Chapter 2: The Story Nobody Asked

Vanessa invited Jay to sit at their table.

At first he refused.

Then Ethan pulled out a chair beside him.

"Please."

Slowly, Jay sat down.

The restaurant remained unusually quiet.

Even people at distant tables listened.

For the first time in a long time, someone asked Jay about himself.

Not where he came from.

Not why he looked homeless.

Just... himself.

The answers came slowly.

His mother had died two years earlier.

His father had disappeared long before that.

Since then, he had drifted between shelters, abandoned buildings, and temporary programs that never lasted.

Most people looked through him.

Some looked down on him.

Very few looked at him.

When Vanessa asked why he had risked his life to save Ethan, Jay shrugged.

The answer was simple.

"I didn't think about it."

Ethan stared at him.

"You could've been hit."

Jay smiled weakly.

"So could you."

The room fell silent again.

Not because the answer was dramatic.

Because it wasn't.
