Chapter 5: The Hidden Housekeeper

Chapter 5: The Hidden Housekeeper

The surveillance van remained parked nearly half a mile from the Prescott estate.

Detective Daniel Brooks replayed the footage for the third time.

On the screen, Margaret Prescott calmly opened the hidden safe behind the oil painting, removed a tiny memory card, examined it for only a few seconds, and locked it away again.

Brooks paused the video.

"She's protecting that card more carefully than her own fortune."

One of the officers nodded.

"If it's the evidence Emily mentioned..."

Brooks shook his head.

"No."

"I think it's worse."

A Knock at Dawn

The following morning, Colonel Victoria Hart had barely finished pouring coffee in Emily's hospital room when there was a quiet knock on the door.

A middle-aged nurse stepped inside.

"Colonel?"

"Yes?"

"A woman is asking to see you."

"Name?"

The nurse looked uncertain.

"She refused to give one."

Victoria immediately became alert.

"Did she say why?"

The nurse nodded.

"She said..."

The nurse lowered her voice.

'Tell Colonel Hart the housekeeper finally found her courage.'

Victoria looked at Detective Brooks, who happened to be reviewing case files nearby.

He stood immediately.

"Bring her in."

Rosa Martinez

A frail woman in her late sixties slowly entered the room.

Her gray hair was neatly tied back.

She wore a simple blue cardigan over a faded floral dress.

Her hands trembled as she clutched an old leather handbag.

She looked nothing like someone who had spent nearly three decades serving one of America's wealthiest families.

Emily gasped.

"Rosa..."

The elderly woman smiled sadly.

"My little Miss Emily."

Emily burst into tears.

Without hesitation, Rosa walked over and hugged her.

For several moments, neither woman spoke.

Victoria watched quietly.

She had never met Rosa before.

But the warmth in that embrace told her everything.

This woman genuinely loved her daughter.

Twenty-Eight Years of Silence

Detective Brooks introduced himself and switched on a digital recorder.

"Mrs. Martinez..."

Rosa interrupted softly.

"Miss."

Brooks smiled politely.

"My apologies."

"Miss Martinez, how long did you work for the Prescott family?"

Rosa folded her hands.

"Twenty-eight years."

Victoria raised an eyebrow.

"Since before Ethan was born?"

Rosa nodded.

"I watched both Prescott boys grow up."

She sighed deeply.

"And I watched what that family became."

The Girl Who Always Said Thank You

Rosa looked at Emily with tears in her eyes.

"When Miss Emily arrived after the wedding..."

She smiled gently.

"...she thanked every servant by name."

"She learned Spanish just to speak with the kitchen staff."

Emily smiled faintly through her tears.

"Maria taught me."

Rosa nodded.

"She remembered birthdays."

"She helped the gardeners plant flowers."

"She treated everyone with kindness."

Her smile faded.

"Margaret hated that."

Victoria frowned.

"Why?"

"Because kind people earn loyalty."

"And Margaret wanted loyalty to belong only to herself."

Behind Closed Doors

Rosa's voice grew quieter.

"I cleaned the guest house every morning."

She looked down.

"The first day Miss Emily was locked inside..."

"I thought it was a misunderstanding."

"The second day..."

"I became worried."

"The third day..."

She paused.

"I heard her crying."

Emily lowered her head.

Victoria reached for her hand.

Rosa continued.

"I asked Mr. Ethan why she wasn't allowed to leave."

"What did he say?" Brooks asked.

"He smiled."

The room became silent.

"He told me..."

'A wife sometimes needs time to learn obedience.'

Victoria's jaw tightened.

Brooks wrote every word.

The Hidden Cameras

"There was something the family didn't know."

Rosa carefully opened her handbag.

From inside, she removed an old envelope.

"I made copies."

Brooks leaned forward.

"Copies of what?"

"The security recordings."

Victoria looked surprised.

"I thought they were erased."

"They were."

Rosa nodded.

"But every week I backed them up."

Emily stared at her.

"You did?"

Rosa smiled sadly.

"I started after I saw Margaret slap a maid."

Brooks looked at the envelope.

"Do you still have them?"

Rosa slowly shook her head.

"No."

The room fell silent.

Victoria frowned.

"What happened?"

"I hid them somewhere else."

Why She Stayed

Victoria asked the question that had been troubling her.

"If you knew Emily was suffering..."

"Why didn't you call the police?"

Rosa's eyes filled with tears.

"I tried."

Everyone looked at her.

"The first time..."

She rolled up her sleeve.

A faded scar ran along her forearm.

"Margaret's security chief pushed me down the cellar stairs."

Emily covered her mouth.

"The second time..."

Rosa swallowed.

"My grandson lost his college scholarship."

"The third time..."

She closed her eyes.

"They threatened to report my son to immigration."

Victoria's expression softened.

"So they trapped you too."

Rosa nodded.

"I was afraid."

"I hate myself for waiting this long."

Emily reached across the bed and took Rosa's hand.

"You came."

Rosa looked at her.

"I should have come sooner."

Emily gently shook her head.

"But you came."

The Secret Hiding Place

Brooks returned to the most important question.

"Where are the backup recordings?"

Rosa looked toward the hospital door before answering.

"I couldn't keep them at the mansion."

"So where?"

"There was only one place Margaret never entered."

Emily suddenly looked confused.

"The old chapel?"

Rosa smiled.

"You remember."

Behind the Prescott estate stood a small stone chapel built nearly a century earlier.

The family used it only for weddings and funerals.

The servants cleaned it.

Margaret almost never visited.

"I hid everything there."

Victoria leaned forward.

"Where exactly?"

Rosa answered quietly.

"Inside the hollow base of the wooden cross behind the altar."

Detective Brooks immediately stood.

"I'm getting a search warrant."

Rosa suddenly grabbed his sleeve.

"Detective..."

He stopped.

"You must hurry."

"Why?"

Rosa's face turned pale.

"Because Margaret knows I disappeared."

Panic at the Prescott Estate

At that exact moment, inside the Prescott mansion, Margaret stood in the servants' hallway.

Every employee had been gathered together.

Her eyes scanned every face.

"Where is Rosa?"

No one answered.

Margaret looked at the head butler.

"You haven't seen her?"

"No, ma'am."

Margaret's voice became colder.

"When did she leave?"

"This morning."

"Without permission?"

"Yes."

Margaret's hands slowly curled into fists.

She understood immediately.

Rosa hadn't simply left.

She had defected.

The Hunt Begins

Margaret walked briskly into her private office.

Brandon followed close behind.

"What's wrong?"

Margaret didn't answer.

She opened another hidden drawer beneath her desk and removed a disposable cellphone.

She dialed a number from memory.

A man's voice answered after two rings.

"I'm listening."

Margaret spoke only one sentence.

"Find Rosa Martinez before the police do."

The line went dead.

Brandon looked uneasy.

"You think she talked?"

Margaret stared out the window.

"I know she did."

The Ambush

Two hours later, Detective Brooks, accompanied by two patrol officers, drove Rosa toward a temporary safe house arranged by the district attorney's office.

Rain began falling again as their unmarked sedan traveled along a quiet country road.

Rosa sat in the back seat beside Victoria.

Emily remained safely at the hospital under police protection.

Everything seemed calm.

Too calm.

Brooks glanced into the rearview mirror.

A black SUV had been following them for nearly ten minutes.

Same distance.

Same speed.

He quietly rested his hand on the radio.

"Stay alert."

Victoria noticed the change in his expression.

"What is it?"

Before Brooks could answer—

The SUV suddenly accelerated.

Its engine roared.

It swerved into the opposite lane...

Then slammed directly into the side of their car.

CRASH!

Metal screamed.

Glass exploded across the roadway.

The police sedan spun violently before crashing into a roadside ditch.

Airbags erupted.

For several terrifying seconds...

Everything went black.

As smoke drifted from the wreckage, a masked man climbed out of the black SUV carrying a handgun.

He walked slowly toward the overturned police car.

Inside, Victoria forced open her damaged door despite the pain in her shoulder.

She looked toward the back seat.

Rosa was bleeding from a cut above her forehead.

Brooks reached for his service weapon.

But the impact had thrown it beneath the dashboard.

The masked gunman raised his pistol.

He wasn't there to rob them.

He wasn't there to scare them.

May you like

He had come to make sure Rosa Martinez never testified.
