Chapter 6: They Came After the Wrong Mother

Chapter 6: They Came After the Wrong Mother
The masked gunman raised his pistol.
Rain drummed against the twisted metal of the overturned police sedan.
Steam hissed from the crushed engine.
For one terrifying second, everything was still.
Thenâ
Bang!
The shot shattered the driver's side window.
Detective Daniel Brooks ducked instinctively as glass exploded across his shoulders.
The bullet missed him by inches.
The gunman fired again.
This time...
Colonel Victoria Hart moved.
A Soldier Never Stops Being a Soldier
Thirty years in the U.S. Army had taught Victoria one lesson above all others.
When innocent lives depended on you...
You moved before fear had time to catch up.
Ignoring the sharp pain in her shoulder, she kicked the damaged passenger door open with all her strength.
The twisted metal slammed into the gunman.
He staggered backward.
His pistol slipped from his hand and landed several feet away.
Before he could recover, Victoria lunged.
Her movements were precise.
Controlled.
Every technique had been practiced thousands of times.
She seized his wrist.
Twisted sharply.
A sickening crack echoed through the rain.
The gunman cried out.
The weapon fell into the mud.
Victoria swept his legs out from under him.
He crashed hard onto the wet pavement.
Within seconds, she had forced him face-first against the ground.
Brooks finally reached his service pistol.
"Police!"
"Don't move!"
The masked man struggled wildly.
Victoria pressed harder.
"You picked the wrong family."
The Second Vehicle
Suddenlyâ
Headlights appeared around the curve.
Another black SUV.
Brooks' expression changed instantly.
"Victoria!"
The second vehicle accelerated toward them.
Victoria looked up.
Two more masked men leaned out of the windows.
Automatic weapons.
"This wasn't one assassin," Brooks muttered.
"It was an execution team."
The attackers opened fire.
Bullets ripped through the wrecked police car.
Victoria pulled Rosa behind the engine block.
Brooks returned fire while calling for emergency backup.
"This is Detective Brooks!"
"Officer down!"
"Shots fired!"
"Route 17 near Miller Bridge!"
"We need tactical support immediately!"
Holding the Line
The exchange lasted less than two minutes.
It felt like an hour.
The attackers realized police reinforcements were already responding.
Sirens echoed faintly in the distance.
The second SUV swerved sharply and disappeared into the woods.
The first gunman tried one last time to escape.
Victoria tightened her grip.
"Stay down."
He reached inside his jacket.
Brooks reacted instantly.
"Gun!"
Victoria drove her elbow into the man's chest.
A small capsule rolled from his hand.
Brooks picked it up carefully.
"Cyanide."
Victoria looked at the prisoner.
"He planned to die before talking."
Brooks nodded grimly.
"Professionals."
The First Break
Minutes later, tactical officers secured the scene.
Paramedics examined Rosa.
The cut on her forehead required stitches, but she was alive.
Victoria's shoulder was badly bruised.
Brooks had suffered only minor injuries.
The masked gunman sat handcuffed inside an armored police vehicle.
Detective Brooks removed the man's mask.
No one recognized him.
No identification.
No fingerprints in any criminal database.
His face remained expressionless.
Brooks leaned forward.
"Who hired you?"
Silence.
"You nearly murdered a police officer."
Nothing.
Victoria stepped beside Brooks.
She looked directly into the man's eyes.
"You don't know Margaret Prescott."
The assassin blinked.
Barely.
Victoria noticed.
Brooks noticed too.
Victoria continued quietly.
"If we arrest you..."
"She'll erase you."
"If you escape..."
"She'll kill you."
Still silence.
Victoria took one step closer.
"But if you cooperate..."
"You're the only person in this entire conspiracy who might leave prison alive."
For the first time...
The assassin hesitated.
Hospital Security
Back at Mercy General Hospital, security had doubled.
Uniformed officers guarded every entrance.
Detectives occupied the hallway outside Emily's room.
No visitors entered without authorization.
Emily stared in horror as Brooks described the ambush.
"They tried to kill Rosa..."
Brooks nodded.
"And you."
Emily covered her mouth.
"They're getting desperate."
Victoria sat beside her daughter.
"No."
Emily looked up.
"They're getting careless."
A Mother's Guilt
Late that night, after Brooks left, Emily quietly asked,
"Mom..."
Victoria looked over.
"If I had never married Ethan..."
She couldn't finish the sentence.
Victoria already understood.
"This wouldn't have happened."
Victoria gently shook her head.
"No."
Emily's voice trembled.
"I brought all of this into your life."
Victoria smiled sadly.
"When you were six years old..."
Emily frowned.
"You climbed the oak tree in our backyard."
Emily managed a faint smile.
"I got stuck."
"You were terrified."
Victoria nodded.
"Do you remember what I told you?"
Emily thought for a moment.
Then whispered,
"You said mothers don't wait at the bottom."
Victoria squeezed her hand.
"I climbed up."
Emily nodded.
"You carried me down."
Victoria brushed away a tear from her daughter's cheek.
"I didn't carry you because climbing was your fault."
"I carried you because you're my daughter."
Emily finally broke down crying.
Victoria wrapped her arms around her.
"You will never apologize for needing me."
Another Attack
The following morning, an anonymous package arrived at Victoria's house.
The bomb squad was immediately called.
Inside the package...
There was no explosive.
Only a framed photograph.
It showed Victoria leaving Fort Liberty two days earlier.
Someone had been watching her before Emily's phone call.
Attached to the frame was a typed note.
RETIRE FROM THIS CASE.
NEXT TIME WE WON'T MISS.
Detective Brooks read the message twice.
"They've been following you."
Victoria nodded.
"For longer than we realized."
Military Pressure
That afternoon, Victoria was summoned to Fort Liberty.
General Marcus Reynolds was waiting in his office.
He closed the door behind her.
"Someone filed three formal complaints against you."
Victoria wasn't surprised.
"Conflict of interest."
"Abuse of military authority."
"Conduct unbecoming."
Victoria folded her hands behind her back.
"They're trying to force me off active duty."
The General sighed.
"I've already dismissed every complaint."
Victoria nodded gratefully.
"Thank you, sir."
General Reynolds smiled.
"They don't understand something."
"What?"
He leaned back in his chair.
"They think your uniform gives you strength."
Victoria remained silent.
"They're wrong."
He looked directly at her.
"Your strength was there long before you ever wore it."
Rosa Remembers
That evening, Rosa finally regained consciousness after surgery.
Victoria and Brooks sat beside her bed.
Rosa looked exhausted.
But alert.
She suddenly grabbed Victoria's wrist.
"The chapel..."
Victoria leaned closer.
"What about it?"
Rosa's breathing quickened.
"I remembered..."
Brooks opened his notebook.
"What did you remember?"
"There weren't just video recordings."
Victoria frowned.
"What else?"
Rosa closed her eyes.
"Margaret kept a second ledger."
Brooks' heart skipped.
"A ledger?"
Rosa nodded.
"Names."
"What names?"
"Judges."
"Politicians."
"Police officers."
"Business executives."
Everyone who had accepted favors from the Prescott family.
Everyone they had bought.
Everyone who had protected them.
Brooks looked at Victoria.
"If that ledger exists..."
Victoria finished the sentence.
"It could destroy the entire empire."
Rosa whispered one final sentence before drifting back to sleep.
"It's hidden..."
She struggled to breathe.
"...inside the chapel..."
"...beneath Daniel Prescott's coffin."
The room fell completely silent.
Brooks frowned.
"There is no Daniel Prescott."
Rosa slowly opened her eyes again.
"There is now."
Before anyone could ask another question, Brooks' phone rang.
He answered immediately.
His expression changed.
"What happened?"
The detective on the other end spoke rapidly.
Brooks slowly lowered the phone.
Victoria stood.
"What is it?"
Brooks looked directly at her.
"The Prescott family buried someone yesterday."
Victoria frowned.
"Who?"
Brooks swallowed.
"We don't know."
"There was a private funeral."
"No death certificate."
"No obituary."
"No public record."
He looked toward Rosa.
"And somehow..."
May you like
"...they buried a coffin that officially doesn't exist."
