PART 1: THE SILENCE AFTER THE NAME

PART 1: THE SILENCE AFTER THE NAME
For a moment, no one in the Seabourne Club moved.
Not the investors with their gold cufflinks.
Not the celebrities who had flown in on private jets.
Not even the photographers adjusting their lenses for the perfect wedding shot.
Because the name “Eleanor Vail” didn’t belong in the present.
It belonged in archives.
In museum glass cases.
In fashion history textbooks that professors warned students not to question.
Vivian Shaw’s fingers tightened around her champagne flute.
“That’s impossible,” she said sharply. “Eleanor Vail doesn’t appear in public anymore.”
Eleanor didn’t look at her.
She kept her hand resting lightly on Hannah’s shoulder.
As if she had all the time in the world.
“As you can see,” Eleanor said calmly, “I appear when necessary.”
A few guests laughed nervously, unsure whether they were witnessing a performance or a disaster.
Everett stepped forward.
His voice was low. Controlled.
“Ma’am, if this is some kind of—”
Eleanor finally turned her eyes to him.
And Everett stopped speaking.
Because something about her gaze didn’t ask for permission.
It evaluated truth.
“I know who you are,” she said softly. “But I’m not here for you.”
May you like
Then she looked at Vivian again.
“I’m here for what you said about my work.”
