CHAPTER 2: WHAT TIME NEVER ERASED

The executive slowly reached into his suit pocket.

His hands were unsteady as he pulled out a small, faded photograph. The edges were worn, folded too many times.

He held it up.

A younger version of her.

Smiling.

Holding a child’s hand.

“That day at the station,” he said, voice breaking, “you told me to wait. You said you’d come back in ten minutes.”

He swallowed hard.

“But you never did.”

The woman stared at the photo.

Her breath caught.

Her knees weakened slightly, and she would’ve fallen if he hadn’t been holding her hand already.

“I waited,” he continued, tears spilling freely now. “I waited days… weeks… years.”

A coworker in the back covered their mouth.

Someone whispered, “Is this real…?”

But no one answered.

Because no one knew anymore where reality ended and grief began.

The cleaning woman’s eyes flickered, as if something buried deep inside her was struggling to surface.

“I… I had a son…” she whispered suddenly, confused. “I think…”
