CHAPTER 1: THE BRACELET THAT WAS NEVER LOST

CHAPTER 1: THE BRACELET THAT WAS NEVER LOST

Ava stopped smiling.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

The kind of shift that happens when confidence realizes it was never built on solid ground.

Grant frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

I didn’t answer him.

I was looking at Ava’s wrist.

At the emerald bracelet.

My grandmother’s.

Now secured perfectly against her skin like it belonged there.

Like she had always deserved it.

The room felt different.

Heavier.

Even the chandeliers seemed louder now.

Ava tried to laugh again.

It came out wrong.

"What… is this?"

I finally looked at Grant.

And for the first time that evening, he didn’t look bored.

He looked uncertain.

That was new for him.

I reached for the cream envelope on the table.

Slid it forward.

Not dramatically.

Not angrily.

Just enough for everyone to see.

Grant stared at it.

"What did you do?"

I smiled.

A small, patient smile.

The kind you learn after years of being underestimated.

"I didn’t do anything," I said softly. "You did."

Ava instinctively touched the bracelet again.

The clasp clicked under her fingers.

That sound made her freeze.

Because suddenly she understood something she hadn’t understood before:

May you like

It wasn’t just jewelry.

It was evidence.
