Chapter 1 – The First Word Nobody Expected

Chapter 1 – The First Word Nobody Expected

No one expected the child to run.

Especially not in the middle of a carefully staged engagement party.

Crystal glasses clinked softly under golden chandeliers. Laughter floated through the grand hall of the Whitmore Estate, polished and rehearsed like everything else that night.

And then—

a small figure broke through the symmetry.

The little girl.

Seven years old.

Silent her entire life.

She ran straight past the guests.

Past the security.

Past her own father standing beside his fiancée.

Straight into the kitchen corridor where the housemaid stood holding a tray.

“Mira!” someone called. “Catch her—”

But it was too late.

The child stopped in front of the maid.

Looked up.

Her lips trembled.

Years of silence gathered in that single breath.

Then—

softly.

Clearly.

“Ma…ma.”

The tray slipped from the maid’s hands.

Glass shattered across the floor.

The entire ballroom behind them went silent without understanding why.

Because no one had ever heard her speak.

Not once.

May you like

Not ever.

And yet she had just said the word that did not belong in this house.
