Chapter 1 – Every Camera Has a Memory

The silence inside Hawthorne Museum became heavier than panic.

Grant Holloway stood frozen, his expensive shoes surrounded by shards of crystal. The laughter that had filled the gallery only moments before had disappeared.

A tactical officer stepped forward.

"Mr. Holloway, remain where you are."

Grant scoffed.

"You have no authority over me."

Before anyone answered, every display screen throughout the museum flickered to life.

The museum's security director appeared on the monitors.

"Attention, guests. The museum is under legal evidence preservation protocol. All video, audio, and biometric recordings have been secured. No files can be deleted or altered."

A murmur swept across the room.

Judges exchanged nervous looks.

Politicians quietly stepped away from Grant.

Several guests suddenly remembered exactly what they had witnessed.

Grant reached for his phone.

"No signal?"

The security director smiled on-screen.

"The communications network has been isolated. Your devices are now preserving location and recording data for investigators."

For the first time in years...

Grant realized money could not buy control over this room.

Mara simply watched.
