Then, slowly... Vanessa stepped toward him.
And the boy flinched.
Not because she raised her voice.
Not because she looked angry.
Because he expected pain.
The movement was so instinctive that it broke something inside the restaurant.
Several customers looked away.
Others suddenly felt ashamed of the assumptions they had made when he first walked in.
Vanessa stopped.
Her throat tightened.
"What's your name?" she asked softly.
The boy hesitated.
"Jay."
"How old are you?"
"Twelve."
The same age as Ethan.
The realization hit her hard.
One boy wore a tailored blazer.
The other wore clothes that barely kept him warm.
