Chapter 2: The Thing He Was Never Supposed to Feel
Three days passed.
Emma started learning the rules of her new life.
Not spoken rules.
Observed ones.
The staff no longer spoke freely around her. They spoke around him through her. Doors opened before she reached them. Meals appeared without request. Her mother’s doctors now answered calls before Emma even placed them.
And Dante…
Dante stopped being absent.
He didn’t enter her space often.
But he was always near it.
Sometimes she would find him in the hallway at night, standing as if he had been there long before she arrived.
Sometimes she would catch him watching her from across rooms he didn’t need to be in.
And always—always—he looked like a man trying not to become something worse than what he already was.
One night, Emma snapped.
“You can’t just control every part of my life.”
Dante didn’t react.
“You’re not in a position to negotiate.”
“I’m not negotiating. I’m telling you I’m not a prisoner.”
A long silence.
Then Dante said quietly, “You still think this is about control.”
“What else would it be?”
That question landed differently than she expected.
He stepped closer, just enough that she had to tilt her head up to meet his eyes.
“If it was control,” he said, “you wouldn’t still have your own name.”
Emma froze.
“That’s not comfort,” she whispered.
“No,” Dante said. “It’s honesty.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Emma noticed something unsettling.
He wasn’t standing like a man guarding her anymore.
He was standing like a man trying not to reach for her.
That realization made her take a step back.
“You don’t even know me,” she said.
Dante’s voice dropped.
“I know you never stopped saying your name when you thought no one was listening.”
Emma stopped breathing.
“I know you talk to yourself when you’re tired,” he continued. “I know you apologize to objects you bump into. I know you haven’t bought anything for yourself in over a year that wasn’t necessary for survival.”
His jaw tightened.
“And I know I shouldn’t care about any of that.”
Silence cracked between them.
Emma’s voice came out smaller than she intended.
“Then don’t.”
Dante looked away first.

For the first time, he didn’t look like a man in control of a city.
He looked like a man losing a war he never declared.
