CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUST

CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUST
The darkness lasted three seconds.
But to Victor, it felt like an eternity.
Then the emergency lights returned.
Red.
Flickering.
Unsteady.
Victor's first thought was Ethan.
He turned.
His son was still beside him.
Alive.
Terrified.
Victor pulled him into his arms.
"I'm here."
"Daddy..."
"I'm here."
Ethan buried his face against Victor's chest.
But Victor wasn't looking at Ethan anymore.
He was staring at the woman standing across the room.
Clara.
Her gun was still raised.
Elena was on the floor.
And the old tape recorder lay between them.
The voice that had spoken from the darkness was gone.
Victor's breathing was uneven.
"You said she wasn't Evelyn."
Clara nodded.
"I did."
"Then who was she?"
"I don't know."
Victor stared at her.
"You just told me she wasn't my wife."
"Because she wasn't."
"Then why did she sound like Evelyn?"
Clara's expression hardened.
"Because whoever is behind this has spent eighteen years studying her."
Victor looked toward the ceiling.
The speakers were silent.
"That voice knew things only Evelyn could know."
Clara lowered the gun slightly.
"That's exactly what they wanted you to believe."
Victor looked at Elena.
"You said my mother ordered Evelyn's death."
Elena shook her head.
"I never said that."
"Clara did."
"I know."
"Then who's lying?"
Clara stepped forward.
"Both of us could be."
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Clara pointed at the tape recorder.
"That's the problem."
She picked it up.
"Everything you've heard tonight was designed to make you choose."
"Choose what?"
"A person."
"Between whom?"
"Between everyone you love."
Victor stared at her.
Clara continued.
"Your father."
"Your mother."
"Serena."
"Daniel."
"Evelyn."
"Me."
She looked at Ethan.
"And eventually, your son."
Victor's face hardened.
"Ethan has nothing to do with this."
"That's what you believe."
"He is six years old."
"And he's the reason the Trust exists."
Victor went still.
"The Trust."
Clara nodded.
"The Trust."
They left Room 18 through a narrow passage.
The facility was still shaking.
Somewhere above them, alarms screamed.
Victor carried Ethan.
Elena followed.
Clara walked ahead.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Victor broke the silence.
"What is the Trust?"
Clara stopped.
She turned.
"The Hale Trust isn't a bank account."
"I know."
"No, Victor."
She shook her head.
"You don't."
"The Trust isn't money."
"Then what is it?"
Clara looked toward Ethan.
"It is control."
Victor frowned.
"Control over what?"
"The company."
"I already own the company."
"No."
Clara's voice was quiet.
"You own the company because the Trust allows you to."
Victor stopped.
"What does that mean?"
"Your shares aren't yours."
"My name is on every document."
"Your name is on every document because your name was put there."
Victor stared.
"By whom?"
"Your father."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"My father died."
Clara ignored him.
"Twenty-five years ago, a legal structure was created."
"The Trust."
"It contained every controlling share of Hale Global."
"Not just shares."
"Property."
"Accounts."
"Private companies."
"Foreign holdings."
"Political connections."
"Security contracts."
"Everything."
Victor's expression darkened.
"And the beneficiary?"
Clara looked at Ethan.
"Your son."
Victor shook his head.
"That can't be."
"It can."
"Why Ethan?"
"Because the original beneficiary died."
"Who?"
Clara hesitated.
Then:
"Clara."
Victor stared.
"You."
She nodded.
"The original Trust was created for me."
Victor's eyes widened.
"Then why did it transfer to Ethan?"
"Because I disappeared."
"Twenty-three years ago."
"Yes."
Victor looked at Elena.
"She hid you."
Elena nodded.
"To keep your father from using you."
Victor looked back at Clara.
"So why didn't the Trust transfer to me?"
"Because you're not the legal heir."
Victor frowned.
"Then who am I?"
Clara looked at him.
"You're the guardian."
Victor's face went pale.
"The Trust never belonged to you."
"It was your responsibility to protect the person who inherited it."
Victor looked at Ethan.
"That's why they want him."
"Yes."
"That's why Serena tried to take him."
"Yes."
"That's why Evelyn died."
Clara's eyes hardened.
"Yes."
Victor's arms tightened around Ethan.
"Then why didn't Evelyn tell me?"
Clara looked away.
"She tried."
"She left recordings."
"Yes."
"She told me to protect myself."
"Because she knew you wouldn't believe the rest."
Victor stared.
"What rest?"
Clara hesitated.
"That you were never meant to be Ethan's father."
Victor's expression changed.
"What?"
Clara immediately added:
"Not in the way you're thinking."
Victor looked confused.
"Ethan is your son."
"Biologically."
"Legally."
"But the Trust was designed to make you his guardian."
Victor stared at her.
"Why?"
"Because your father knew that if the Trust passed directly to Ethan, someone would try to control him."
"So he used me."
"Yes."
"And Evelyn?"
"She was the only person who knew the full arrangement."
Victor's voice became bitter.
"Then why was she killed?"
Clara looked at him.
"Because she tried to break it."
They reached a steel door.
Clara entered a code.
The door opened.
Inside was a room unlike the others.
No medical equipment.
No cameras.
No beds.
Just shelves.
Hundreds of legal files.
Victor stared.
"These are Trust documents."
Clara nodded.
"Everything you need is here."
Victor stepped inside.
A file sat on the central table.
His name was printed across it.
VICTOR HALE — GUARDIAN AGREEMENT.
He opened it.
The first page contained a photograph.
Victor.
Evelyn.
Ethan.
A handwritten note beneath it:
The guardian must never know the full truth.
Victor's hands began shaking.
He turned the page.
Another document.
A signature.
His.
Victor stared.
"I never signed this."
Clara walked closer.
"You did."
"No."
"You signed it six months after Ethan was born."
"I would remember."
"You don't."
Victor looked at her.
"Why?"
Clara's expression was grim.
"Because that was the first time they erased your memory."
Victor slowly sat down.
"Who?"
"Your father."
Victor looked at Elena.
"Was she involved?"
Elena closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Victor stood.
"You knew?"
"I knew about the Trust."
"You knew they were manipulating me."
"Yes."
"And you did nothing."
"I tried."
"When?"
"Every time I tried to get you away, your father threatened Ethan."
Victor froze.
"Ethan?"
"He threatened to make your son disappear."
Victor looked down at Ethan.
The boy was sitting quietly on the floor.
Clutching his stuffed rabbit.
Victor's expression softened.
"How long have you known?"
Elena whispered:
"Since before he was born."
A telephone rang.
Everyone froze.
The phone sat on the table.
Victor looked at Clara.
"Don't answer."
Clara shook her head.
"If we don't, they'll know we're here."
Victor picked up the receiver.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then:
"Victor."
That voice.
Again.
Evelyn.
Victor's face hardened.
"Who are you?"
A soft laugh.
"You still don't recognize me."
"Where is my wife?"
"You keep asking about Evelyn."
"Because you sound like her."
"That's because I knew her."
"Who are you?"
"Someone who loved her."
Victor's hand tightened around the receiver.
"Then tell me who killed her."
The voice paused.
"You did."
Victor closed his eyes.
"Stop saying that."
"You were there."
"I didn't kill her."
"You held her hand."
Victor's breathing changed.
"You heard her last words."
"I don't remember."
"Exactly."
The voice became colder.
"They erased the memory."
"Who?"
"Your father."
Victor opened his eyes.
"He's alive."
"Yes."
"Where?"
A pause.
"Inside the Trust."
Victor frowned.
"That's impossible."
"No."
The voice whispered:
"He owns it."
Victor looked at the documents.
"How?"
"Because the Trust has a secret beneficiary."
Victor's blood ran cold.
"Who?"
The line went dead.
Victor slowly lowered the receiver.
Clara stared at him.
"What did she say?"
Victor looked at the file.
"She said my father owns the Trust."
Clara's face changed.
"No."
"What?"
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"Because the Trust has no secret beneficiary."
Victor looked at the documents.
"Then someone changed it."
Clara rushed toward the table.
She opened another file.
"Here."
Victor looked.
A page had been inserted.
The paper was old.
The signature was unmistakable.
EDWARD HALE.
Victor's father.
The clause read:
Upon the death or incapacity of the guardian, control shall transfer to the secondary beneficiary.
Victor's eyes moved lower.
The secondary beneficiary's name had been blacked out.
He stared.
"Who is it?"
Clara shook her head.
"Someone removed the name."
Victor looked at the date.
"Six months ago."
Clara froze.
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"Because six months ago, nobody had access to this room."
Victor looked at her.
"Someone did."
A sound came from behind them.
A soft click.
The door locked.
Everyone turned.
The lights went out.
Again.
Victor pulled Ethan close.
"Stay with me."
A voice came through the speakers.
This time—
it was not Evelyn.
It was a man.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
Victor stopped breathing.
"Hello, Victor."
He knew that voice.
He had heard it in childhood memories.
He had heard it in nightmares.
His father's voice.
"Father?"
The voice laughed.
"At last."
Victor stared at the ceiling.
"Where are you?"
"Closer than you think."
"Show yourself."
"Not yet."
Victor's voice became cold.
"Why did you kill Evelyn?"
Silence.
Then:
"Because she betrayed me."
"She tried to protect Ethan."
"No."
"She tried to destroy the Trust."
Victor looked at Clara.
"Why?"
"Because she discovered the truth."
"What truth?"
His father's voice became quieter.
"That the Trust was never designed to protect Ethan."
Victor froze.
"Then what was it designed for?"
"To protect you."
Victor frowned.
"From what?"
"From yourself."
Victor's stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
The voice laughed.
"You've been searching for a murderer."
"But you should have been searching for a memory."
Victor's head began to ache.
Images flashed.
A hospital room.
Evelyn.
A syringe.
A man standing behind him.
A child crying.
A locked door.
Then—
a woman in a photograph.
Victor grabbed his head.
"Daddy!"
Ethan cried out.
Victor dropped to his knees.
The memory became clearer.
He was standing in the hospital corridor.
Eighteen years earlier.
He was holding a photograph.
A woman stood beside him.
Not Evelyn.
Not Elena.
Someone else.
A young woman with dark hair.
Victor stared at her face.
He knew her.
He had seen her before.
In the family photograph.
But she wasn't Clara.
She wasn't Serena.
She wasn't Elena.
Who was she?
The memory shifted.
The woman leaned toward Victor.
She whispered:
"Don't trust the Trust."
Then the memory vanished.
Victor gasped.
Clara grabbed his shoulder.
"What did you see?"
Victor looked at her.
"The woman."
"What woman?"
"The woman in the photograph."
Clara's expression changed.
"Which photograph?"
"The family photograph."
Clara went pale.
"Victor..."
"What?"
"That woman shouldn't exist."
Victor stared.
"Why?"
"Because she died before you were born."
Victor's blood ran cold.
"Who was she?"
Clara whispered:
"Your father's first wife."
Victor stared at her.
"My mother?"
"No."
Clara shook her head.
"The woman who created the Trust."
Victor looked toward the file.
"What's her name?"
Clara hesitated.
Then:
"Isabella."
Victor repeated it.
"Isabella."
Elena suddenly began crying.
Victor turned.
"You know her."
Elena shook her head.
"I knew of her."
"Who was she?"
"She was the only person your father ever feared."
Victor stepped closer.
"Why?"
"Because she knew the original secret."
"What secret?"
Elena looked at Ethan.
"The Trust doesn't belong to the Hale family."
Victor frowned.
"Then who does it belong to?"
Elena whispered:
"The child."
Victor looked at Ethan.
"Which child?"
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"The child Isabella had before she died."
Victor froze.
"Who?"
Elena didn't answer.
Clara did.
"Your father."
Victor stared.
"That's impossible."
Clara shook her head.
"No."
"The man you call Edward Hale..."
She swallowed.
"...wasn't Isabella's husband."
"He was her son."
Victor's face went blank.
The room seemed to tilt.
His entire family tree had become a maze of lies.
Then Ethan tugged at his sleeve.
"Daddy."
Victor looked down.
"What?"
Ethan pointed toward the file.
"That's Mommy."
Victor followed his finger.
On the bottom of the document was a photograph.
A woman standing beside Isabella.
Victor stared.
It was Evelyn.
But beneath her photograph was a name he had never seen before.
EVELYN ISABELLA HALE.
Victor's heart stopped.
The voice on the speaker returned.
"You finally found it."
Victor looked up.
His father's voice whispered:
"The Trust."
"Your wife."
"Your son."
"And the woman in the photograph."
"They are all connected."
Victor stared at the photograph.
Then he noticed something.
A small mark in the corner.
Three circles.
The same symbol engraved on the gold key.
Victor picked up the key.
The number had changed again.
19.
Clara stared.
"What does that mean?"
Victor shook his head.
"I don't know."
Then the hidden drawer beneath the desk opened by itself.
Inside was a single envelope.
Victor pulled it out.
His name was written across it.
VICTOR — OPEN ONLY AFTER THE TRUST REVEALS ITS SECOND BENEFICIARY.
Victor opened the envelope.
Inside was one photograph.
A woman.
Pregnant.
Standing beside Evelyn.
Victor stared.
He recognized the face.
The woman from the family photograph.
Isabella.
But the woman beside her—
was not Evelyn.
It was someone else.
Someone Victor knew.
Someone standing in the room.
Victor slowly raised his eyes.
Everyone followed his gaze.
And Elena whispered:
"No."
Victor stared at Serena.
Serena's face had gone completely white.
The photograph slipped from Victor's fingers.
On the back, one sentence was written:
THE SECOND BENEFICIARY IS SERENA.
Serena stepped backward.
"I can explain."
Victor raised his weapon.
"You'd better."
Before Serena could speak, the mansion's security system suddenly activated.
Every speaker in the facility came alive.
Then a man's voice announced:
"Secondary beneficiary confirmed."
The doors opened.
Armed men flooded the corridor.
Victor pulled Ethan behind him.
Clara raised her gun.
Elena screamed.
And Serena—
instead of running—
walked calmly toward the soldiers.
One of them lowered his weapon.
"Welcome home, Mrs. Hale."
Victor stared.
Serena turned.
For the first time, the frightened woman he thought he knew was gone.
Her posture changed.
Her face became cold.
And she smiled.
"Hello, Victor."
The soldiers stepped aside.
Serena looked at him.
"I think it's time you learned why I was chosen to inherit everything."
Victor's grip tightened.
"Why?"
Serena's smile disappeared.
"Because I am the only person who knows where your father is."
She paused.
"And I've been protecting him from you."
The doors slammed shut.
The Trust had chosen its second beneficiary.
And Victor finally understood—
May you like
the woman he had spent years believing was his enemy...
might have been the person keeping him alive.
