Chapter 5 – The Doctor Who Called the Police

Chapter 5 – The Doctor Who Called the Police

The first siren never reached the front door.

It stopped halfway up the winding driveway.

Not an ambulance.

A black luxury SUV bearing the discreet silver crest of Ashcroft Strategic Holdings.

Behind it came another vehicle.

Then another.

The mansion that had welcomed investors less than an hour earlier was now filling with attorneys, compliance officers, and security personnel.

Inside, panic spread faster than gossip.

No one knew exactly what had happened.

Everyone knew it was serious.

Upstairs, I could barely keep my eyes open.

The cramps were no longer random.

They came in waves.

Strong enough to steal my breath.

I pressed both hands over my belly.

"Just a little longer," I whispered.

"My brave babies... just a little longer."

A tiny kick answered.

Then another.

Mrs. Alvarez squeezed my shoulder.

"They're still fighting."

"So am I."

The bedroom door burst open.

Dr. Nathan Ellis entered without waiting for permission.

His white coat fluttered behind him as he crossed the room.

He stopped the instant he saw me.

His face changed.

Confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then pure fury.

"My God..."

He dropped to one knee beside me.

"Mara."

He carefully examined the bruises across my cheek.

The swelling around my jaw.

The scrape behind my ear.

Then he noticed the blood staining the hardwood floor.

His expression turned to ice.

"What happened?"

Before I could answer—

Adrian stepped into the room.

"Doctor, she's overreacting."

Dr. Ellis slowly stood.

"You."

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

"You moved her?"

"I had to."

"You dragged a woman on strict bed rest out of bed?"

Adrian folded his arms.

"My wife refused to come downstairs."

Dr. Ellis stared at him.

Then quietly asked,

"Did you drag her by her ankles?"

No one answered.

The silence was answer enough.

Dr. Ellis looked back at me.

"When did the bleeding start?"

"About..."

I glanced toward the clock.

"Twenty minutes ago."

His jaw tightened.

"Contractions?"

"They're getting closer."

He checked his watch.

"How often?"

"Maybe..."

"I don't know."

"They hurt too much to count."

He immediately pulled a small Doppler monitor from his medical bag.

Mrs. Alvarez helped lift my nightgown just enough for him to examine my abdomen.

The room became deathly quiet.

Everyone waited.

A heartbeat filled the air.

Fast.

Strong.

Then another.

A second tiny heartbeat.

Dr. Ellis exhaled.

"They're both alive."

Tears burned my eyes.

"Thank God."

"But..."

His voice grew serious.

"They're under stress."

He looked directly at Adrian.

"If she had hit her abdomen instead of her head..."

He stopped.

The unfinished sentence hung in the room like smoke.

No one needed him to finish it.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Doctor, isn't this a little dramatic?"

Dr. Ellis turned toward her.

"You are?"

She smiled.

"A family friend."

Mrs. Alvarez muttered under her breath.

"That's one way to describe a mistress."

Vanessa's face flushed.

"I don't see how that's relevant."

"It became relevant," Dr. Ellis replied coldly, "the moment you stood there and watched an assault without trying to stop it."

Adrian stepped between them.

"Enough."

"My wife isn't dying."

Dr. Ellis looked at him as though he were seeing a stranger.

"No."

He answered quietly.

"But if we waste another ten minutes arguing..."

"She might."

The room froze.

The Call

Dr. Ellis pulled out his phone.

Adrian frowned.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm requesting an emergency obstetric transport."

"Fine."

"And I'm reporting a suspected domestic assault."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"You can't."

"I already have."

He pressed the speaker button.

"Emergency dispatch."

A calm voice answered.

"This is Dr. Nathan Ellis, license number 481762."

"I need an advanced maternal life-support unit."

"Thirty-four-week twin pregnancy."

"High-risk patient."

"Active bleeding."

"Physical assault."

He paused.

"Yes."

"I also need law enforcement."

Adrian lunged forward.

"Hang up."

Dr. Ellis didn't even flinch.

Instead, he calmly stepped aside.

"You touch me..."

He said quietly.

"And you'll add assaulting a physician to tonight's list."

Adrian stopped.

Not because he suddenly found his conscience.

Because several people had appeared behind Dr. Ellis.

Three Ashcroft security officers.

They stood silently in the doorway.

Watching.

Waiting.

The lead officer spoke.

"Mr. Cole."

"Our instructions are clear."

"You are not to interfere with Mrs. Cole's medical treatment."

Adrian stared.

"And who gave you those instructions?"

The officer answered without hesitation.

"The majority shareholder."

Adrian looked at me.

No.

Not at me.

At the woman he had never bothered to understand.

Downstairs

The ballroom had emptied by half.

Investors stood in small groups reading emails on their phones.

One man looked up from his screen.

"This can't be right."

Another replied,

"It came directly from the transfer agent."

A third whispered,

"They removed Adrian as acting CEO."

Someone laughed nervously.

"Effective immediately."

The laughter died almost instantly.

Because it wasn't a rumor.

It was real.

Michael Reynolds—the company's CFO—walked into the mansion carrying a thick binder.

He looked exhausted.

When he spotted Adrian at the top of the staircase, he called out,

"We need to talk."

Adrian barked back,

"Not now."

Michael didn't move.

"It can't wait."

"It already has."

He slowly climbed the stairs.

Every guest watched.

Every employee watched.

Every servant watched.

Years of carefully maintained authority began to crack.

Michael stopped outside the bedroom.

He looked at me first.

Then at the blood.

His face tightened.

"You didn't tell me..."

I smiled weakly.

"I've been busy."

He nodded.

"I can see that."

Then he turned to Adrian.

"The board voted."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"I don't care."

"You should."

Michael handed him another document.

"You've been suspended."

Silence.

"No."

Adrian shook his head.

"I founded that company."

Michael's voice remained steady.

"You founded it."

"But you no longer control it."

The Evidence

Dr. Ellis quietly photographed every injury.

Bruises on my wrists.

Finger marks around my ankles.

The swelling on my cheek.

The blood on the floor.

Each image was automatically uploaded into my medical record.

Then he dictated his findings.

"Patient presents with injuries consistent with forcible dragging."

"Evidence of repeated blunt-force trauma."

"High-risk obstetric complications."

"Immediate hospitalization required."

He stopped recording.

Then looked directly at Adrian.

"If she loses these babies..."

The room became silent.

"...every photograph I just took will be shown to a jury."

For the first time that evening...

Adrian looked frightened.

Not because of the company.

Not because of the takeover.

Because he finally realized this was no longer a private family matter.

It had become evidence.

The Arrival

The distant sound of another siren echoed through the estate.

This one didn't stop at the gates.

It drove straight to the front entrance.

Red and blue lights flashed through the mansion's tall windows.

Guests rushed toward the foyer.

Someone whispered,

"The police..."

Vanessa's face turned white.

"No..."

Dr. Ellis gently squeezed my hand.

"They're here."

I closed my eyes.

Not from exhaustion.

From relief.

For the first time in years...

Someone had believed me before asking me to prove I deserved help.

Heavy footsteps filled the marble hallway.

A voice rang through the foyer.

"Lake County Sheriff's Office."

"Is everyone safe?"

No one answered immediately.

Then Mrs. Alvarez looked toward the staircase and spoke with quiet certainty.

"Not yet."

She pointed toward the bedroom.

"The victim is upstairs."

Every eye in the mansion turned toward Adrian.

And for the first time in his life...

The richest man in the room looked exactly like what he had become.

A suspect.
