Chapter 3: The Moment the King Lost His Grip

Chapter 3: The Moment the King Lost His Grip

The attack happened on a Thursday.

Not dramatic.

Not loud.

Clean.

Professional.

The kind Dante was used to ordering—not receiving.

Emma never saw the bullet.

She only heard the glass explode beside her in the hallway.

Then Dante was there.

Instant.

Between her and the threat.

The world turned into motion, shouting, security alarms, footsteps.

And then silence again.

When it was over, Emma was pushed into a safe room she had never seen before.

Dante arrived minutes later.

Blood on his sleeve.

Not his.

Someone else’s.

Emma stood up immediately. “What is going on?”

Dante didn’t answer right away.

His eyes scanned her first.

Checking.

Confirming.

Then he exhaled like something inside him had been holding its breath for years.

“They found you,” he said.

“I didn’t ask for this.”

“I know.”

“Then why am I still here?”

That question hit harder than the gunfire.

Dante stepped closer.

For the first time, there was no distance left between them that felt intentional.

“Because if they get to you,” he said quietly, “they get to me.”

Emma shook her head. “I’m not yours.”

A pause.

Dante’s expression didn’t change.

But something inside it finally broke its discipline.

“I know,” he said again.

Then softer:

“That’s the problem.”

Emma’s voice trembled. “You’re not supposed to say things like that.”

“I stopped being what I’m supposed to be the moment I started watching you.”

The room felt smaller.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Emma whispered, “What are you asking for?”

Dante didn’t answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, it wasn’t an order.

It wasn’t a deal.

It was the first thing he had said that sounded like surrender.

“I don’t know,” he admitted.

And that terrified both of them more than any enemy ever could.

Because Dante Marchetti could control cities.

But he could not control the one thing he had finally felt.

Not power.

Not fear.

Something far more dangerous.

Attachment.

Emma looked at him for a long time.

Then she said quietly:

“You don’t get to save someone and then decide they belong to you.”

Dante’s gaze held hers.

“I know.”

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“But I don’t know how to stop.”
