CHAPTER 3: THE GIFT FOR THE ROOM

CHAPTER 3: THE GIFT FOR THE ROOM

I placed the paper on the table.

Not toward him.

Toward everyone.

So no one could pretend they didn’t see it.

Ava’s voice was barely audible now.

"What is happening?"

Grant didn’t answer her.

He was reading.

Fast.

Too fast.

The color drained from his face in small stages.

First arrogance.

Then disbelief.

Then something almost like panic.

His mother frowned.

"What does it say?"

I answered instead.

"It says the bracelet was never stolen."

Silence.

I continued.

"It was loaned."

Ava blinked.

"Loaned?"

I nodded.

"By your husband."

Grant snapped his head up.

"You’re lying."

I shook my head.

"No."

My phone lit up beside my plate again.

I turned it so only I could see.

The confirmation had arrived.

Right on time.

Exactly as planned.

Then I looked at Ava.

And for the first time, I felt something close to pity.

"Thirty-one days ago," I said quietly, "your boyfriend walked into my house while I was away."

Grant’s jaw tightened.

"I don’t know what you think you’re—"

"And opened my safe."

That shut him up.

Ava stared at him now.

Really stared.

Not at the version of him she had built in her head.

But at the man sitting across from her.

I leaned forward slightly.

"And replaced my grandmother’s bracelet with a tracking device so you could ‘prove’ I was losing my memory if I ever noticed it missing."

The room went still.

Even the phone stopped recording.

For the first time, his sister lowered her camera.

Grant’s voice dropped.

"You can’t prove that."

I smiled again.

This time without warmth.

"I didn’t need you to admit it."

I tapped the envelope once.

"I needed you to let her wear it in public."

Ava’s breath hitched.

Understanding hit her like a wave.

"This was… planned?"

I looked at her.

Not cruelly.

Not triumphantly.

Just honestly.

"I was waiting for you to help me end it."

Grant stood up so fast his chair scraped backward.

"What did you do?"

I finally picked up my phone.

Turned it outward.

And showed the message.

“Device active. Location confirmed. Audio captured. Upload complete.”

Then I looked at him.

And said the final thing he never expected to hear.

May you like

"I didn’t accuse you, Grant."

"I documented you."
