CHAPTER 2 — THE FOOTAGE NO ONE COULD DENY

CHAPTER 2 — THE FOOTAGE NO ONE COULD DENY

The ballroom fell into absolute silence.

Every eye shifted from Preston's pale face to the security officer holding the tablet.

"I... I think everyone needs to see this," the officer said.

Without waiting for permission, he connected the tablet to the ballroom projector.

The giant screen behind the wedding stage flickered to life.

There was no sound.

Only crystal-clear footage from the camera above the entrance.

The timestamp showed exactly twenty-three minutes earlier.

Guests watched Preston walking casually through the lobby.

He looked around once.

Twice.

Making sure no one was paying attention.

Then he reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out his own phone.

A collective gasp swept across the room.

Slowly...

Deliberately...

He walked behind Sophie's chair while she was laughing with another flower girl.

She never even noticed him.

His hand slipped into the pocket of her tiny denim jacket.

The phone disappeared inside.

Then he calmly walked away.

Seconds later, the video showed him patting his pockets dramatically before shouting,

"My phone is gone!"

Someone near the back whispered,

"Oh my God..."

Another guest covered her mouth.

"No..."

The footage continued.

It showed Preston marching directly toward Sophie.

No searching anyone else.

No hesitation.

He reached into her pocket and pulled out the phone exactly where he had hidden it himself.

Then came the final seconds.

The argument.

Evelyn stepping between her daughter and the crowd.

Preston grabbing the heavy wooden sign.

Swinging it with both hands.

The impact.

Sophie's small body collapsing onto the marble floor.

The projector froze on the exact frame where the sign struck the child.

No one breathed.

The bride slowly stepped away from Preston.

"You lied..."

Her voice cracked.

"You framed an eight-year-old little girl."

Preston tried to speak.

"It isn't what it looks like—"

"It is exactly what it looks like," the security officer interrupted.

"The footage has already been copied."

"And the police are requesting the original recording."

The ballroom doors opened.

Two police officers entered.

One walked directly toward Evelyn.

"Ma'am, the ambulance is outside."

"The paramedics are waiting for your daughter."

The second officer faced Preston.

"Sir..."

"Please place your hands where I can see them."

May you like

For the first time in his life...

Preston realized no one was coming to rescue him.
