CHAPTER 12 THE MAN BEHIND EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 12
THE MAN BEHIND EVERYTHING
The first thing Mariana noticed was not Elena's injuries.
Not the fear in her eyes.
Not the desperation in her voice.
It was something else.
Elena looked like a woman who had finally escaped from a nightmare.
But she also looked like someone who knew the nightmare was not over.
"He is coming."
The words remained in Mariana's mind.
Not Rodrigo.
Not directly.
She had expected Rodrigo.
She had prepared herself for him.
But Elena's expression suggested something worse.
Someone else.
Someone Rodrigo himself feared.
Daniel locked the door immediately.
Adrian moved closer to Elena.
"What happened?"
Elena looked at him.
A complicated expression crossed her face.
Anger.
Pain.
Regret.
"After thirty years..."
Her voice shook.
"You still don't know."
Adrian frowned.
"Know what?"
Elena looked at Mariana.
"The truth about who controlled Rodrigo."
Silence.
Mariana felt the room become colder.
"Someone controlled Rodrigo?"
Elena nodded.
"Rodrigo was never the person at the top."
For years, everyone believed Rodrigo Salcedo was the mastermind.
The architect.
The monster.
The man who created the empire.
But Elena explained something different.
Rodrigo was ambitious.
Cruel.
Dangerous.
But he was also a man who wanted approval.
Powerful people had used that weakness.
They gave him money.
Connections.
Protection.
In exchange, Rodrigo became their weapon.
"He didn't build the machine," Elena said.
"He became the machine."
Mariana looked at the files around her.
The corruption.
The hidden accounts.
The destroyed lives.
Everything was bigger than Rodrigo.
"Who?"
She asked.
Elena looked at Adrian.
Then Sofia.
Then finally Mariana.
"The person who created Project Helios."
Nobody spoke.
Because that name had appeared before.
A project.
A network.
A system.
But nobody knew who created it.
Elena reached into her coat.
She removed a small envelope.
"I stole this before I escaped."
Mariana opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
Four people.
Rodrigo.
A younger Elena.
A businessman Mariana did not recognize.
And...
A man standing behind them.
Older.
Powerful.
The same cold expression as Rodrigo.
Mariana stared.
"Who is he?"
Elena whispered:
"Victor Salcedo."
Daniel immediately reacted.
"Impossible."
Mariana looked at him.
"You know him?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Everyone in the old financial world knew the name."
"Who was he?"
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"Rodrigo's father."
The room became silent.
"His father?"
Daniel nodded.
"Victor Salcedo created the original Salcedo network decades before Rodrigo."
Adrian looked shocked.
"I thought he retired."
Elena laughed bitterly.
"That's what everyone thought."
Victor Salcedo was different from Rodrigo.
Rodrigo wanted attention.
Victor wanted control.
Rodrigo built skyscrapers.
Victor built invisible systems.
He believed the most powerful person was not the person everyone saw.
It was the person nobody knew existed.
Banks.
Governments.
Corporations.
Information.
Everything connected.
And Rodrigo...
Was his student.
"Why didn't we know about him?"
Mariana asked.
Elena answered:
"Because Victor taught Rodrigo the most important lesson."
"What lesson?"
"People cannot fight what they cannot see."
Mariana looked at the photograph again.
"Is he alive?"
Nobody answered.
That was answer enough.
The next morning, a message appeared on every screen connected to the cloud.
Not an email.
Not a text.
A video.
The entire group watched.
An elderly man appeared.
Calm.
Elegant.
Perfectly dressed.
He looked directly into the camera.
"Hello, Mariana."
Everyone froze.
Because he knew her name.
"I have been waiting a long time to meet you."
Mariana stepped closer.
The man smiled.
"I imagine you have many questions."
She said nothing.
"I am Victor Salcedo."
The video continued.
"I know what Rodrigo did."
A pause.
"I know what Elena did."
Another pause.
"And I know what Sofia and Adrian did."
Mariana's eyes narrowed.
"Everyone has secrets."
Victor smiled.
"But the difference between winners and losers..."
He leaned closer.
"Is who controls when those secrets are revealed."
He revealed something shocking.
The cloud backup.
The yacht recordings.
The hidden folders.
The messages.
All of it.
Victor knew.
Not because he hacked the system.
Because he designed it.
Mariana felt sick.
"The cloud..."
Victor nodded.
"Was created as an insurance policy."
"Against Rodrigo?"
"No."
He smiled.
"Against everyone."
The purpose of the cloud was not only to protect evidence.
It was designed to preserve leverage.
Every secret.
Every mistake.
Every betrayal.
Stored forever.
Victor had created a weapon disguised as protection.
And Rodrigo had inherited it.
"Why show me this?"
Mariana asked.
Victor's expression changed slightly.
"Because you have reached the final stage."
"What stage?"
"The moment where you choose."
Mariana frowned.
"Choose what?"
Victor smiled.
"Whether you want justice..."
A pause.
"Or power."
Nobody spoke.
Victor continued.
"Rodrigo stole from me."
Mariana was surprised.
"You hate him?"
Victor laughed.
"No."
A cold smile.
"I created him."
The video ended.
The room remained silent.
Then Adrian spoke.
"He wants something."
Mariana nodded.
"Of course."
She looked at the screen.
"Everyone does."
Hours later, Rodrigo appeared.
Not on television.
Not in public.
He came directly to them.
Alone.
No guards.
No lawyers.
That frightened Mariana more than anything.
Because Rodrigo Salcedo never appeared without protection.
"You found him."
Mariana stared.
"Victor."
Rodrigo's expression changed.
A rare moment of honesty.
Fear.
"You don't understand what you are dealing with."
Mariana stepped closer.
"I thought that was you."
Rodrigo looked at her.
For a moment, she saw something unexpected.
Not arrogance.
Regret.
"I wanted you away from this."
She almost laughed.
"You tried to kill me."
"I tried to save you."
The words angered her.
"From what?"
Rodrigo looked at her.
"From becoming exactly what he wants."
Mariana froze.
"What does he want?"
Rodrigo looked toward the hidden files.
Then back at her.
"He wants you to take my place."
Silence.
"Your inheritance."
"Your intelligence."
"Your anger."
Rodrigo whispered:
"He doesn't want to destroy the Salcedo empire."
A pause.
"He wants to give it to you."
Mariana felt the room spin.
Everything she had fought for.
Every secret.
Every sacrifice.
Every loss.
Suddenly became a question.
Was she destroying Rodrigo...
Or becoming the next Rodrigo?
That night, Mariana opened one final file.
A file Victor had unlocked.
Name:
THE SUCCESSOR
Inside was a photograph.
Not Rodrigo.
Not Adrian.
Not Sofia.
Her.
Mariana.
As a child.
With a handwritten note underneath.
The perfect heir.
Mariana stared at the words.
Then she noticed another line.
Written underneath.
By Rodrigo.
I failed to save her from him.
For the first time...
Mariana wondered if Rodrigo had been telling the truth about one thing.
Maybe he wasn't afraid of losing his empire.
Maybe he was afraid of what would happen when Mariana inherited it.
Because the greatest danger was no longer Rodrigo Salcedo.
Or Victor Salcedo.
The greatest danger...
May you like
Was what Mariana would become.
