Daniel looked from his terrified son to Evelyn.
Finally, he nodded.
"Do it."
Marissa stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous! The orthopedic surgeon already treated him."
Evelyn remained calm.
"If I'm wrong, we'll simply replace the cast."
She carefully switched on the cast cutter. The familiar vibration filled the room.
Noah squeezed his father's hand.
"It's still moving..."
Within minutes, the cast split open.
The room became deathly quiet.
Something small and dark crawled out from between the padding.
A live cockroach.
One nurse gasped.
Then another.
But Evelyn didn't stop there.
She gently peeled back more of the lining.
Hidden deep inside were several dead insects, tiny food crumbs, and damp padding that had begun to grow mold.
"This didn't happen by accident," Evelyn said quietly.
"The cast was deliberately contaminated after it was applied."
Noah burst into tears.
"I told you..."
Daniel stared in disbelief.
Marissa took a step backward.
"I—I don't know how that got there."
But security cameras at the hospital had shown the cast was clean when Noah was discharged.
Someone had tampered with it afterward.
