Chapter 10 – The Woman They Tried to Destroy

Chapter 10 – The Woman They Tried to Destroy

Morning arrived without mercy.

The sun rose over Chicago in streaks of pale gold, but inside St. Catherine's Medical Center, there was no sense of a new beginning.

Only waiting.

Waiting for test results.

Waiting for contractions to stop.

Waiting for two tiny heartbeats to keep fighting.

Every second felt borrowed.

Victor Ashcroft had faced government investigations, hostile takeovers, and financial crises worth billions.

None of them had prepared him for sitting outside an operating room with folded hands, staring at a closed door.

He hadn't slept.

He hadn't touched the coffee someone had left beside him.

His eyes never left the red light above the delivery suite.

When the doors finally opened, he stood before anyone spoke.

Dr. Ellis removed his surgical cap.

"They're alive."

Victor closed his eyes.

"But..."

The doctor's expression remained serious.

"Mara's placenta partially separated."

"We managed to stabilize her."

"The twins are still inside."

"For now."

Victor slowly exhaled.

"How long?"

"If we're fortunate..."

"Several more days."

"If not..."

He didn't finish.

He didn't need to.

A Mother Still Fighting

I woke to the steady rhythm of machines.

The room smelled of antiseptic and fresh linen.

Sunlight filtered through half-closed blinds.

For several seconds, I couldn't remember where I was.

Then the bruises reminded me.

My cheek throbbed.

My ribs ached.

My wrists burned where Adrian's fingers had bruised them.

Most of all...

My heart hurt.

A gentle hand rested over mine.

Victor.

"You scared us."

"I scared myself."

He smiled sadly.

"But you're here."

I looked down at my swollen stomach.

"And them?"

"They're stubborn."

I laughed softly.

"They get that from you."

"No."

Victor squeezed my hand.

"They get it from their mother."

News Travels Fast

By nine o'clock, every major financial news network carried the same headline.

CEO Adrian Cole Suspended After Emergency Board Vote

Then another story broke.

Domestic Violence Investigation Linked to Corporate Crisis

The details remained limited.

The names of the victim and unborn children were withheld.

But the speculation spread like wildfire.

Television anchors debated corporate ethics.

Legal analysts discussed fiduciary responsibility.

Social media exploded with rumors.

No one knew the entire truth.

Not yet.

The Boardroom

Adrian entered company headquarters through the underground parking garage.

No reporters.

No cameras.

No applause.

His employee identification card no longer opened the executive elevator.

A security guard approached politely.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"I need to verify authorization."

Adrian stared.

"You know me."

"Yes, sir."

"But policy has changed."

After twenty years of walking into the building without question...

He was escorted upstairs like a visitor.

The boardroom doors opened.

Twelve directors sat around the polished walnut table.

No one smiled.

Chairman Whitman spoke first.

"Good morning."

Adrian remained standing.

"I want to see my wife."

Whitman folded his hands.

"This meeting concerns the company."

"My wife is more important."

A long silence followed.

Then one director quietly replied,

"She should have been."

The words struck harder than Adrian expected.

The Evidence No One Could Ignore

Michael Reynolds connected a projector.

The screen illuminated.

Photographs appeared one after another.

Financial reports.

Unauthorized expense accounts.

Corporate reimbursements.

Luxury gifts purchased with company funds.

Private flights.

Jewelry.

Hotel suites.

Every transaction connected to one name.

Vanessa Carter.

Adrian frowned.

"What is this?"

Michael answered,

"The internal audit."

"We completed it overnight."

Another page appeared.

Unauthorized expenditures: $4.8 million.

Another.

Misclassified consulting fees.

Another.

False vendor invoices.

The room fell silent.

Adrian looked from one page to the next.

"I never approved these."

"No."

Michael nodded.

"You didn't."

"You ignored them."

The Woman in Red Falls

Vanessa stood inside her luxury apartment, throwing designer handbags across the living room.

Every credit card had been declined.

Every bank account frozen.

The landlord had already called twice.

Then came another knock.

Louder this time.

She opened the door.

Two investigators stood outside.

"Miss Carter?"

"Yes?"

"We're with the Financial Crimes Unit."

Her heartbeat quickened.

"We have questions regarding payments received from Cole Ventures."

"I..."

She stepped backward.

"I need a lawyer."

"You certainly do."

By noon...

Her face appeared across every financial news website.

Not as Adrian's glamorous companion.

As a person under investigation.

The internet, which had celebrated her beauty for months, suddenly turned merciless.

The comments poured in.

"She spent investors' money."

"She knew exactly what she was doing."

"She wasn't the prize. She was the expense."

Vanessa shut off her phone.

For the first time in years...

Silence frightened her.

A Visit That Was Refused

That afternoon, Adrian arrived at St. Catherine's Medical Center.

He carried no flowers.

No gifts.

Only exhaustion.

The bruises on his knuckles had darkened overnight.

He approached the reception desk.

"I'm here to see my wife."

The receptionist typed quietly.

Then looked up.

"I'm sorry."

"Mrs. Mara Ashcroft has declined all visitors."

He blinked.

"Ashcroft?"

"Yes, sir."

The name sounded unfamiliar on her lips.

As though he had never truly known the woman he married.

"There must be a mistake."

"There isn't."

He lowered his voice.

"Please."

"I just need five minutes."

Before she could answer, Victor appeared from the elevator.

He walked toward Adrian slowly.

Neither man spoke until they stood face-to-face.

Victor's voice remained calm.

"You should leave."

"I need to see her."

"You needed to see her yesterday."

"I made a mistake."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"No."

"You made a choice."

Adrian lowered his head.

"I'll spend the rest of my life fixing it."

Victor studied him for several seconds.

"When Mara was twelve..."

He began quietly.

"She rescued an injured sparrow."

"The bird's wing was broken."

"She stayed awake three nights feeding it."

Adrian listened without interrupting.

"When it finally flew away..."

Victor smiled faintly.

"She cried."

"Do you know why?"

Adrian shook his head.

"Because she said love means protecting something weaker than yourself."

The smile disappeared.

"You taught her the opposite."

Adrian's shoulders slumped.

"I love her."

Victor answered without anger.

"I believe you."

That surprised Adrian.

"Then why won't you let me see her?"

Victor looked toward the intensive maternity ward.

"Because right now..."

"My daughter needs peace more than she needs promises."

Inside the Hospital Room

I stood beside the window with assistance from a nurse.

Only for a moment.

Only because I wanted to see the sky.

The city looked peaceful from ten floors above.

No reporters.

No lawyers.

No board meetings.

Just clouds drifting slowly over Lake Michigan.

Dr. Ellis entered quietly.

"You shouldn't stand too long."

"I know."

He adjusted the monitor.

"The babies like your heartbeat better when you're calm."

I smiled.

"They've always been good listeners."

He hesitated.

"Someone came to see you."

I already knew who.

"Did my father send him away?"

"Yes."

"Good."

I looked back toward the window.

Not because I hated Adrian.

Because I wasn't ready.

Some wounds stop bleeding long before they stop hurting.

That evening, another envelope arrived at the hospital.

No return address.

Inside was only a single sheet of paper.

Written in Adrian's unmistakable handwriting.

I don't deserve forgiveness.

I don't deserve another chance.

But if our children ever ask who destroyed our family...

Tell them it was me.

And tell them I'll spend whatever remains of my life becoming someone worthy of the father they almost lost before they were even born.

I folded the letter carefully.

Placed it inside the drawer.

Then rested both hands over my stomach.

The twins kicked almost at the same time.

A faint smile touched my lips.

Outside my room, an empire had already fallen.

Inside...

A new family was still fighting to be born.
