The sirens grew louder.
For the first time since Sophie had fallen into my arms, people began looking toward the ballroom entrance instead of at us.
Two police officers hurried inside, followed by the hotel's security manager.
"What happened here?" one officer asked.
Preston stepped forward immediately.
"My niece attacked me after stealing my phone."
He pointed at Sophie.
"She became violent."
The officer looked down at the little girl covered in blood.
Then back at Preston.
"You mean... this eight-year-old attacked you?"
Before Preston could answer, the security manager cleared his throat.
"Officer..."
"The entire ballroom is covered by CCTV."
A heavy silence settled over the room.
Preston's confidence faltered.
"It's unnecessary," he said quickly.
"We've already resolved the misunderstanding."
I looked directly at the officer.
"My daughter was accused of theft."
"Then she was struck with that oak board."
"I'd like the footage preserved."
The security manager nodded.
"It already has been."
He held up a secure drive.
"Our system automatically backed up every camera the moment emergency services were called."
Preston's face turned white.

People often believe that the truth needs a loud voice.
