CHAPTER 1: THE ONE-MILLION-DOLLAR BID

CHAPTER 1: THE ONE-MILLION-DOLLAR BID

The ballroom fell silent.

Not the polite silence of wealthy people waiting for a punchline.

A shocked silence.

The kind that arrives when reality suddenly changes direction.

Julian's smile remained frozen on his face.

"What?"

The voice came again.

"One million dollars."

Every head turned toward the back of the room.

A tall man stood near the entrance.

Gray suit.

No entourage.

No attempt to attract attention.

Yet something about him commanded the entire room.

He slowly stepped forward.

The polished marble floor echoed beneath his shoes.

Julian laughed nervously.

"Well, someone understands a joke."

The stranger didn't smile.

"I wasn't joking."

The room became even quieter.

My heart pounded.

I had never seen this man before.

Yet somehow he seemed strangely familiar.

Julian shifted uncomfortably.

"This is a charity auction."

"So I understand."

The stranger removed a checkbook from his jacket.

"I offered one million dollars."

A murmur spread through the guests.

Several board members exchanged confused looks.

The stranger's gaze never left Julian.

"You asked what your wife was worth."

Julian swallowed.

For the first time that evening, he looked uncertain.

Then the stranger said something that changed everything.

"The real question is why you think she's worth so little."
