Chapter 3: The Truth Everyone Ignored

Chapter 3: The Truth Everyone Ignored

An hour later...

The ballroom lights remained on.

No music.

No dancing.

Only silence as the footage appeared on the large projection screen.

Camera One.

Sophie never approached the head table.

Camera Three.

Preston quietly walked behind her chair while everyone watched the bride and groom.

He slipped his phone into the pocket of Sophie's denim jacket.

Camera Five.

Minutes later, he dramatically "discovered" the phone.

Gasps filled the room.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father slowly removed his glasses.

Then came the final recording.

Preston lifting the solid oak menu board.

Me stepping between him and Sophie.

And finally...

The board crashing into my little girl's head.

No one spoke.

No one defended him.

The evidence spoke for itself.

The police officer paused the video.

He looked directly at Preston.

"You're under arrest for assaulting a child, filing a false report, and attempting to fabricate evidence."

Preston looked desperately toward our parents.

"Mom?"

"Dad?"

Neither moved.

For the first time in his life...

No one came to rescue him.
