

Almost emotionless.

"Charlotte," she called.

Charlotte stepped backward.

"Where is Richard?"

Vivian smiled.

"You're still asking the wrong question."

Daniel looked at her.

"Who sent you?"

Vivian's eyes moved toward him.

"You really don't know."

"Know what?"

"Who has been giving the orders."

Charlotte's stomach tightened.

Vivian looked directly at her.

"You're going to be disappointed."

She paused.

"Because you've been trusting him all along."

The lights suddenly came back on.

Charlotte turned.

The caretaker was gone.

The secret exit stood open.

Daniel pulled her toward it.

"Now."

They ran.

Behind them, Vivian shouted:

"Don't let them reach the street!"

Charlotte and Daniel disappeared into the tunnel.

They emerged behind the church.

A black car waited.

Daniel opened the door.

"Get in."

Charlotte jumped inside.

He drove.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Charlotte said:

"Vivian knew."

"About what?"

"The conspiracy."

Daniel shook his head.

"She's involved."

"Not in charge."

He glanced at her.

"Why?"

"Because she looked frightened."

"Vivian doesn't frighten easily."

"Exactly."

Charlotte looked at the city lights.

"She was afraid of someone."

Daniel's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"Who?"

Charlotte whispered:

"The person behind everything."

They reached Daniel's safe house before dawn.

Charlotte placed the laptop on the table.

The evidence drive sat beside it.

Daniel locked the door.

Then checked the windows.

"We have maybe an hour."

"Before what?"

"They find us again."

Charlotte looked at him.

"You sound certain."

"I've spent years dealing with people like Richard."

"Have you?"

Daniel looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

"You keep saying you understand them."

"I do."

"Then tell me who is controlling them."

Daniel said nothing.

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Vivian didn't act alone."

"No."

"Richard didn't either."

"No."

"The board is being controlled."

"Probably."

"And someone knew about my mother's secret office."

"Yes."

Charlotte looked directly into his eyes.

"Who?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"I don't know."

Charlotte stared.

Then smiled sadly.

"That's not true."

Daniel went still.

"You know."

"No."

"You just don't want to say."

"I swear—"

"Stop."

Charlotte lifted a hand.

"I've heard enough lies."

Daniel looked wounded.

"I haven't lied to you."

"You hid things."

"To protect you."

"That's what everyone says."

Silence.

Charlotte turned toward the laptop.

"Then let's stop asking questions."

She opened the folder.

"Let's look at the evidence."

The first file contained hundreds of transactions.

The second contained board communications.

The third contained photographs.

The fourth was encrypted.

Charlotte clicked it.

Password required.

Daniel watched.

"Do you know the password?"

"No."

Charlotte thought.

Her mother.

Her birthday.

Her father's name.

Nothing.

Then she remembered Eleanor's words.

"People fear numbers more than weapons."

She entered a number.

07241999.

The file opened.

Daniel stared.

"What is that?"

Charlotte whispered:

"My mother's wedding anniversary."

Inside were recordings.

Dozens.

Charlotte clicked the first.

Richard's voice.

"We need the board."

Another voice answered.

"I'll handle the lawyers."

Charlotte froze.

She recognized it.

Daniel noticed.

"Who?"

She shook her head.

"No."

The recording continued.

"Once Eleanor is gone, Charlotte can be isolated."

A third voice spoke.

"She won't know what she owns."

Charlotte stopped the recording.

Her hands were shaking.

"Play it."

Daniel looked at her.

"Charlotte—"

"Play it."

He did.

The third voice spoke again.

"If she becomes a problem, we'll make sure the public believes she is unstable."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

The voice was familiar.

Too familiar.

She had heard it at family dinners.

At charity events.

In her mother's office.

During her childhood.

A voice she had trusted.

A voice she had loved.

She whispered:

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"Who is it?"

Charlotte couldn't answer.

The recording continued.

"Vivian will create the scandal."

Richard replied:

"And Daniel?"

The third man laughed.

"Daniel will never know."

Charlotte stopped breathing.

Daniel's face went pale.

"Play it again."

She did.

The voice became unmistakable.

Daniel stepped backward.

"No."

Charlotte looked at him.

"You know him."

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then whispered:

"My uncle."

The room became silent.

Daniel's uncle.

Charles Cross.

The man who had raised Daniel after his father died.

The man who had helped Daniel enter the Solmere organization.

The man who had taught him everything about business.

The man Daniel had called "Uncle Charlie."

Charlotte remembered him.

He had always been kind to her.

At least she had thought so.

He used to bring her books.

He attended her mother's charity dinners.

He once told Charlotte:

"Your mother built something extraordinary. One day, you'll understand its value."

Charlotte felt sick.

"He knew."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"He knew everything."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Charlotte looked at the recording.

"Then find out."

They searched through the files.

Charles appeared everywhere.

Meetings.

Bank transfers.

Board communications.

Private dinners.

He wasn't simply involved.

He was coordinating.

Richard reported to him.

Vivian reported to him.

Several board members reported to him.

Even the shell companies ultimately connected back to one account.

The Cross Foundation.

Charlotte stared.

"The five hundred million."

Daniel nodded.

"My father's foundation."

"Your uncle controls it."

"Yes."

Charlotte whispered:

"So the money wasn't stolen."

"No."

"It was moved."

"To protect it."

"From whom?"

Daniel looked at the screen.

"Maybe from Richard."

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

She pointed to another document.

"Look at the dates."

The transfers had begun decades earlier.

Before Eleanor's death.

Before the fire.

Before Charlotte was born.

Daniel frowned.

"This started when my father was alive."

Charlotte nodded.

"Which means Charles didn't create the operation."

"Then who did?"

She opened another file.

A family tree appeared.

Vale.

Ashford.

Cross.

Three branches.

One trust.

One company.

One secret.

At the center was a name.

Edmund Vale.

Charlotte's grandfather.

Under his name:

ORIGINAL TRUST ADMINISTRATOR.

Then beneath it:

REMOVED FROM CONTROL — 1998.

Charlotte frowned.

"Why was he removed?"

Daniel opened another document.

A letter.

Edmund had written:

The company has been compromised.

Charlotte read further.

I no longer trust my own board.

Then:

Charles Cross has access to information he was never authorized to possess.

Daniel froze.

"Charles was involved from the beginning."

Charlotte nodded.

"But there's more."

She turned the page.

The final sentence read:

If I disappear, the trust must pass to Charlotte. No matter what happens.

Charlotte stared.

Her grandfather had known.

He had predicted everything.

A noise came from upstairs.

Both turned.

Someone was inside the house.

Daniel reached for a weapon.

Charlotte whispered:

"How did they find us?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know."

Footsteps approached.

Slowly.

Then stopped outside the room.

A knock.

Three times.

Charlotte froze.

A familiar voice came through the door.

"Daniel."

He went pale.

Charlotte recognized it.

Charles.

Daniel stared at her.

"Stay here."

"No."

"Charlotte—"

"I'm coming."

He opened the door.

Charles Cross stood in the hallway.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

Holding no weapon.

He looked at Daniel.

Then Charlotte.

His expression was almost sad.

"I was hoping you wouldn't find out this way."

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

"How long?"

Charles sighed.

"Longer than you could imagine."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You killed Eleanor."

Charles looked at him.

"No."

"Then who did?"

Charles smiled faintly.

"Eleanor wasn't killed because of Solmere."

Charlotte stared.

"Then why?"

"Because she discovered the truth."

"What truth?"

Charles looked directly at her.

"Your father didn't disappear."

Charlotte's breath caught.

"I know."

"No."

Charles shook his head.

"You know he survived."

He paused.

"You don't know what happened after."

Charlotte's voice trembled.

"What happened?"

Charles looked at Daniel.

"Ask him."

Daniel froze.

Charlotte turned.

"Daniel?"

Charles smiled.

"Ask your protector where he was the night Jonathan vanished."

Then he walked away.

Daniel didn't move.

Charlotte stared at him.

"What is he talking about?"

Daniel looked at her.

"I was there."

"Where?"

"Montreal."

"When?"

"The night your father disappeared."

Charlotte's heart dropped.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

"That's not an answer."

"I tried to save him."

"Did you?"

Daniel looked away.

Charlotte's eyes filled with anger.

"What happened?"

Daniel finally spoke.

"Jonathan trusted me."

"And?"

"I betrayed him."

Silence.

Charlotte stepped backward.

"What?"

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I gave Charles his location."

Charlotte stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because Charles told me your mother was in danger."

"And you believed him."

"Yes."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I was twenty-three."

Charlotte whispered:

"And my father?"

"Was taken."

"By Charles?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Is he alive?"

"I don't know."

Charlotte felt the room spinning.

She remembered Jonathan's warning.

Don't trust Daniel Cross.

Her father had known.

He had known Daniel had betrayed him.

Yet Daniel had spent months pretending to protect her.

Charlotte's voice became cold.

"You lied to me."

Daniel looked at her.

"I was trying to make it right."

"You can't."

"I know."

"How many years?"

"What?"

"How many years have you been working for Charles?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I stopped."

"When?"

"The day your mother died."

Charlotte stared.

"Why?"

"Because I found out Charles had planned the fire."

Daniel's voice broke.

"I realized what I'd done."

Charlotte said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"I spent the next twenty-seven years trying to undo it."

"By working at Solmere?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Charles trusted me."

Charlotte understood.

He hadn't been protecting the company.

He had been infiltrating it.

But that didn't erase what he had done.

"You should have told me."

"I was afraid you'd hate me."

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

"You were right."

Charles appeared at the end of the hallway.

"Enough."

Daniel turned.

"You."

Charles smiled.

"You've always been emotional, Daniel."

Charlotte stepped forward.

"You killed my mother."

Charles shook his head.

"No."

"You ordered the fire."

"I ordered the destruction of evidence."

"People died."

"I didn't intend for that."

"You're lying."

Charles looked at her.

"Your mother was going to expose everything."

"Everything?"

"Everything."

He pointed toward the laptop.

"The trust."

"The money."

"The politicians."

"The board."

"All of it."

Charlotte stared.

"Why?"

Charles smiled.

"Because Solmere was never supposed to belong to one family."

He paused.

"It belonged to all of us."

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

Charles's smile disappeared.

"Then prove it."

He pulled out a document.

"The original trust agreement."

Charlotte stared.

"The real one."

Charles held it up.

"And unlike your mother's version..."

He smiled.

"...this one contains a clause you haven't seen."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Don't."

Charles ignored him.

"If Charlotte claims the trust, she assumes every liability attached to it."

Charlotte's face changed.

"What liabilities?"

Charles looked at her.

"Everything Solmere has ever done."

He dropped the document.

"Every illegal transaction."

"Every bribe."

"Every hidden account."

"Every secret contract."

"And every crime committed in its name."

Charlotte stared at the paper.

Charles smiled.

"If you take control of Solmere..."

"You inherit the entire criminal empire."

Then he walked away.

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

"Is it true?"

Daniel picked up the document.

His face changed.

"Yes."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

The truth was worse than she imagined.

The company she had spent her entire life believing was her family's legacy was built on secrets.

And now the people behind those secrets had given her a choice.

Claim the empire—

and become responsible for its crimes.

Or walk away—

and let Charles Cross control everything.

Charlotte opened her eyes.

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"No what?"

She picked up the original trust.

"I'm not walking away."

Daniel stared.

"Charlotte..."

She looked toward the door where Charles had disappeared.

"If they built this empire on lies..."

Her voice became steady.

"...then I'll tear it down and rebuild it on the truth."

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, he smiled.

But neither of them noticed the small red light blinking on the laptop.

The recording was still active.

Someone had heard everything.

And that someone wasn't Charles.

It was Vivian.

She was sitting alone in a car across the street.

Listening through an encrypted device.

Her hands were shaking.

Because she had just heard the one thing Charles never wanted anyone to know.

Charles wasn't the mastermind.

He was only following orders.

Vivian whispered to herself:

"God help us."

Then she looked at the photograph beside her.

A photograph of a woman Charlotte had never suspected.

The woman who had been controlling the conspiracy from the beginning.

May you like

Charlotte's own aunt.

And Vivian knew the next move would be the bloodiest one yet.
