Chapter 1 – The Code Black Awakens

Chapter 1 – The Code Black Awakens

The first mistake Richard made...

was believing the man standing in front of him was just an old father.

He saw gray hair.

A worn pickup truck.

A quiet man who preferred black coffee and early mornings.

He saw someone who had spent fifteen years living a simple life.

And Richard believed simple meant weak.

That was the mistake.

Because Arthur Bennett had never been weak.

He had only been retired.

And there was a difference.

Nine Minutes

Richard stood on the marble steps of his mansion, still smiling.

He held divorce documents in one hand.

A glass of Scotch in the other.

Behind him, the Easter celebration continued.

Children searched for colorful eggs.

Guests whispered behind expensive sunglasses.

The wealthy laughed because they believed nothing could touch them.

They had no idea that everything they owned was about to become evidence.

Arthur stood beside his truck.

His daughter Lily was unconscious in the passenger seat.

Her face was swollen.

Her body was covered in injuries she had hidden for two years.

Two years.

Arthur repeated those words silently.

Two years his daughter had suffered while he sat across from Richard at family dinners.

Two years Richard smiled and called him "Dad."

Two years Arthur ignored the instinct that had saved his life countless times.

Because instincts were easier to trust when the enemy was obvious.

Richard had hidden behind a suit.

A mansion.

A perfect reputation.

But monsters did not always look like monsters.

Sometimes they looked successful.

Sometimes they shook your hand.

Sometimes they married your daughter.

The satellite phone remained pressed against Arthur's ear.

"The federal task force is airborne."

The voice on the other end remained calm.

"Arrival in nine minutes."

Richard laughed.

"Are you seriously standing there making a phone call?"

Arthur looked at him.

No anger.

No fear.

That bothered Richard.

"You really don't understand what is happening, do you?"

Richard walked closer.

"You broke into my house."

"You attacked my family."

"You took my wife."

A smile appeared.

"Everyone here saw it."

Arthur looked toward the guests.

Nobody spoke.

Because Richard had spent years creating an audience.

People who owed him money.

People who feared him.

People who benefited from pretending not to see.

Richard lowered his voice.

"You think because you were some kind of soldier fifteen years ago that makes you special?"

Arthur's eyes narrowed slightly.

Just slightly.

And Richard missed it.

Because arrogant people always miss small warnings.

"I know exactly who I am," Arthur said.

Richard smiled.

"No."

"You know who you used to be."

The words hung between them.

And for the first time...

Arthur looked directly at him.

"That is where you are wrong."

The Man Behind the Name

Fifteen years earlier...

Arthur Bennett disappeared.

Officially, he became a private citizen.

A father.

A husband who lost his wife.

A man who wanted nothing more than to raise Lily.

But before that...

Arthur Bennett was not a name.

It was a file.

A classified designation.

A person sent when normal solutions failed.

He had worked in places where governments denied involvement.

He had protected people who would never know his name.

He had hunted men who believed money made them untouchable.

Then Lily was born.

And everything changed.

Arthur realized he had spent his entire life protecting strangers...

while missing the one person who mattered most.

So he left.

He destroyed his old identity.

He buried his equipment.

He became a father.

The greatest mission he ever accepted.

Until today.

Lily Wakes

Inside the truck, Lily slowly opened her eyes.

"Dad..."

Arthur immediately turned.

"I'm here."

Her breathing was weak.

"Where are we?"

"Outside."

Her eyes filled with panic.

"No..."

She grabbed his sleeve.

"He'll come after us."

Arthur froze.

Because those words were more painful than the injuries.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she believed nobody could stop him.

Arthur gently held her hand.

"Look at me."

She did.

"Richard is not coming near you again."

"Dad..."

"You believe me?"

A long silence.

Then Lily nodded.

Because even after everything...

She still trusted him.

The First Arrival

Eight minutes later...

Richard noticed the sound.

At first, he thought it was another guest arriving.

Then the sky changed.

A black helicopter appeared above the estate.

The children stopped searching for eggs.

Adults stepped outside.

Phones came out.

Confusion spread.

Richard looked annoyed.

"What is this?"

Then another vehicle entered the gates.

Then another.

Black SUVs.

No markings.

No explanation.

Just authority.

Richard's smile slowly disappeared.

The police chief stepped forward.

"Who are these people?"

Nobody answered him.

Because for the first time...

The police chief was not the most powerful person at the party.

A woman wearing a dark federal jacket stepped forward.

"Richard Hale?"

Richard hesitated.

"Yes."

She showed identification.

"Federal investigation unit."

The entire garden went silent.

Richard laughed nervously.

"This must be some misunderstanding."

The agent looked toward Arthur.

Then toward Lily.

"No."

"It is not."

The First Crack

Richard's mother pushed through the crowd.

"This is ridiculous."

She looked at Arthur.

"You did this?"

Arthur didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

"You have no idea who you're dealing with."

Arthur looked at her.

Actually...

he did.

He knew exactly who they were.

He knew every account.

Every connection.

Every person they paid.

Every person they threatened.

Because the moment Richard hurt Lily...

Arthur stopped being just a father.

He became what he used to be.

A man who collected evidence.

A man who finished missions.

A man enemies prayed would never notice them.

The federal agent approached Richard.

"Mr. Hale, we have a warrant to search this property."

Richard's face changed.

"For what?"

The agent looked at Arthur.

Then at Lily.

"Multiple charges."

"Assault."

"Domestic violence."

"Witness intimidation."

"Evidence tampering."

"And conspiracy."

The guests gasped.

Richard looked around.

Waiting for someone to save him.

The police chief.

His mother.

His friends.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone finally understood.

The man they thought was powerless...

had just brought an army.

Arthur walked toward Lily.

He ignored Richard completely.

That hurt Richard more than anger would have.

"You think this is over?"

Richard shouted.

Arthur stopped.

Slowly turned.

For fifteen years, Arthur buried the man he used to be.

But now Richard saw a glimpse.

Just enough.

"You hurt my daughter."

His voice was quiet.

"That was your final mistake."

Richard's confidence finally disappeared.

Because he realized something terrifying.

Arthur was not here to argue.

He was not here to threaten.

He was not here to negotiate.

He was here to end something.

The Easter party was over.

The investigation had begun.

And Richard Hale was about to learn the truth:

The most dangerous people are not the ones who seek revenge.

They are the ones who spent years learning patience.
