CHAPTER 3: THE MAN FROM MY PAST

CHAPTER 3: THE MAN FROM MY PAST

Julian stepped forward.

"Who exactly are you?"

The stranger finally looked at him.

A faint smile touched his face.

"My name is Gabriel Mercer."

The name hit me like lightning.

Gabriel?

Impossible.

Twenty-five years disappeared in an instant.

A university library.

Late-night study sessions.

Dreams.

Promises.

The man I almost married.

The man who vanished after accepting a research fellowship overseas.

Gabriel turned toward me.

His eyes softened.

"Eleanor."

My chest tightened.

He still remembered.

After all these years.

Julian looked between us.

Confused.

Then suspicious.

"You know each other?"

Gabriel nodded.

"Very well."

The room leaned in.

Everyone sensed something important.

Gabriel calmly addressed the crowd.

"Twenty-five years ago, Eleanor was the brightest person I knew."

I looked down.

Nobody had called me that in decades.

"She turned down opportunities most people would have begged for."

Julian frowned.

"What opportunities?"

Gabriel looked genuinely surprised.

"You never told him?"

I hadn't.

There seemed little point.

Not anymore.

Gabriel continued.

"Eleanor was offered a leadership position in one of the country's top nonprofit foundations."

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

"She declined because she believed in her husband's dream."

Now people stared openly at Julian.

Not with admiration.

With judgment.

Gabriel's voice remained calm.

May you like

"She sacrificed a remarkable career so someone else could build theirs."

For the first time all night, Julian had nothing to say.
