CHAPTER 6 — THE SAFE BEHIND THE WALL

CHAPTER 6 — THE SAFE BEHIND THE WALL

For several seconds, Charlotte couldn't breathe.

The photograph remained on the desk between them.

Her mother.

Alive.

Bound to a chair.

Victor standing behind her.

The image was dated yesterday.

Not seven years ago.

Not months ago.

Yesterday.

Charlotte's fingers curled into fists.

“You have her.”

Victor didn't deny it.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“On whether you intend to behave like your mother.”

Charlotte stared at him.

“My mother?”

“Your mother refused to cooperate.”

“What did you ask her to do?”

Victor smiled.

“Something very simple.”

“What?”

“Tell me where she hid the original Vale inheritance.”

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

“The inheritance belongs to me.”

Victor laughed softly.

“No.”

He tapped the photograph.

“It belonged to your mother.”

Then he tapped the file.

“And before her, it belonged to your grandfather.”

Finally, he looked at Charlotte.

“But none of them ever understood what they actually inherited.”

Charlotte stepped closer.

“You keep talking about some inheritance as if it isn't money.”

“It isn't.”

“Then what is it?”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“The first Vale.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Lucas finally spoke.

“It means the empire wasn't built by your grandfather.”

Charlotte turned toward him.

“Then who built it?”

Lucas looked at Victor.

“His father.”

Victor nodded.

“And before him?”

“His father.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“That still doesn't explain anything.”

Victor walked toward the wall behind his desk.

He placed his hand against a section of dark wood.

“There are secrets in the Vale family that predate the company by more than a century.”

He pressed something hidden beneath the panel.

A click sounded.

A narrow section of the wall opened.

Behind it was a steel door.

Charlotte stared.

Victor turned to her.

“Your mother spent twenty years trying to find this.”

Charlotte looked at the safe.

“And you found it.”

“No.”

Victor smiled.

“Your mother did.”

THE SAFE BEHIND THE WALL

Victor entered a code.

The steel door remained locked.

He entered another.

Nothing.

Then he looked at Charlotte.

“Your turn.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What?”

“The safe requires a Vale blood signature.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“Victor.”

“Don't.”

Victor's voice became cold.

“You know what happens if she doesn't open it.”

Lucas stopped.

Charlotte looked between them.

“What happens?”

Victor didn't answer.

Instead, he pulled a small device from his pocket.

He placed it on the desk.

A video appeared.

Charlotte's mother.

Evelyn.

She was sitting in a dark room.

Her face was bruised.

Her hair was disheveled.

But she was conscious.

Charlotte's heart broke.

“Mom…”

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“Charlotte.”

Charlotte stepped toward the screen.

“Mom, I'm here.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“Don't come for me.”

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

“I will.”

“You mustn't.”

“I'm coming.”

“Charlotte, listen to me.”

Her mother's voice became desperate.

“The safe must never be opened.”

Charlotte froze.

Victor smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Evelyn continued.

“If they open it, everything changes.”

Charlotte stared at the screen.

“What changes?”

Her mother looked frightened.

Not of Victor.

Of what was inside the safe.

“Your entire life.”

The recording ended.

Silence filled the office.

Charlotte turned slowly toward Victor.

“You're afraid of what's inside.”

Victor smiled.

“Everyone is.”

THE CODE

Charlotte approached the safe.

There was no keypad.

Only a small glass panel.

She placed her hand against it.

Nothing happened.

Victor watched.

“Try again.”

Charlotte pressed harder.

A red light appeared.

IDENTITY NOT RECOGNIZED.

Charlotte frowned.

“But I'm a Vale.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“Your mother changed the system.”

“What?”

“She knew Adrian would try to use your DNA.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Then how do I open it?”

Lucas stared at the safe.

“Your mother's code.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“I don't know it.”

“You do.”

“No.”

“You've known it since childhood.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Lucas smiled sadly.

“Your mother's favorite song.”

Charlotte froze.

A memory surfaced.

She was six years old.

Sitting at the piano.

Her mother behind her.

Teaching her a melody.

Charlotte had asked:

“Why do you always play this song?”

Her mother had smiled.

“Because my mother played it for me.”

Charlotte whispered:

“Moonlight.”

Lucas nodded.

“The song.”

Charlotte turned toward the safe.

There was a tiny keyboard beneath the scanner.

She entered the first notes.

Nothing.

She tried again.

The mechanism clicked.

Victor's face changed.

The safe unlocked.

Charlotte looked at him.

For the first time, the powerful lawyer looked afraid.

WHAT WAS INSIDE

The steel door opened slowly.

Inside were only four objects.

A black leather box.

A sealed envelope.

A small silver key.

And a handwritten journal.

Charlotte reached for the journal.

Victor stopped her.

“Don't.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because once you read it, there is no going back.”

Charlotte pulled the journal free.

“I'm already past that point.”

She opened it.

The handwriting belonged to her grandfather.

The first page contained a date.

January 3, 1948.

Charlotte began reading.

I built the first hotel because I needed a place where money could move without questions.

Her eyes widened.

The next line was worse.

The hotel was never intended to be a hotel.

Charlotte looked at Lucas.

He said nothing.

She continued.

The original Solmere had been designed as a private network.

Not simply for hospitality.

For banking.

For transportation.

For information.

For moving people and assets without government oversight.

Charlotte turned the page.

Names filled the next several pages.

Politicians.

Judges.

Bankers.

Businessmen.

International financiers.

People who had shaped the city for decades.

People whose descendants still controlled powerful institutions.

“This can't be real.”

Victor answered quietly:

“It is.”

Charlotte turned another page.

A map was drawn across two pages.

It showed the world.

Red lines connected cities.

London.

New York.

Geneva.

Singapore.

Dubai.

Hong Kong.

Buenos Aires.

The Solmere properties were marked in black.

Charlotte stared.

“These weren't hotels.”

“No.”

“They were safe houses.”

“Yes.”

“For whom?”

Victor looked at her.

“People who needed to disappear.”

THE NAMES

Charlotte turned the page.

There were lists.

People who had entered the Solmere network.

People who had left.

People who had never been seen again.

Then she saw one name.

Thomas Mercer.

She froze.

Vivienne's father.

Beside his name:

STATUS — PROTECTED

Charlotte looked at Lucas.

“Your father was part of this.”

Lucas shook his head.

“Not voluntarily.”

She turned another page.

EVELYN VALE — PROTECTOR

Charlotte's heart tightened.

Her mother had known.

Not only about the network.

She had inherited it.

And apparently, she had spent years trying to destroy it from inside.

Then Charlotte saw another name.

CHARLOTTE VALE — SUCCESSOR

She stopped breathing.

Underneath it was a date.

Her date of birth.

And one sentence:

If she survives, she becomes the final controlling heir.

Charlotte stared at the words.

“Survives?”

Victor said nothing.

She looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Still nothing.

Charlotte slammed the journal onto the desk.

“What does that mean?”

Lucas finally answered.

“Your grandfather knew someone would try to kill you.”

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

Charlotte stared.

“How?”

Lucas looked at the journal.

“Because he started the same thing that Adrian later continued.”

“What?”

“Testing the family.”

THE SECOND LEDGER

Charlotte opened the black leather box.

Inside was another ledger.

This one was much older.

Its pages were yellowed.

The first page contained a family tree.

But there was something wrong.

Charlotte traced the names.

Her grandfather.

His father.

His father.

Then another branch.

A branch that did not lead to Charlotte's mother.

It led to Lucas.

Charlotte looked at him.

“You were always the heir.”

Lucas nodded.

“Under the original trust.”

“Then why did my mother change it?”

“Because she discovered something.”

“What?”

Lucas looked at Victor.

Victor said nothing.

Charlotte's voice became colder.

“Tell me.”

Lucas took a breath.

“She discovered that our grandfather had falsified the bloodline.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What?”

“Your grandfather wasn't the true Vale heir.”

Charlotte stared.

“That makes no sense.”

“It does.”

Lucas pointed at the family tree.

“This branch was created.”

Charlotte looked closer.

A name had been erased.

Underneath it was another surname.

MERCER.

Charlotte's eyes widened.

“Mercer?”

“Thomas.”

“Your father?”

Lucas nodded.

Charlotte stared at the family tree.

“My father?”

“No.”

Lucas looked at her.

“Your grandfather's real heir was Thomas Mercer.”

Charlotte's mind went blank.

“Then my family…”

“Was built on a lie.”

THE MAN WHO STOLE A NAME

Victor finally spoke.

“Your great-grandfather adopted Thomas's grandmother.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because she was the last surviving member of the original bloodline.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“You're saying the Vale family stole its name?”

“Yes.”

“And my grandfather knew?”

“Yes.”

“And my mother knew?”

“Yes.”

“And Lucas?”

“Yes.”

Charlotte looked at Lucas.

“Then why did you never tell me?”

“Because I didn't know until three years ago.”

“Who told you?”

“My father.”

“Thomas.”

Lucas nodded.

“He found the original records.”

Charlotte stared.

“Where?”

“In the safe.”

She looked at the open compartment.

“Then why did he disappear?”

“Because Victor found out.”

Charlotte turned toward the lawyer.

“You knew.”

Victor's expression was unreadable.

“I knew enough.”

“You tried to kill him.”

“No.”

“You paid someone to make him disappear.”

Victor's voice remained calm.

“I protected the empire.”

Charlotte's face hardened.

“You murdered my family.”

Victor shook his head.

“Your family murdered itself.”

THE LAST LETTER

Charlotte noticed the sealed envelope.

Her name was written on it.

Not her full name.

Just:

Charlotte.

She picked it up.

The seal carried her mother's initials.

E.V.

She opened it.

A single sheet of paper.

My dearest Charlotte,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

There is something I never told you.

The Solmere Empire was never supposed to belong to you.

It was supposed to disappear.

I tried to destroy it.

Your grandfather tried to preserve it.

Adrian tried to steal it.

Victor tried to control it.

Lucas tried to expose it.

And now you must decide what to do with it.

But before you make that decision, find the woman beneath Solmere.

She knows the truth about your birth.

She knows why I changed the inheritance.

And she knows why I had to let everyone believe you were dead.

Trust no one.

Not even me.

Charlotte lowered the letter.

Her hands were shaking.

“Woman beneath Solmere?”

Lucas nodded.

“Your mother.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Then why did you bring me here?”

Lucas looked away.

“Because I thought the safe would contain the location.”

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

“But it doesn't.”

“No.”

“Then what does?”

Lucas looked toward the small silver key.

“That.”

Charlotte picked it up.

There was an inscription.

S-00

She frowned.

“What is that?”

Victor's face changed.

Charlotte noticed.

“You know.”

Victor stepped backward.

“No.”

“You do.”

“I don't.”

Charlotte held up the key.

“What is S-00?”

Victor's silence was answer enough.

Charlotte stepped toward him.

“What is it?”

Victor looked at her.

“The first Solmere.”

Charlotte frowned.

“The original hotel?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Victor whispered:

“The facility beneath it.”

THE TRUTH BENEATH THE HOTEL

A loud explosion shook the building.

The windows rattled.

The lights flickered.

Charlotte grabbed the desk.

“What was that?”

Thomas's voice came through the communication device.

“Victor.”

Victor looked toward the door.

“Adrian.”

Thomas continued:

“He's here.”

Victor's face went pale.

“How many?”

“Enough to take the building.”

Charlotte looked at Lucas.

“Where is my mother?”

Lucas answered:

“Below us.”

“How far?”

“Four levels.”

“Then let's go.”

Victor shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

Charlotte turned.

“What?”

“The lower levels aren't controlled by Solmere.”

“Then who controls them?”

Victor looked at the safe.

“The original Vale organization.”

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

“You mean the network.”

“Yes.”

“Who runs it now?”

Victor didn't answer.

A second explosion shook the building.

Then every light in the office went out.

Emergency lights came on.

Red.

Slow.

Pulsing.

Charlotte heard footsteps in the hallway.

Dozens.

Lucas reached for her.

“Stay behind me.”

Charlotte pulled away.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“You'll be safer.”

“I've spent my entire life being protected by people who lied to me.”

She picked up the silver key.

“I'm done.”

The office doors burst open.

Men in tactical clothing flooded inside.

Adrian walked behind them.

He was calm.

Almost amused.

Charlotte stared at him.

“You.”

Adrian smiled.

“You finally found the safe.”

Victor stepped forward.

“You shouldn't have come.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You should have destroyed it when you had the chance.”

Victor's face hardened.

“You were never supposed to know.”

Adrian laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He looked at Charlotte.

“The safe was never the prize.”

Charlotte tightened her grip around the key.

“Then what is?”

Adrian smiled.

“You.”

Silence.

Charlotte's heart pounded.

Adrian took one step forward.

“Everything inside that safe was designed to lead you here.”

“To where?”

Adrian pointed toward the floor.

“Below.”

Charlotte looked down.

A faint vibration ran through the building.

Then she heard something.

A woman's voice.

Distant.

Muffled.

Calling her name.

“Charlotte…”

Her eyes widened.

“Mom?”

Adrian's smile disappeared.

Lucas turned pale.

Victor stepped backward.

The voice came again.

“Charlotte…”

Then a scream.

Charlotte ran toward the hidden passage.

Lucas grabbed her arm.

“Wait!”

She pulled free.

“She's down there!”

“That's what they want.”

Charlotte turned.

“Who?”

Lucas looked at Adrian.

Adrian smiled.

And then the building's emergency alarm began screaming.

A digital message appeared on every screen in the office:

S-00 SECURITY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

Then another line appeared.

GENETIC HEIR CONFIRMED.

Charlotte stared.

The system had identified her.

A final message appeared.

WELCOME BACK, SUBJECT A.

Everyone in the room went silent.

Even Adrian looked afraid.

Charlotte slowly turned toward Victor.

“What is Subject A?”

Victor didn't answer.

Then a hidden speaker crackled overhead.

Her mother's voice came through.

Weak.

Terrified.

But unmistakable.

“Charlotte…”

She swallowed.

“Mom?”

A pause.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Run.”

The speaker went dead.

The floor beneath them suddenly opened.

Charlotte fell.

Lucas reached for her.

Thomas shouted.

Victor screamed something she couldn't hear.

And Adrian simply watched.

Charlotte plunged into darkness.

As she fell, she heard one final voice.

Not her mother's.

Not Lucas's.

Not Victor's.

May you like

A man's voice whispered from somewhere beneath the hotel:

“Welcome to the real Solmere.”
