Chapter 7: The Family's Darkest Secret

Chapter 7: The Family's Darkest Secret

The rain had finally stopped.

Gray clouds drifted slowly across the North Carolina sky as Detective Daniel Brooks stood outside the small stone chapel hidden behind the Prescott estate.

The building looked ordinary.

Old stained-glass windows.

Weathered brick walls.

A rusted iron cross.

No one would have guessed it might contain the evidence capable of destroying one of America's most influential families.

Brooks adjusted the search warrant in his hand.

"Let's begin."

Two forensic investigators carefully pushed open the heavy wooden doors.

The chapel had been cleaned recently.

Far too recently.

Fresh candle wax still burned near the altar.

The scent of bleach lingered in the air.

Someone had been here.

And they had expected visitors.

The Coffin That Didn't Exist

At the center of the chapel stood a polished mahogany coffin covered with white lilies.

A silver plaque on the lid read:

Daniel Prescott

Brooks frowned.

He had already checked every public record.

No birth certificate.

No death certificate.

No obituary.

No funeral notice.

No one named Daniel Prescott officially existed.

One of the forensic officers looked at him.

"Should we open it?"

Brooks nodded.

"Record everything."

The lid creaked open.

Inside...

There was no body.

Only bags of sand wrapped in white linen.

The coffin had never been meant for a funeral.

It had been built to hide something.

Beneath the Coffin

The investigators carefully lifted the empty coffin from its platform.

Underneath was a square section of marble that looked slightly newer than the surrounding floor.

One officer tapped it gently.

"Hollow."

Brooks crouched beside it.

A hidden metal ring had been disguised beneath the edge of the stone.

He pulled.

The slab lifted slowly.

Beneath it lay a narrow steel compartment.

Inside were three objects.

An old leather ledger.

A sealed envelope.

A velvet jewelry box.

Brooks carefully placed each item into evidence bags.

He looked toward his team.

"This is what they were willing to kill for."

Rosa's Ledger

Back at the forensic laboratory, the leather ledger was examined first.

Its pages contained handwritten names stretching back nearly twenty years.

Judges.

State prosecutors.

Police commanders.

Lobbyists.

Corporate executives.

State senators.

Beside many names were dates.

Dollar amounts.

Luxury gifts.

Vacation properties.

Campaign donations.

Brooks slowly turned another page.

There, written in elegant handwriting, was a title.

Special Family Assets

Below it appeared a list of names.

Emily Hart.

Victoria Hart.

Rosa Martinez.

Detective Daniel Brooks.

General Marcus Reynolds.

Every person investigating the Prescott family.

Each name carried a handwritten note.

Some read:

Discredit.

Others read:

Buy.

Several carried only one chilling word.

Remove.

Brooks closed the ledger.

"This wasn't just corruption."

"It was a playbook."

The Envelope

Victoria, Emily, Brooks, and Assistant District Attorney Laura Mitchell gathered inside a secure conference room.

Brooks carefully opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was a single legal document.

A postnuptial agreement.

Emily immediately recognized the signatures.

Her own.

Ethan's.

She stared at the paper in disbelief.

"I never signed this."

Laura adjusted her glasses.

"You did."

Emily looked horrified.

"What?"

Laura pointed to the signature.

"It matches your handwriting."

Emily shook her head repeatedly.

"No..."

"I've never seen this before."

Victoria looked at the date.

The document had supposedly been signed four months earlier.

The same week Emily had been treated for severe dizziness.

Dr. Rebecca Collins quietly entered the room.

She had been reviewing Emily's medical results.

She looked at the agreement.

Then at Emily.

"I think I know why."

Drugged Into Compliance

Dr. Collins placed another laboratory report on the table.

"The sedative found in Emily's blood wasn't simply an anti-anxiety medication."

Everyone looked up.

"It causes short-term memory impairment at repeated doses."

Emily's face turned pale.

"The tea..."

Dr. Collins nodded.

"If administered over weeks..."

"It becomes possible for someone to perform routine activities without forming clear long-term memories."

Emily whispered,

"They made me sign it."

Laura slowly nodded.

"And you likely don't remember doing it."

Emily began crying silently.

Victoria wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

Brooks looked at the agreement again.

"What does it say?"

Laura took a slow breath.

"If Emily remained married for three years..."

"Ethan would receive joint control over her inheritance."

"And if she became legally incompetent..."

"He would control everything immediately."

Silence filled the room.

The Real Fortune

Victoria looked toward the attorney.

"What inheritance?"

Laura opened another file.

"It came from Emily's father."

Emily looked confused.

"Dad?"

Laura nodded.

"Before he died, David Hart created a protected family trust."

Victoria stared in surprise.

"I knew about the education fund."

Laura smiled sadly.

"There was much more."

David Hart had quietly invested in several technology companies before they became global giants.

Over two decades, those investments had grown into one of the country's largest private family trusts.

Emily had never cared about the money.

She barely knew the details.

But the Prescott family had known everything.

Current estimated value:

More than 480 million dollars.

Emily looked stunned.

"I... had no idea."

Victoria slowly understood.

"It was never about love."

Laura shook her head.

"No."

"It was about control."

Ethan Breaks

That evening, Ethan Prescott sat alone inside an interview room at the district attorney's office.

Detective Brooks placed the postnuptial agreement on the table.

Then the toxicology report.

Then the ledger.

Finally...

A photograph of the empty coffin.

Ethan's confident smile disappeared.

Brooks leaned forward.

"Your family's secrets are falling apart."

Ethan stared at the evidence.

Without warning, he asked,

"My mother doesn't know I'm here, does she?"

Brooks remained silent.

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"Good."

He rubbed his face with trembling hands.

"You want to know the truth?"

Brooks nodded.

"I think..."

Ethan whispered.

"...I'm finally ready."

A Son's Confession

For nearly an hour, Ethan spoke.

He admitted Margaret had arranged the marriage after learning about Emily's trust.

He admitted she had ordered the surveillance.

The financial restrictions.

The isolation.

Even the guest house imprisonment.

"But I never wanted to kill her."

Brooks watched him carefully.

"Who did?"

Ethan lowered his head.

"My mother."

The room fell silent.

"When Emily asked for a divorce..."

Ethan continued,

"Mother said everything we'd worked for would disappear."

Brooks frowned.

"'Worked for'?"

Ethan gave a hollow laugh.

"You still don't understand."

He looked directly at Brooks.

"The Prescott fortune..."

He paused.

"...was already gone."

The Darkest Secret

Brooks felt a chill.

"What do you mean?"

Ethan closed his eyes.

"My grandfather built the empire."

"My father nearly destroyed it."

"Mother finished destroying what was left."

For years, Prescott Industries had secretly been drowning in debt.

Bad investments.

Fraudulent accounting.

Hidden loans.

The family had borrowed billions simply to maintain the illusion of wealth.

Without Emily's inheritance...

The company would collapse.

The Prescott name would become worthless.

Brooks slowly realized the horrifying truth.

Every lie.

Every threat.

Every beating.

Every attempt to silence Emily...

Had been committed because the family was bankrupt.

They hadn't been protecting their fortune.

They had been trying to steal someone else's.

Margaret's Final Conversation

Miles away, inside the Prescott mansion, Margaret sat alone in her study.

She poured herself a glass of whiskey.

For the first time in decades, her hands trembled.

Brandon entered quietly.

"Ethan's been arrested."

Margaret didn't respond.

"The board has suspended us."

Still silence.

Brandon finally asked,

"What do we do now?"

Margaret looked out the window toward the old chapel.

Her voice was almost a whisper.

"There is only one way left."

Brandon's expression darkened.

"You can't mean—"

She turned to him.

Cold.

Determined.

"If Emily reaches the witness stand..."

"...everything ends."

She opened a drawer and removed a satellite phone.

Only one number was stored inside.

She pressed Call.

The man who answered spoke only two words.

"I'm listening."

Margaret's reply was just as brief.

"Prepare Plan Black."

She ended the call without another word.

Across the city, Detective Brooks stepped out of the interrogation room after Ethan's confession.

His phone vibrated.

It was the FBI.

The agent on the line sounded urgent.

"Detective Brooks..."

"What is it?"

"We've been tracking that satellite phone for months."

Brooks froze.

"And?"

The agent answered quietly.

"It doesn't belong to a businessman."

May you like

"It belongs to a contract killing organization."
