CHAPTER 10 — THE WOMAN WHO HAD PROOF

CHAPTER 10 — THE WOMAN WHO HAD PROOF
The boardroom remained dark.
Only the emergency screens illuminated the faces around the table.
PHASE TWO BEGINS AT MIDNIGHT.
11:48 p.m.
Twelve minutes.
Charlotte stared at her father.
“You said you killed the wrong man.”
Daniel didn't answer.
She stepped closer.
“What does that mean?”
His jaw tightened.
“It means the night of the fire wasn't what you were told.”
“Then tell me.”
Daniel looked at the board members.
“Not here.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“No more secrets.”
Victor laughed bitterly from across the room.
“Secrets are all your family has.”
Charlotte turned toward him.
“You're still talking?”
Victor smiled.
“You haven't figured out who the real enemy is.”
Daniel moved between them.
“Charlotte, we need to leave.”
“No.”
“Your grandfather is moving.”
“I know.”
“Then we have minutes.”
Charlotte looked at the clock.
11:49.
“Fine.”
She pointed toward Daniel.
“You're coming with me.”
Then she pointed at Victor.
“So are you.”
Victor stared.
“Why?”
“Because you know things my family refuses to tell me.”
Victor laughed.
“You're beginning to sound like your mother.”
Charlotte's expression hardened.
“Good.”
THE WOMAN IN THE RECORDS
They left through a service corridor.
Lucas followed.
The board members remained behind, guarded by Solmere security.
Charlotte walked quickly.
“Where are we going?”
Daniel answered:
“To the archive.”
“What archive?”
“The one your mother spent seven years protecting.”
Victor scoffed.
“It's gone.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You thought I didn't know about it?”
Victor's face tightened.
Charlotte noticed.
“You know where it is.”
“Yes.”
“Then take us there.”
Victor hesitated.
Charlotte stepped closer.
“If my mother is alive, I will find her.”
Victor stared at her.
Then sighed.
“Under the old east wing.”
They reached an unmarked steel door.
Victor entered a code.
The door opened.
Inside was a narrow room filled with shelves.
Thousands of files.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Medical documents.
Court transcripts.
Charlotte stopped.
“What is all this?”
Victor looked at her.
“Your family's history.”
She picked up a folder.
The label read:
VALE / PRIVATE — E.V.
Charlotte opened it.
Inside were photographs of her mother.
Hundreds of them.
Her mother meeting politicians.
Her mother visiting hospitals.
Her mother speaking to lawyers.
Then Charlotte found something unexpected.
A photograph of a young woman she didn't recognize.
The woman stood beside Evelyn.
Charlotte turned to Daniel.
“Who is she?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Maria.”
“Who?”
“Maria Bennett.”
Victor stared at the photograph.
Charlotte noticed.
“You know her.”
Victor said nothing.
“Who is Maria?”
Daniel answered quietly.
“She was your mother's closest friend.”
“Was?”
“She disappeared.”
“When?”
“The night of the fire.”
Charlotte looked at the photograph again.
“Why is she important?”
Victor finally spoke.
“Because she was the only person who had proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Victor looked toward the clock.
11:52.
“That the empire was stolen.”
MARIA BENNETT
Charlotte searched the files.
There were dozens of documents relating to Maria.
She had worked as a financial investigator for Solmere.
For twelve years.
She had discovered irregular transfers.
Hidden trusts.
Secret acquisitions.
Payments made to officials.
But one discovery stood out.
A transfer of $2.8 billion.
From the First Trust.
To a company called Northstar Meridian.
Charlotte frowned.
“Who owns this?”
Victor answered:
“Someone your grandfather trusted.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
Charlotte slammed the file shut.
“Enough.”
Victor looked at her.
“You want answers?”
“Yes.”
“Then understand this.”
He pointed to the file.
“Northstar Meridian wasn't a company.”
“What was it?”
“A vault.”
Charlotte frowned.
“A bank?”
“No.”
“A storage facility?”
“No.”
Victor's voice dropped.
“A legal identity.”
Charlotte stared.
“What does that mean?”
“It means assets could be placed there without appearing to belong to anyone.”
Charlotte understood.
“A shell.”
“Yes.”
“And who controlled it?”
Victor looked at Daniel.
“Your father.”
Charlotte turned.
“Dad?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I didn't control it.”
Victor laughed.
“You created it.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“To protect your mother.”
Charlotte stared at both men.
“My father created a billion-dollar shell company?”
Daniel nodded.
“Because Evelyn was trying to expose the empire.”
“Why would she need that?”
“Because she discovered your grandfather had been siphoning money from the First Trust.”
Charlotte looked at Victor.
“And you stole it later.”
Victor shook his head.
“Not all of it.”
Charlotte froze.
“What does that mean?”
Victor pointed toward the archive.
“Somebody took the money before I ever could.”
THE WOMAN WHO HAD PROOF
Charlotte turned another page.
A handwritten note was clipped to the document.
I know where the money went.
Below it:
M.B.
Maria Bennett.
Charlotte read the next line.
I know who ordered the fire.
Her heart stopped.
The final line:
And I know Charlotte's father did not betray Evelyn.
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
“Where did she get this?”
Daniel whispered:
“She sent it to me the night before she disappeared.”
“Then where is she?”
“We don't know.”
Victor shook his head.
“She died.”
Charlotte turned.
“You said she disappeared.”
“I changed my mind.”
“Which is it?”
Victor stared at the photograph.
“She was found in the river three days after the fire.”
Charlotte's face hardened.
“Was her body identified?”
Victor didn't answer.
Charlotte smiled coldly.
“That's what I thought.”
She grabbed the file.
“We find Maria.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She may be dead.”
“Then we find whoever knows what happened to her.”
Victor suddenly looked nervous.
Charlotte noticed.
“You know.”
“No.”
“You do.”
Victor backed away.
“Charlotte…”
“You know what happened to Maria.”
Victor remained silent.
Charlotte stepped closer.
“Tell me.”
Victor looked at the clock.
11:55.
“Not here.”
“Why?”
“Because someone is listening.”
THE HIDDEN CAMERA
Everyone froze.
Lucas looked around.
“Where?”
Victor pointed upward.
A tiny red light blinked inside the ventilation system.
Daniel reached for his weapon.
Too late.
The lights suddenly came back on.
Every screen displayed a live feed.
A woman appeared.
Older.
Gray hair.
Thin.
But alive.
Charlotte stared.
“Maria.”
The woman looked directly into the camera.
“Charlotte Vale.”
Charlotte stepped forward.
“Where are you?”
Maria smiled.
“Somewhere your family forgot existed.”
“Tell me.”
“Under Solmere.”
Charlotte's eyes widened.
“Are you alone?”
“No.”
“Who is with you?”
Maria looked away from the camera.
Then back.
“Your mother.”
Charlotte stopped breathing.
Evelyn appeared beside Maria.
She looked weak.
But alive.
Charlotte rushed toward the screen.
“Mom!”
Evelyn smiled.
“Charlotte.”
“I'm coming.”
“No.”
“I am.”
“You can't.”
“Why?”
Evelyn looked at Maria.
Maria answered:
“Because your grandfather knows you're here.”
Charlotte froze.
The screen flickered.
Then Edmund appeared.
He was standing behind them.
A gun in his hand.
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
“Grandfather.”
Edmund smiled.
“You always were impatient.”
THE SECOND FIRE
Edmund looked directly at Charlotte.
“You activated the First Trust.”
“Yes.”
“You transferred the empire.”
“Yes.”
“You think that makes you powerful.”
“No.”
Charlotte's voice was steady.
“It makes me responsible.”
Edmund laughed.
“You have no idea what you've inherited.”
“I know enough.”
“No.”
He pointed the gun toward Evelyn.
“You don't.”
Charlotte's heart stopped.
“Don't hurt her.”
Edmund smiled.
“Then come to me.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“I'll come.”
Edmund's expression hardened.
“No.”
“You want me.”
“I wanted you dead twenty-eight years ago.”
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
“What?”
Edmund continued:
“Your father was the architect of the original betrayal.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That's a lie.”
“Ask him about the fire.”
Charlotte turned.
“Dad?”
Daniel's eyes filled with pain.
“I didn't start the fire to kill them.”
“Then why?”
“To destroy the records.”
Charlotte stared.
“What records?”
“The ones proving your grandfather wasn't the rightful owner.”
Victor suddenly shouted:
“That's impossible.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Your problem, Victor, is that you never found the original ledger.”
Victor's face changed.
“Where is it?”
Daniel smiled.
“With Maria.”
The screen went black.
Victor stared.
Then everything happened at once.
An alarm sounded.
The archive doors locked.
The ventilation system released smoke.
Charlotte coughed.
“Gas!”
Daniel grabbed her.
“Down!”
Lucas smashed a ventilation grate.
Fresh air rushed through.
Victor ran toward the door.
It wouldn't open.
“Open it!”
Charlotte looked at him.
“You said you knew everything.”
Victor pounded the door.
“Help me!”
Charlotte ignored him.
“Lucas, find another exit.”
Lucas nodded.
They moved through the archive.
Behind them, smoke thickened.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
Edmund.
“You have five minutes.”
Charlotte looked up.
“For what?”
“The Solmere east wing will burn.”
Daniel froze.
Charlotte realized what he meant.
“There's another fire.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Edmund laughed.
“Everywhere.”
THE WOMAN IN THE BASEMENT
They escaped through a maintenance tunnel.
The fire alarms screamed above them.
Smoke poured through the upper vents.
Charlotte ran.
“Where is my mother?”
Daniel answered:
“Lower level.”
“How far?”
“Two floors.”
They reached a steel staircase.
At the bottom was a door.
Charlotte tried the handle.
Locked.
Victor caught up behind them.
“Move.”
He entered a code.
Nothing.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Charlotte looked at him.
“What's wrong?”
“The system has changed.”
“Because I'm the heir?”
“Yes.”
Charlotte placed her hand against the scanner.
The door opened.
Victor stared.
She smiled.
“That's getting old.”
They entered.
A woman stood at the end of the corridor.
Maria.
She held a black case.
Charlotte ran toward her.
“Where is my mother?”
Maria pointed.
“Inside.”
Charlotte opened the door.
Evelyn was lying on a medical bed.
Charlotte rushed to her.
“Mom.”
Evelyn opened her eyes.
“My little girl.”
Charlotte hugged her carefully.
“I thought you died.”
“I almost did.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I knew they would use you against me.”
Charlotte cried.
Maria closed the door behind them.
“There isn't much time.”
Charlotte turned.
“What is in the case?”
Maria placed it on the table.
“The proof.”
She opened it.
Inside was an original ledger.
Old.
Handwritten.
Stamped with the Vale family seal.
Charlotte opened it.
Names.
Payments.
Transfers.
Then she saw something that made her blood freeze.
One entry.
AUTHORIZED BY: DANIEL VALE
Charlotte looked at her father.
“You signed this.”
Daniel stared at the ledger.
“I never saw that.”
Maria shook her head.
“Because it was forged.”
Victor stepped into the room.
“Forged?”
Maria looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You're lying.”
Maria smiled.
“No.”
She pulled out another document.
“This is the original.”
Victor took it.
His face changed.
Charlotte looked at the signature.
It wasn't Daniel's.
It belonged to someone else.
Someone she knew.
Someone who had been sitting in the boardroom.
Someone who had voted against her.
Charlotte whispered the name.
“Adrian.”
THE MAN BEHIND THE AMBUSH
Maria nodded.
“Adrian signed the transfer.”
Victor stared at the document.
“He couldn't have.”
“He did.”
“But he was working for me.”
“No.”
Maria looked at him.
“He was working for himself.”
Charlotte understood.
The boardroom ambush hadn't been Victor's final move.
It had been Adrian's.
The fake medical records.
The emergency transfer.
The armed security.
The attempt to seize the First Trust.
All of it.
Adrian had used Victor.
And Victor hadn't even realized it.
Charlotte looked at Victor.
“You were never the mastermind.”
Victor's face went pale.
“No.”
Maria closed the case.
“Adrian has been preparing for this for years.”
“Where is he?”
Maria looked toward the ceiling.
“At the boardroom.”
Charlotte frowned.
“The boardroom?”
Maria nodded.
“He wants the board to believe Charlotte is dead.”
Evelyn suddenly sat upright.
“What?”
Maria looked at her.
“He activated the fire protocol.”
Evelyn's face went white.
“No.”
Charlotte turned.
“What is it?”
Her mother grabbed her hand.
“The emergency destruction sequence.”
“What does it destroy?”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Everything.”
“The records?”
“Yes.”
“The network?”
“Yes.”
“The hotel?”
Evelyn whispered:
“The entire Solmere complex.”
Charlotte stared.
“How long?”
Maria checked her watch.
11:59.
“One minute.”
MIDNIGHT
The entire building began shaking.
Sirens screamed.
Steel shutters descended.
Lights flashed.
A voice announced:
EMERGENCY PROTOCOL S-00.
DESTRUCTION SEQUENCE INITIATED.
Charlotte looked at her mother.
“Can we stop it?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Only the controlling heir can.”
Charlotte ran toward the terminal.
The screen displayed:
AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
She placed her hand against it.
HEIR CONFIRMED.
Then:
CHOOSE: PRESERVE OR DESTROY.
Charlotte froze.
Victor stared at her.
“Destroy it.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Maria said nothing.
Lucas whispered:
“Charlotte.”
Evelyn looked directly into her daughter's eyes.
“Don't choose based on what they want.”
Charlotte stared at the two options.
The empire had destroyed families.
Destroyed lives.
Destroyed her childhood.
Destroyed her mother.
But it had also provided hospitals.
Shelters.
Protection.
Employment.
Millions depended on Solmere.
If she destroyed everything, innocent people would suffer.
If she preserved it, the same machine could be rebuilt.
Charlotte closed her eyes.
Then she noticed something.
A third option.
Hidden beneath the others.
RESTRUCTURE.
She selected it.
The system paused.
Then:
CONFIRM?
Charlotte pressed YES.
The building stopped shaking.
The alarms went silent.
Everyone froze.
Then the screens changed.
SOLMERE EMPIRE — OWNERSHIP DISSOLVED.
ASSET CONTROL — TRANSFERRED TO INDEPENDENT TRUST.
PRIVATE FAMILY CONTROL — TERMINATED.
Victor stared.
“What did you do?”
Charlotte turned.
“I ended the empire.”
Maria smiled.
“No.”
She looked at Charlotte.
“You changed it.”
THE WOMAN WHO HAD PROOF
Maria handed Charlotte the black case.
“This is yours.”
Charlotte looked inside.
The original ledger.
The forged documents.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Witness statements.
And one final envelope.
Charlotte opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Her mother.
Her father.
And a newborn Charlotte.
On the back were three words.
Family before empire.
Charlotte looked at Evelyn.
Her mother was crying.
Daniel stood beside them.
Lucas lowered his head.
For the first time in years, Charlotte felt something she had almost forgotten.
Home.
Then Maria's expression changed.
“Charlotte.”
“What?”
“There is one more document.”
She pulled out a final sheet.
Charlotte read it.
Her face went pale.
ADRIAN VALE — CONTROLLING BENEFICIARY
“What is this?”
Maria answered:
“The person who stole the empire never wanted the empire.”
Charlotte looked at her.
“Then what did he want?”
Maria's voice dropped.
“He wanted access to the Vale bloodline.”
“Why?”
Maria hesitated.
“Because Adrian isn't a Vale.”
Charlotte froze.
“What?”
“He was adopted.”
Charlotte looked toward Evelyn.
Her mother's face had gone white.
Maria continued:
“His real identity was erased thirty years ago.”
Charlotte whispered:
“Who is he?”
Maria looked at her.
“That's the last secret your mother never told you.”
Suddenly, the lights went out.
A gunshot echoed somewhere above them.
Then another.
Charlotte grabbed her mother's hand.
A final message appeared on the emergency screen.
ADRIAN HAS ENTERED S-00.
And beneath it:
HE IS NOT ALONE.
Charlotte looked toward the locked door.
Footsteps approached.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Then someone whispered from the other side:
“Charlotte…”
She recognized the voice.
May you like
Adrian.
The door handle began turning.
