Chapter 4 — The Woman Behind Elena’s Smile

Chapter 4 — The Woman Behind Elena’s Smile

The first thing Julian noticed about the Valewood family council was that nobody looked angry.

That frightened him more than anger would have.

Anger was honest.

Anger revealed what someone wanted.

But the people standing in the archive doorway wore expressions of calm certainty.

The kind of expressions worn by people who believed the outcome had already been decided.

There were five of them.

Older members of the Valewood family.

Men and women dressed in expensive clothing, carrying themselves with the quiet confidence of people who had never been told no.

At the center stood Victoria Valewood.

Elena’s mother.

Julian immediately noticed something.

Elena stepped backward when Victoria entered.

Not away from danger.

Away from authority.

Like a child who had learned exactly how far she was allowed to stand.

"Julian Ashford."

Victoria spoke his name as if she was reading it from a document.

"Welcome to the family archives."

Julian said nothing.

Victoria smiled.

"You have always been curious."

"Is curiosity a crime here?"

"No."

A pause.

"Only when it leads people to things they are not prepared to understand."

Elena moved forward.

"Mother, this is my responsibility."

Victoria looked at her.

The room changed instantly.

No shouting.

No threats.

Just a single glance.

And Elena became silent.

Julian saw it.

The fear.

The obedience.

The years of conditioning.

"Elena," Victoria said softly.

"Go prepare for the ceremony."

Elena didn't move.

"Now."

For a moment, Julian expected Elena to fight.

Instead, she lowered her head.

And left.

Julian watched the door close behind her.

Something inside him shifted.

Because the Elena he had imagined—the mastermind, the perfect manipulator—did not look like someone controlling a nightmare.

She looked like someone trapped inside one.

Victoria remained.

"The wedding will continue."

Julian laughed quietly.

"After everything I've found?"

"Especially after everything you've found."

That answer unsettled him.

"You don't care that I know?"

Victoria walked toward the old journal.

"Knowledge is not dangerous."

She touched the pages.

"Emotion is."

"What does that mean?"

"It means people make mistakes when they allow feelings to interfere with duty."

Julian stared at her.

"And Elena?"

Victoria's expression barely changed.

"My daughter has always been emotional."

The way she said it made it sound like a weakness.

"She loves you."

Victoria looked at him.

"That is exactly the problem."

Later that night, Julian found Elena in the old greenhouse.

The wedding guests had been told there was a delay.

Nobody questioned it.

Because nobody questioned the Valewoods.

The greenhouse was Elena's only place of escape.

Julian discovered that when he saw the small collection of books and flowers hidden there.

A secret corner of warmth inside a cold mansion.

Elena stood beside the glass wall.

She had removed her veil.

For the first time, Julian saw her without the image she always carried.

No perfect bride.

No Valewood heiress.

Just Elena.

"You're afraid of her."

Elena did not turn around.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised him.

"Your own mother?"

"Especially my own mother."

Julian stepped closer.

"What happened to you?"

For a long time, Elena said nothing.

Then she began.

"When I was seven years old, I learned that this house had rules."

She looked at the flowers.

"Not normal rules."

"What kind?"

"Rules about appearances."

"Rules about obedience."

"Rules about never embarrassing the family."

Julian listened.

"My mother would make me practice conversations."

"Conversations?"

"How to speak to powerful people."

"How to smile."

"How to hide fear."

A painful smile appeared.

"She called it preparation."

"What did you call it?"

"Survival."

Elena explained that her childhood was not filled with affection.

It was filled with lessons.

Every mistake had consequences.

Every emotion was examined.

Every friendship was questioned.

Victoria did not raise a daughter.

She created an heir.

"When I was thirteen, I found the basement."

Julian looked at her.

"You did?"

Elena nodded.

"I found the photographs."

Her voice became quieter.

"I asked my mother who those men were."

"What did she say?"

"She said they were people who failed the family."

Julian felt a chill.

"And you believed her?"

"I was thirteen."

A pause.

"I believed whatever I needed to believe to feel safe."

Years later, Elena began secretly researching.

She discovered the truth.

The missing husbands.

The forged documents.

The family council.

The lies.

"But every time I tried to expose it..."

She stopped.

"What?"

"Someone paid the price."

Julian frowned.

"My cousin tried to leave."

Elena looked away.

"She lost everything."

"Her money?"

"No."

Her voice broke.

"Her child."

Silence filled the greenhouse.

Julian finally understood.

The Valewoods did not control people with violence.

They controlled them with fear.

"You brought me here because you wanted me to expose them."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

"Then why?"

She looked at him.

"Because I thought I could break the cycle."

Julian remembered the photograph.

His name on the wall.

"By marrying me?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"I thought if I chose someone outside the family, someone who couldn't be controlled..."

"You thought I could change things."

"I hoped."

"But you still let me walk into this."

The pain on her face was immediate.

"I know."

A whisper.

"And that is the thing I will never forgive myself for."

For the first time, Julian saw the truth.

Elena was guilty.

But not of what he thought.

She was not the architect.

She was a prisoner who had been handed the keys to someone else's cage.

Before he could respond, a sound came from the greenhouse door.

A slow clap.

Victoria stood there.

"Beautiful."

Elena froze.

Victoria smiled.

"I always wondered when you would finally tell him."

Julian stepped in front of Elena.

Victoria noticed.

And smiled wider.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The reason you chose him."

Victoria looked at Elena.

"You didn't choose a husband."

She looked at Julian.

"You chose a weapon."

Elena's face went pale.

"Mother..."

Victoria turned away.

"The ceremony will continue tomorrow."

Julian stared.

"Tomorrow?"

Victoria smiled.

"Of course."

"After all..."

She looked back at Elena.

"The last thing a Valewood bride ever does..."

"...is disappoint her family."

The door closed.

Julian and Elena stood alone.

But the fear remained.

Because now Julian understood something far more dangerous than a family secret.

Elena was not the villain.

She was the final person standing between the Valewood family...

May you like

and its next victim.
