Chapter 6 — The Bloodline Agreement

Chapter 6 — The Bloodline Agreement

The wedding bell rang thirteen times.

Julian counted every strike.

One.

Two.

Three.

By the fifth ring, he understood something was wrong.

By the tenth, Elena was shaking.

By the thirteenth, the entire mansion had fallen silent.

"The bell only rings thirteen times when the family council reaches a decision," Elena whispered.

Julian looked at her.

"And what kind of decision?"

Elena did not answer immediately.

Because she already knew.

"The kind that cannot be undone."

The words settled between them.

The archive suddenly felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

The old documents surrounding them no longer looked like history.

They looked like evidence.

Footsteps echoed outside.

Not rushed.

Not angry.

Controlled.

Elena quickly folded Alexander's letter.

"Hide it."

Julian stared.

"Why?"

"Because if they find it, they will destroy the only proof that the family can change."

Julian slipped the letter inside his jacket.

The door opened.

A servant stood there.

An older man named Arthur.

Julian recognized him from earlier.

He had served the Valewood family for decades.

"Miss Elena."

His voice was respectful but nervous.

"The council requests your presence."

Elena looked at him.

"Requests?"

Arthur lowered his eyes.

"Orders."

Julian stepped forward.

"I'm coming with her."

Arthur looked surprised.

Then almost sympathetic.

"Mr. Ashford..."

A pause.

"You should understand something."

"What?"

"Everyone who enters the Valewood family believes they have a choice."

Arthur looked toward the hallway.

"Most discover too late that the choice was made before they arrived."

The family council gathered in the grand dining room.

The same room where generations of Valewoods had celebrated births, marriages, and victories.

Tonight, it felt like a courtroom.

Victoria sat at the head of the table.

Around her were members of the family council.

Old names.

Old money.

Old power.

Julian stood beside Elena.

Victoria noticed.

She smiled.

"Protective already."

Julian ignored the comment.

"Why am I here?"

Victoria opened a leather folder.

Inside was a document.

"The Bloodline Agreement."

Elena immediately looked away.

Julian noticed.

"You know what that is."

She whispered:

"Yes."

Victoria placed the document on the table.

"The agreement has existed for over one hundred years."

Julian walked closer.

"Between who?"

"Between the women of the Valewood bloodline."

He opened the document.

The paper was old.

But the signatures were clear.

Generation after generation.

Every female heir.

Every future matriarch.

A promise.

Julian read the first paragraph.

"The Valewood name must survive above personal desire."

The second:

"Marriage shall serve the protection of the family fortune."

The third:

"Secrets discovered by outsiders must be controlled before they threaten the bloodline."

Julian looked up.

"Controlled."

Victoria smiled.

"A careful word."

"A dishonest word."

The room became silent.

Julian continued reading.

Then he found something that made his blood run cold.

"The chosen husband shall surrender all claims to Valewood assets upon marriage and become bound by family obligations."

He looked at Elena.

"This is why the contract existed."

She nodded.

"They never wanted husbands."

Her voice was quiet.

"They wanted access."

Access to wealth.

Connections.

Power.

Julian turned to Victoria.

"You have been doing this for generations."

Victoria did not deny it.

"Because generations survive only when they understand sacrifice."

Julian laughed.

"Sacrifice?"

He pointed at the contract.

"You erased people's lives."

Victoria's expression hardened.

"You see cruelty."

"I see necessity."

"That's what every person who commits evil says."

Several council members reacted.

But Victoria remained calm.

"You are emotional."

"No."

Julian stepped closer.

"I'm human."

For the first time, Victoria looked slightly annoyed.

"You have no understanding of what this family endured."

"Then tell me."

Silence.

Victoria looked at Elena.

"Tell him."

Elena froze.

"Mother..."

"Tell him what happens when a Valewood woman refuses."

Julian looked at Elena.

She looked terrified.

Finally, she spoke.

"When I was eighteen, I tried to leave."

The room became completely silent.

"I changed my name."

"I applied to universities far away."

"I thought I could disappear."

Julian listened.

"But my mother found me."

"What did she do?"

Elena swallowed.

"She showed me the agreement."

Victoria interrupted.

"Because she needed to understand responsibility."

Julian turned.

"Responsibility?"

Victoria's voice remained cold.

"The Valewood family owns businesses, charities, properties, thousands of employees."

"One careless person can destroy everything."

Julian looked at Elena.

"And she was just a child."

Victoria did not respond.

That was the answer.

Elena walked toward the contract.

"Why are you showing him this?"

Victoria looked at her daughter.

"Because tonight he becomes part of the family."

Julian's expression changed.

"No."

Victoria smiled.

"You misunderstand."

She touched the document.

"He already is."

Julian felt a chill.

"What?"

Victoria turned the contract around.

At the bottom of the page was a section he had never seen.

A section added recently.

Future Husband Acceptance Clause

And beneath it...

His signature.

Julian stared.

"I never signed this."

Victoria smiled.

"You signed the marriage agreement."

"The rest was attached."

A wave of anger rushed through him.

"You forged my signature."

"No."

Victoria leaned forward.

"We used your trust."

The difference was worse.

Julian looked at Elena.

"You knew?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"No."

A pause.

"I knew there was a contract."

"But I didn't know they added this."

Victoria stood.

"Enough."

The room became silent.

"The ceremony will happen tomorrow."

Julian stared at her.

"You think I'll still marry her?"

Victoria smiled.

"I think you will."

"Why?"

She looked at Elena.

"Because unlike previous husbands..."

A pause.

"You care about her."

Julian felt his anger disappear for one second.

Because that was the trap.

They did not need chains.

They did not need locked doors.

They used love.

That night, Elena found Julian outside the mansion.

The rain had stopped.

The garden was silent.

"I'm sorry."

Julian did not turn.

"How much did you know?"

"Not enough."

"That's not an answer."

Elena stepped closer.

"I knew my family was dangerous."

She looked at the mansion.

"I didn't know they had already planned your entire life."

Julian looked at her.

"Then help me destroy it."

Elena froze.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

Her voice broke.

"The Bloodline Agreement isn't just a contract."

"Then what is it?"

She whispered:

"It's a promise."

Julian waited.

"A promise that every Valewood heir must protect the family..."

She looked toward the mansion.

"...even if they have to become monsters to do it."

Thunder rolled in the distance.

Julian held the hidden letter from Alexander.

The first husband had warned him.

Do not fight the bride.

Find the woman behind the veil.

Now he understood why.

Because Elena was not the person holding the knife.

May you like

She was the person standing closest to it.
