PART 2: THE DRESS THAT HAD A STORY

PART 2: THE DRESS THAT HAD A STORY

Hannah felt her hands tremble under the weight of everyone staring at her.

She had never wanted attention.

Not like this.

Not like a trial.

Eleanor gently stepped back and looked at the dress from head to toe.

Slowly.

Like she was remembering something only she could see.

Then she spoke.

“This fabric was woven in Como,” she said. “Hand-finished. Not machine-pressed.”

She touched the sleeve.

“These stitches were done using a method I taught only once in my life.”

A quiet murmur spread through the ballroom.

Eleanor continued.

“The pearls were not decorative. They were chosen to balance the weight of the silk so it would fall correctly when she walks.”

She turned slightly toward the guests.

“And the person who wore this dress was never meant to be seen as decoration.”

Her eyes returned to Vivian.

“She was meant to be seen as the design itself.”

The word landed harder than any insult Vivian had thrown earlier.

Everett’s jaw tightened.

“You made that?” he asked quietly, looking at Hannah now.

Hannah hesitated.

“I… didn’t know I was supposed to matter that much.”

Something flickered in Everett’s expression.

May you like

Not pity.

Understanding.
