CHAPTER 12 — THE MAN SERENA FEARED

CHAPTER 12 — THE MAN SERENA FEARED

The mansion went dark.

Not the ordinary darkness of a power failure.

This was different.

Every light died at exactly the same moment.

Every screen.

Every camera.

Every emergency lamp.

Even the red indicators on the security panels disappeared.

For three seconds, there was nothing.

Then the speakers came alive.

ELIMINATION PROTOCOL INITIATED.

Ethan screamed.

"Daddy!"

Victor pulled him close.

"I'm here."

Another mechanical voice followed.

PRIMARY TARGET: VICTOR HALE.

SECONDARY TARGET: ETHAN HALE.

Victor's blood ran cold.

"They've marked both of us."

Across the room, Edward shouted:

"Everyone get down!"

Gunfire erupted.

Muzzle flashes briefly illuminated the darkness.

Victor dropped Ethan behind a stone pillar.

"Stay here!"

"No!"

"Don't move!"

Victor fired toward the attackers.

One fell.

Another disappeared behind the staircase.

Then a figure stepped into the emergency glow.

Michael Hale.

He wasn't running.

He wasn't hiding.

He was simply walking.

Slowly.

Calmly.

As though the armed men surrounding him were nothing more than furniture.

A soldier raised his weapon.

Michael looked at him.

"Put it down."

The soldier froze.

His hands began trembling.

Then, unbelievably, he lowered the gun.

Victor stared.

"What did you do?"

Michael smiled.

"Nothing."

The soldier suddenly turned his weapon toward himself.

Victor shouted:

"Stop!"

Michael snapped his fingers.

The soldier dropped the weapon instead.

Silence.

Victor stared at Michael.

"You control them."

Michael shook his head.

"No."

"They control themselves."

"Because they know what happens when they disobey."

Victor looked at Edward.

His father looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

Victor understood.

"You know him."

Edward whispered:

"Yes."

"Who is he?"

Michael answered for him.

"I'm your uncle."

Victor tightened his grip around Ethan.

"You're Michael."

"Yes."

"The man who supposedly died."

"Yes."

"The man behind the Trust."

Michael smiled.

"Not behind it."

He pointed toward the symbol on the wall.

"I am the Trust."

Serena suddenly appeared at the end of the corridor.

Her face was pale.

She saw Michael.

And stopped breathing.

"No."

Michael turned.

"Hello, Serena."

She immediately stepped backward.

"No."

Victor noticed.

For the first time since meeting her, Serena looked genuinely afraid.

Not pretending.

Not manipulating.

Terrified.

Victor turned toward her.

"You know him."

Serena shook her head.

"Victor, we need to leave."

"Answer me."

"He can't be here."

"Why?"

"Because he's supposed to be dead."

Michael laughed.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Serena's voice broke.

"You promised."

Michael took one step toward her.

Serena stepped back.

"You promised you'd never come back."

"I changed my mind."

"Why?"

Michael's expression became cold.

"Because you failed."

Serena shook her head.

"I did everything."

"You were given one task."

"Victor was supposed to remain conditioned."

"And Ethan?"

Michael looked toward the boy.

"He was supposed to be delivered."

Serena swallowed.

"I tried."

"You betrayed me."

"No."

Michael continued walking.

"You developed feelings."

Serena's eyes filled with tears.

"For Ethan?"

"For Victor."

Victor froze.

Serena looked at him.

Michael smiled.

"She was supposed to destroy you."

"Instead, she fell in love with you."

Victor stared at Serena.

"Is that true?"

Serena couldn't answer.

Michael did.

"She loved you."

"She hated herself for it."

"She hated Evelyn for it."

"And most of all..."

Michael stopped in front of Serena.

"...she hated Ethan because he made it impossible for her to have you."

Serena whispered:

"That's not true."

Michael slapped her.

She fell.

Victor moved forward.

"Don't touch her."

Michael looked at him.

"You still protect her."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"I don't protect her."

"You protect everyone."

Michael smiled.

"That's your weakness."

Victor raised his gun.

Michael didn't move.

"You think a weapon will stop me?"

"No."

Victor's finger tightened around the trigger.

"But it might make you listen."

Michael laughed.

"You're more like your mother than you realize."

Serena slowly stood.

Blood touched the corner of her mouth.

She looked at Victor.

"Listen to me."

Victor didn't respond.

"Everything I did..."

She swallowed.

"...I did because he threatened me."

Michael laughed.

"That's your favorite lie."

Serena turned.

"You threatened my brother."

Michael's expression changed.

Victor noticed.

"Brother?"

Serena looked at him.

"I had a brother."

"What happened?"

Michael answered:

"He died."

Serena glared at him.

"You killed him."

Michael smiled.

"He was weak."

"He was innocent."

"He was inconvenient."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"What was his name?"

Serena whispered:

"Daniel."

Victor froze.

He remembered the name.

A childhood photograph.

A boy standing beside Serena.

He had always thought it was a cousin.

"Daniel."

Serena nodded.

"My brother."

Michael looked toward Victor.

"Daniel was the first person who tried to expose me."

"What happened?"

"He failed."

Serena's voice trembled.

"I watched him die."

Michael stepped closer.

"And then I gave Serena a choice."

Victor looked at her.

"What choice?"

"Serve me."

"Or lose everyone else."

Victor's expression changed.

"That's why you became part of the Trust."

Serena nodded.

"I had no choice."

Michael smiled.

"Everyone has a choice."

Victor looked at him.

"You enjoy this."

Michael's smile disappeared.

"No."

"I believe in this."

"In what?"

"Order."

"People are chaos."

"Love is chaos."

"Loyalty is chaos."

"Family is chaos."

Michael looked around the mansion.

"I built the Trust to eliminate chaos."

Victor said:

"You destroyed families."

Michael answered:

"I perfected them."

Suddenly, a loud alarm sounded.

The symbol on the wall changed.

MEMORY CORE UNSTABLE.

Michael's expression changed.

"Move."

Everyone looked at him.

"Why?"

"The chamber is collapsing."

Edward immediately ran toward the stairs.

"Then we have to shut it down."

Michael grabbed his arm.

"No."

Edward stared.

"What are you doing?"

Michael looked at Victor.

"The chamber must complete its transfer."

"Transfer what?"

"The Trust."

"To whom?"

Michael smiled.

"To Victor."

Victor stepped backward.

"No."

Michael's expression hardened.

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

"If you reject it, the system will destroy itself."

"Then let it."

Michael shook his head.

"It won't."

"What will happen?"

"Ethan will die."

Victor froze.

Michael continued.

"The Trust was designed with one final protection."

"If the primary heir rejects the inheritance..."

He pointed toward Ethan.

"...the secondary heir becomes the sacrifice."

Victor's face went white.

"No."

Ethan clung to him.

"Daddy?"

Victor looked down.

"It's okay."

Michael said:

"It isn't."

Victor looked at him.

"You expect me to believe you?"

"I don't need you to believe me."

Michael pointed toward the machine.

"I need you to watch."

The machine activated.

A red light appeared above Ethan.

SECONDARY HEIR IDENTIFIED.

Victor's heart stopped.

"Ethan."

The boy began crying.

"Daddy, what's happening?"

Victor turned toward Edward.

"How do I stop it?"

Edward shook his head.

"You can't."

Victor looked at Michael.

"You designed this."

"Yes."

"Then you can stop it."

Michael shook his head.

"Only Victor can."

"How?"

"Accept the Trust."

Victor looked at Ethan.

Then the machine.

Then Michael.

"You planned this."

Michael smiled.

"Of course."

Evelyn suddenly stepped forward.

"He's lying."

Everyone turned.

Michael looked at her.

"Still alive."

"Still troublesome."

Evelyn raised her weapon.

"You forgot one thing."

"What?"

"The Trust doesn't recognize Victor."

Michael frowned.

"What?"

"It recognizes memory."

Michael's expression changed.

Evelyn looked at Victor.

"Remember the second key."

Victor touched the black key.

"What about it?"

"Use it."

Victor stared.

"I don't know how."

"You do."

"I don't."

"You've done it before."

Victor closed his eyes.

A memory surfaced.

A little boy.

A black key.

His mother kneeling before him.

Her voice:

If they ever come for you, press the key against your heart.

Victor opened his eyes.

He placed the key against his chest.

Nothing happened.

Michael laughed.

"Too late."

Then—

the key began to glow.

Michael's smile disappeared.

"No."

Victor looked down.

The black key dissolved into light.

A symbol appeared on his palm.

The Trust reacted.

Every machine in the chamber screamed.

MEMORY AUTHENTICATION ACCEPTED.

Michael stepped backward.

"No."

Victor stared at him.

"What did you do?"

Michael looked terrified.

"Your mother didn't create the Trust."

Victor frowned.

"Then who did?"

Michael whispered:

"Your grandmother."

Silence.

Victor stared.

"She?"

"Yes."

"And you?"

"I inherited it."

"Then why are you afraid?"

Michael's eyes moved toward Ethan.

"Because the Trust has rejected me."

Victor looked at the symbol.

"Why?"

"Because you are the true heir."

Michael's face twisted.

"Your grandmother designed the Trust to protect one person."

"Who?"

Michael whispered:

"Her youngest child."

Victor looked at Edward.

His father lowered his head.

Victor's voice became quiet.

"Edward."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

Victor's eyes widened.

"Then why did you control him?"

"Because Edward refused."

Victor turned toward his father.

"You were the true heir?"

Edward looked at him.

"I never wanted it."

Michael laughed.

"He was too weak."

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Becoming you."

Michael's expression darkened.

Victor understood.

"This entire war..."

"...was between brothers."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

"And I was the weapon."

"Yes."

"Ethan was the insurance."

"Yes."

Victor looked at his son.

Then at Michael.

"You lose."

Michael smiled.

"Not yet."

He pressed a button on his wrist.

The floor beneath Ethan opened.

Victor screamed.

"Ethan!"

The boy disappeared.

Victor dove forward.

Too late.

The floor slammed shut.

"DADDY!"

Victor pounded the metal.

"Ethan!"

Michael stood above him.

"You should have accepted the Trust when I gave you the choice."

Victor turned slowly.

His face had changed.

No fear.

Only rage.

"You made one mistake."

Michael smiled.

"What?"

"You thought my son was alone."

A voice came from behind Michael.

"He's not."

Michael turned.

Serena stood there.

Holding a gun.

Michael froze.

Serena's hand trembled.

But she didn't lower it.

"Let him go."

Michael laughed.

"You?"

Serena raised the weapon.

"I said let him go."

"You'll shoot me?"

"If I have to."

Michael smiled.

"You won't."

Serena's eyes filled with tears.

"You don't know me anymore."

Michael's smile faded.

"No."

Serena whispered:

"That's the problem."

She fired.

The bullet struck Michael in the shoulder.

He staggered.

Victor looked at Serena.

She met his eyes.

"I owe your son a debt."

Michael raised his weapon.

Serena fired again.

He disappeared into the smoke.

Victor ran toward the mechanism.

"Open it!"

Serena rushed beside him.

"I don't know how."

Victor looked at the symbol on his hand.

The Trust responded.

A hidden message appeared:

SECONDARY HEIR LOCATION: BELOW.

Then:

ACCESS REQUIRES SACRIFICE.

Victor's heart stopped.

"What sacrifice?"

The answer appeared.

ONE MEMORY.

Victor stared.

"Which memory?"

The system displayed:

THE MEMORY OF EVELYN.

Victor froze.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"No."

Victor looked at her.

"What happens if I give it up?"

"You'll forget me."

"Forever?"

"Yes."

Victor looked toward Ethan's location.

Then back at Evelyn.

She smiled through her tears.

"Save your son."

Victor closed his eyes.

He remembered her smile.

Her voice.

Their first meeting.

Her hand in his.

The night Ethan was born.

Every moment.

Then he whispered:

"Take it."

The symbol flashed.

Evelyn disappeared from his memory.

Victor opened his eyes.

He looked at the woman standing in front of him.

He knew she was important.

But he couldn't remember why.

She began crying.

Victor frowned.

"Why are you crying?"

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"Because you forgot me."

Victor looked away.

Then the floor opened.

Ethan was inside.

Alive.

Victor pulled him into his arms.

"Daddy!"

"I'm here."

Ethan hugged him tightly.

Victor closed his eyes.

For the first time, he felt relief.

Then a slow clap echoed through the room.

Michael stepped out of the smoke.

Blood covered his shirt.

But he was smiling.

"You made the sacrifice."

Victor turned.

Michael lifted a small device.

"Excellent."

Victor's expression hardened.

"What?"

Michael pressed the button.

The mansion shook.

Ethan screamed.

A hidden countdown appeared.

TRUST SELF-DESTRUCT: 05:00

Victor stared.

Michael smiled.

"You saved your son."

"But now..."

He pointed toward Victor.

"...you have five minutes to save yourself."

Then Michael disappeared into the darkness.

Victor looked at the countdown.

04:59
