Chapter 4 – The Woman in the Red Dress

Chapter 4 – The Woman in the Red Dress
The front door opened with a heavy thud.
The music stopped.
Conversations died in mid-sentence.
Every guest turned toward the marble foyer as six men and two women entered the mansion.
They wore dark suits.
No smiles.
No hesitation.
Each carried a leather portfolio embossed with the same silver emblem.
Ashcroft Strategic Holdings.
The room fell into an uneasy silence.
One of Adrian's investors frowned.
"I know that logo..."
Another man's face paled.
"Impossible."
A third whispered,
"They don't visit companies..."
"They buy them."
Upstairs, I heard every word.
Mrs. Alvarez knelt beside me, pressing a folded towel gently against the blood soaking through my nightgown.
"Stay with me, Mrs. Cole."
"I'm trying."
My breathing had become shallow.
Each cramp came closer than the last.
I closed my eyes for one second.
Not to rest.
To listen.
Downstairs...
The war had officially begun.
Adrian stormed toward the staircase.
"No one moves."
He pointed at me.
"You stay here."
I almost smiled.
As if he still had the authority to give orders.
He disappeared downstairs with Vanessa hurrying after him, the heels of her crimson dress clicking sharply against the hardwood floor.
She still looked beautiful.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect hair.
A diamond bracelet glittering around her wrist.
She had dressed for victory.
She had no idea she was walking into a funeral.
The funeral of the future she thought she was about to inherit.
The Grand Entrance
When Adrian reached the foyer, the guests automatically stepped aside.
The lead attorney extended a sealed envelope.
"Mr. Adrian Cole."
"What is this?"
"You've been formally notified."
"I'm in the middle of a private event."
The attorney's expression never changed.
"So are we."
He placed the envelope into Adrian's hand.
"Please read page one."
Adrian tore it open.
His eyes scanned the first paragraph.
Then the second.
Color drained from his face.
"This is ridiculous."
One investor stepped closer.
"What happened?"
Adrian folded the papers before anyone else could see them.
"Nothing."
The attorney calmly replied,
"Mr. Cole, withholding material corporate information from shareholders would be unwise."
Several guests exchanged nervous glances.
Vanessa slipped beside Adrian and wrapped an arm around his.
"What are they talking about?"
He forced a smile.
"Just lawyers creating unnecessary drama."
But his voice lacked conviction.
He looked back at the first page.
Across the top, in bold letters, were six words he never imagined seeing.
NOTICE OF EMERGENCY CONTROL TRANSFER
The Woman Everyone Ignored
Vanessa studied the attorneys carefully.
Something about them unsettled her.
She had spent years attending charity galas, business dinners, and luxury fundraisers.
She knew powerful people.
These people were different.
They weren't trying to impress anyone.
They already possessed the power everyone else chased.
One of the female attorneys glanced toward the staircase.
"How is Mrs. Cole?"
Adrian stiffened.
"Why?"
"Because every action we're taking tonight was authorized under her legal authority."
Several guests looked upstairs.
Confusion spread across the room.
One whispered,
"Mara?"
"The pregnant wife?"
Another laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
Behind the Smile
Vanessa squeezed Adrian's arm harder.
"You told me she was just a housewife."
"I..."
For the first time since she'd known him...
Adrian didn't have an answer.
Vanessa had never cared much about Mara.
She considered her boring.
Predictable.
Too quiet.
Too polite.
Exactly the kind of woman who disappeared after divorce.
Vanessa had imagined herself moving into the master bedroom before the divorce papers were even signed.
She had already chosen new furniture.
New artwork.
Even a wedding dress.
She had rehearsed interviews in front of the mirror.
"Love found us unexpectedly..."
"None of us planned for this..."
"Families evolve..."
She loved saying those lines.
They made betrayal sound elegant.
Now...
A tiny crack appeared in that fantasy.
The Call She Couldn't Ignore
Her designer handbag vibrated.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
She ignored it.
The phone continued ringing.
Finally she glanced at the screen.
UNKNOWN NUMBER
She rejected the call.
It rang again immediately.
Annoyed, she answered.
"What?"
A rough male voice replied.
"Miss Carter."
Her smile disappeared.
"You've been difficult to reach."
"I don't know who this is."
"You know exactly who I am."
Her stomach tightened.
The guests continued whispering around her, but suddenly she couldn't hear any of them.
Only the voice.
"You missed two payments."
"I told you I'd have the money."
"You said that last month."
"I just need another week."
"You have until tomorrow."
The line went quiet for a second.
Then came the sentence that made her blood run cold.
"If you fail again..."
"We'll collect another way."
The call ended.
She stared at the screen.
Her hands trembled.
No.
Not now.
Not tonight.
A Life Built on Borrowed Money
Nobody inside the mansion knew the truth.
Not Adrian.
Not Margaret.
Not the socialites who admired Vanessa's luxury lifestyle.
Everything they saw...
Was rented.
The penthouse apartment.
The designer wardrobe.
The sports car.
The jewelry.
Even the crimson dress she wore tonight had been purchased with borrowed money.
She had accumulated over three million dollars in gambling debts over the past two years.
Private poker clubs.
Underground casinos.
High-stakes baccarat tables where losing one hand cost more than most people earned in a year.
At first, Adrian had paid.
Then he stopped asking questions.
Eventually...
He stopped noticing.
She simply found money elsewhere.
The people lending it never smiled.
Cracks in the Fairy Tale
Adrian noticed Vanessa's expression.
"What happened?"
She quickly locked her phone.
"Nothing."
"You're pale."
"I'm fine."
She forced a smile.
The same carefully practiced smile she used at charity events.
But this time...
It didn't convince him.
Across the room, one investor quietly walked toward the exit.
Then another.
Soon a third.
Nobody wanted to remain at a party surrounded by emergency lawyers and frozen assets.
One man muttered,
"I'll call you tomorrow."
Adrian grabbed his sleeve.
"You're leaving?"
"My compliance department insists."
"This is a misunderstanding."
"Maybe."
The investor gently pulled away.
"But I don't invest in misunderstandings."
The front door closed behind him.
Then another guest left.
And another.
Upstairs
Mrs. Alvarez finished speaking with Dr. Ellis.
She looked at me.
"He's on his way."
"Good."
"You need a hospital."
"I know."
She hesitated.
"But..."
"What?"
"The bleeding has increased."
I lowered my eyes.
The towel beneath my hand was nearly soaked through.
A wave of dizziness washed over me.
No.
Not yet.
Just a little longer.
The takeover had to finish.
If Adrian regained control before the board acted...
Everything would become harder.
My phone vibrated softly.
Mrs. Alvarez handed it to me.
A secure notification appeared.
HOSTILE ACQUISITION: 82% COMPLETE
Board quorum achieved.
Emergency asset protection activated.
Another message followed.
Primary banking relationships transferred.
Then—
Residential property ownership review initiated.
I exhaled slowly.
Almost there.
The Red Dress Begins to Tear
Downstairs, Vanessa watched another guest leave.
Then another.
The ballroom that had been filled with laughter thirty minutes earlier now echoed with anxious whispers.
She suddenly understood something.
If Adrian lost everything...
She lost everything too.
No mansion.
No luxury vacations.
No private shopping accounts.
No future as Mrs. Adrian Cole.
Only debts.
And the people waiting to collect them.
For the first time in years...
Vanessa wasn't thinking about Mara.
She was thinking about survival.
She turned to Adrian.
"We need to fix this."
"I'm trying."
"No."
She grabbed his wrist.
"You don't understand."
He frowned.
"What?"
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
She couldn't tell him.
She couldn't admit the truth.
Because if Adrian learned about the gambling debts...
He would abandon her before sunrise.
So she lied.
Again.
"We just need to make Mara undo whatever she signed."
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
His eyes hardened.
"She will."
Neither of them realized...
The window for stopping me had already closed.
My phone vibrated one final time.
I unlocked it with trembling fingers.
Across the screen appeared a single message.
HOSTILE ACQUISITION COMPLETE
CONTROL SUCCESSFULLY TRANSFERRED
I closed my eyes.
Not in relief.
In gratitude.
One battle was over.
But another was about to begin.
Because downstairs...
The woman in the red dress was about to discover that losing Adrian's fortune was the least of her problems.
