Chapter 3: The Truth She Could Not Bury

Chapter 3: The Truth She Could Not Bury
The silence between them was worse than grief.
Because grief ends.
Truth does not.
Elena stepped backward slowly.
“I didn’t want you to find me,” she said.
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“You let me bury you.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I had no choice.”
Lila stood between them, confused.
Elena knelt beside her.
“She saved me,” Elena said softly. “When I escaped, I was injured. I had no memory of who I was for months.”
Adrian listened, frozen.
“I was going to come back,” she continued. “But I learned something.”
Her voice dropped.
“There are people who wanted me dead. People close to you. If I returned, they would have finished it.”
Adrian’s fists clenched.
“So you chose death instead of me?”
Elena flinched.
“I chose survival.”
A long pause.
The river moved quietly behind them.
Then Adrian looked at Lila.
At her torn clothes.
Her bravery.
Her silence.
“She’s yours?” he asked softly.
Elena hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
The word shattered him more than the funeral ever did.
For two years, he had mourned a grave.
But the truth was worse.
He had been robbed of a family.
Not by death.
By fear.
Elena stepped forward, trembling.
“I didn’t come back because I was afraid you would hate me.”
Adrian looked at her for a long time.
Then at Lila.
Then back at Elena.
His voice finally broke.
“I didn’t stop loving you because you died.”
A pause.
“I stopped living because I believed you were gone.”
Lila reached for his hand first.
Small.
Warm.
Real.
Then Elena did too.
And for the first time in two years, Adrian Vale was not standing in front of a grave.
He was standing in front of a choice.
Between the past he buried.
And the family that had just refused to stay dead.

“Some people are not lost to death. They are lost to the lies that separate them from the truth.”
