CHAPTER 5 THE MOTHER THEY ERASED

CHAPTER 5

THE MOTHER THEY ERASED

For thirty years, Sofia Alvarez had lived like a ghost.

No identity.

No family.

No home that truly belonged to her.

She changed cities every few years.

Changed names.

Changed appearances.

She learned not to look over her shoulder too often because fear itself could become a habit.

But there was one thing she never changed.

One thing she never abandoned.

A photograph.

A tiny photograph of a baby girl wrapped in a white blanket.

Her daughter.

Mariana.

The child Rodrigo Salcedo had taken from her.

The child she had spent every day trying to find.

And now...

After thirty years...

Mariana had found her.

Sofia stood frozen in the middle of the apartment.

The man standing in front of her looked impossible.

A person from the past.

A person who should not exist.

"You can't be here."

The man's smile faded slightly.

"That's exactly what Rodrigo wanted everyone to believe."

Sofia's hands began trembling.

"Adrian..."

The name escaped her lips.

The man looked at her.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably him.

Adrian Vale.

The man the world believed had died thirty years ago.

The man whose death started the chain of lies.

The man whose daughter Mariana had spent her entire life believing was a stranger.

"You survived."

Sofia whispered.

"So did you."

Adrian looked around the apartment.

"After everything Rodrigo did, we both learned the same lesson."

"What?"

"Dead people are easier to control."

Meanwhile, Mariana was still watching the old recording.

Sofia's face remained frozen on the screen.

Her biological mother.

The woman she spent her entire life believing abandoned her.

But now she knew.

The truth was much crueler.

Sofia didn't leave.

She was forced away.

Mariana closed the laptop.

She felt anger.

Pain.

Confusion.

Everything she thought she knew was collapsing.

Daniel watched her silently.

"You should meet her."

Mariana looked at him.

"Where is she?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Mariana..."

"What?"

"Are you ready?"

She laughed quietly.

"Ready?"

She looked at him.

"My father tried to kill me. My mother lied to me for twenty-five years. I discovered I have another mother who was erased from history."

Her eyes hardened.

"I stopped being ready a long time ago."

Sofia waited in an old church outside the city.

It was the only place she felt safe.

A place without cameras.

Without technology.

Without the reach of the Salcedos.

When Mariana entered, Sofia immediately recognized her.

Not because of the photograph.

Not because of the years of memories.

Because of the eyes.

A mother always knows.

For several seconds, neither woman moved.

Thirty years.

Thirty years of questions.

Thirty years of pain.

Thirty years of missing moments.

Then Sofia whispered:

"Mariana."

Hearing her name from Sofia's mouth broke something inside her.

Mariana wanted to run toward her.

She wanted to cry.

She wanted to finally feel the embrace she had been missing her entire life.

But another emotion stopped her.

Anger.

"You knew where I was."

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

"No."

"You knew I was alive."

"No."

"Then why didn't you find me?"

The question was not loud.

It was worse.

It was quiet.

A question from a child who had waited too long.

Sofia looked down.

"Because every time I got close..."

Her voice broke.

"Someone disappeared."

Mariana said nothing.

Sofia continued.

"I found your school once."

Mariana froze.

"I watched you from across the street."

A tear fell down Sofia's face.

"You were laughing with your friends."

Mariana felt her chest tighten.

"I wanted to run to you."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because Rodrigo's men were watching you."

Silence.

"They told me if I approached you, you would disappear."

Mariana looked away.

"He threatened me?"

Sofia nodded.

"He told me he had already taken you once."

Her voice became a whisper.

"He said taking you again would be easier."

Sofia reached into her bag.

She removed a small box.

Inside was a bracelet.

A simple bracelet.

White beads.

A tiny silver star.

Mariana recognized it immediately.

She had seen it before.

In her childhood photos.

"You had this when you were born."

Sofia smiled sadly.

"I made it for you."

Mariana touched it.

Her fingers trembled.

"I remember this."

Sofia looked surprised.

"You do?"

"Maybe."

Mariana frowned.

"There was a song."

Sofia froze.

"What song?"

Mariana closed her eyes.

A memory appeared.

A woman's voice.

Soft.

Warm.

Singing in the darkness.

A song she thought she invented.

But she hadn't.

It was Sofia.

Her mother.

"You remembered."

Sofia covered her mouth.

For the first time, Mariana saw something she never saw from Elena.

A mother's pain.

But before they could say more, Daniel entered.

His face was serious.

"We have a problem."

Mariana turned.

"What happened?"

He showed them his phone.

The news.

Another Salcedo announcement.

This time from Elena.

ELENA SALCEDO SPEAKS: "MY DAUGHTER IS BEING MANIPULATED BY DANGEROUS PEOPLE."

Mariana's expression changed.

"They found out."

Daniel nodded.

"But that's not the worst part."

"What?"

He showed another message.

A leaked document.

A psychological evaluation.

With Mariana's name.

Created years ago.

The document claimed she had:

  • unstable behavior

  • emotional disorders

  • violent tendencies

Mariana stared.

"I never saw this."

"Because it never existed."

Daniel looked at the document.

"Rodrigo created it."

Sofia became pale.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

Sofia whispered:

"He did this before."

Mariana turned.

"What do you mean?"

Sofia looked at her daughter.

"Rodrigo didn't just erase me."

A pause.

"He erased anyone who got close to the truth."

The room became silent.

"Who else?"

Mariana asked.

Sofia looked away.

"Adrian."

Mariana turned toward the man she thought was dead.

"He survived."

Sofia nodded.

"But not without losing everything."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Rodrigo didn't kill me."

His voice was cold.

"He destroyed me."

Mariana looked at him.

"Why?"

Adrian looked directly at her.

"Because I found out why Rodrigo really took you."

A pause.

"Not because of Sofia."

"Not because of money."

"Because of your blood."

Mariana felt a chill.

"My blood?"

Adrian nodded.

"Your existence connects to the biggest secret Rodrigo ever buried."

"What secret?"

Adrian looked at Sofia.

Then back at Mariana.

"The Salcedo empire was never built by Rodrigo."

A silence.

"It was built on stolen identity."

That night, Mariana returned to the cloud.

The hidden files had changed.

A new folder appeared.

Someone had unlocked it remotely.

Name:

THE FIRST BETRAYAL

Inside was one document.

A legal agreement.

Signed thirty years ago.

The names shocked her.

Rodrigo Salcedo.

Elena Salcedo.

Adrian Vale.

Sofia Alvarez.

And another name.

A name Mariana had never heard.

But the signature at the bottom made her blood run cold.

Because it was connected to her.

MARIANA ALVAREZ VALE.

Her real name.

Not Salcedo.

Not Rodrigo's daughter.

Not the heir of the family empire.

She was something else.

Something they had spent thirty years hiding.

Across the city, Rodrigo stood in his office.

He watched Mariana open the file.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

Because Mariana had reached the beginning.

And the beginning was where his empire would end.

He whispered:

"She knows."

Elena stood behind him.

"What do we do?"

Rodrigo looked at the screen.

At his daughter.

The child he stole.

The woman he failed to kill.

"The same thing we did thirty years ago."

Elena swallowed.

"Remove the evidence?"

Rodrigo shook his head.

"No."

A cold smile appeared.

May you like

"We remove the people who carry it."
