Chapter 10 – The Trial Begins

Chapter 10 – The Trial Begins

The day Richard Hale had spent his entire life believing would never come finally arrived.

The courtroom doors opened.

The cameras turned.

The world watched.

And for the first time...

Richard Hale entered a room where money could not buy silence.

The Man Who Owned Rooms

Richard had always been the most powerful person in any room.

At business meetings.

At charity events.

At political gatherings.

People stood when he entered.

They waited for his approval.

They adjusted their opinions according to his mood.

But the courtroom was different.

The judge did not care about his reputation.

The jury did not care about his mansion.

The reporters did not care about his expensive watch.

Only one thing mattered.

Evidence.

And Richard Hale had spent years creating evidence against himself.

The Morning of the Trial

Arthur arrived early.

He stood outside the courthouse with Lily beside him.

She looked nervous.

Not because she doubted the truth.

Because she knew the truth was painful.

Thousands of people were watching.

Millions would hear things she had spent two years trying to forget.

Arthur looked at her.

"You don't have to do this."

Lily shook her head.

"Yes, I do."

A pause.

"If I stay silent, he wins."

Arthur nodded.

Because he understood.

This trial was not only about punishment.

It was about taking back control.

Richard’s Last Performance

Inside the courthouse, Richard looked completely different.

No arrogance.

No anger.

No threats.

Instead...

He looked broken.

A man betrayed by circumstances.

A husband misunderstood.

A businessman attacked.

His lawyers had prepared the performance carefully.

They knew exactly what Richard needed to become.

A victim.

Before the judge entered, Richard turned toward the cameras.

A small tear appeared in his eye.

"I just want the truth."

The statement spread immediately.

Some people believed him.

That was always Richard's greatest talent.

Making lies look reasonable.

The Opening Statement

The prosecutor stood.

"Members of the jury..."

She looked toward Richard.

"This case is not about a single incident."

A pause.

"It is about a pattern."

The courtroom became silent.

"A pattern of control."

"A pattern of intimidation."

"A pattern where wealth was used to silence victims."

Richard's expression remained calm.

But Arthur noticed.

His fingers tightened.

Just slightly.

A small sign.

The mask was slipping.

Richard’s Defense

Then Richard's attorney stood.

A famous lawyer known for destroying reputations.

He smiled confidently.

"This case is built on emotion."

He walked slowly before the jury.

"Everyone feels sympathy for Mrs. Hale."

A pause.

"But sympathy is not evidence."

Arthur watched carefully.

This was the strategy.

Attack the victim.

Create doubt.

Make people uncomfortable believing the truth.

The lawyer continued.

"My client is a successful man being targeted because of his wealth."

Then he looked toward Arthur.

"And because of a powerful father-in-law with a hidden past."

The courtroom shifted.

The attack had begun.

Lily Takes the Stand

The moment everyone feared arrived.

"Lily Bennett Hale."

Her name echoed through the courtroom.

She walked forward slowly.

Arthur wanted to stand.

To protect her.

To stop the pain.

But he remained seated.

Because this was Lily's moment.

Not his.

She took the oath.

The prosecutor approached.

"Mrs. Hale, can you describe your marriage?"

Lily looked down.

For a moment, she was back there.

The mansion.

The locked doors.

The fear.

Then she looked up.

"At first, I thought I was the luckiest woman alive."

The courtroom listened.

"Richard knew exactly what to say."

"He made me feel seen."

A pause.

"Then slowly, things changed."

The First Time

The prosecutor asked:

"When did you first become afraid of him?"

Lily took a deep breath.

"Six months after our wedding."

Richard's lawyer immediately objected.

"Speculation."

The judge allowed the question.

Lily continued.

"He grabbed my arm during an argument."

A silence followed.

"He apologized afterward."

She swallowed.

"He cried."

The jury watched her carefully.

"And I believed him."

The Cycle

The prosecutor showed photographs.

Not dramatic.

Not sensational.

Just evidence.

Bruises.

Medical records.

Messages.

The courtroom became quieter with every piece.

Richard stared forward.

Expressionless.

But inside...

he was calculating.

He needed a way out.

The Phone Recording

Then came the evidence Richard feared most.

The cracked phone.

The recording from Easter Sunday.

The courtroom speakers played his voice.

Calm.

Cruel.

Confident.

"You think your father can save you?"

The courtroom went silent.

Richard's own words filled the room.

"You don't understand how this works."

Another recording.

"You have nowhere to go."

Another.

"Nobody will believe you."

Lily closed her eyes.

She had heard those words before.

Now the whole world heard them.

The Police Chief’s Testimony

The next witness shocked everyone.

Chief Daniel Morris.

The police chief who had been eating barbecue at Richard's Easter party.

He entered the courtroom wearing a suit.

But he looked smaller.

Broken.

The prosecutor asked:

"Did you receive benefits from Richard Hale?"

The chief remained silent.

Then:

"Yes."

A wave of whispers spread.

"Did you alter reports involving Mr. Hale?"

Another silence.

"Yes."

Richard looked at him with hatred.

Because betrayal hurt most when it came from someone you controlled.

Margaret Hale Arrives

The biggest surprise came near the end of the day.

Margaret Hale entered the courtroom.

Everyone turned.

Richard's mother.

The woman who defended him for years.

The woman who helped build his empire.

She sat quietly.

The prosecutor approached.

"Mrs. Hale."

Margaret looked forward.

"Are you here to support your son?"

A long pause.

Then:

"No."

Richard's face changed.

The courtroom erupted.

The prosecutor continued.

"Then why are you here?"

Margaret answered calmly.

"Because I know what my son did."

The First Crack

Richard stood suddenly.

"Mother."

Just one word.

But everyone heard the fear.

The judge ordered him seated.

Margaret never looked at him.

That hurt him more than any accusation.

Because Richard finally understood.

The person who created his power...

was now helping destroy it.

The Secret Evidence

Before leaving the courtroom, Margaret gave prosecutors one final piece of information.

A hidden recording.

One Richard never knew existed.

A conversation between Richard and his mother.

Years earlier.

Before Lily.

Before the marriage.

Before everything.

Richard's voice could be heard clearly.

"I don't care about her."

A pause.

"I care about what she gives me access to."

The courtroom froze.

Then another sentence.

Arthur Bennett's name.

Lily's name.

The plan.

The manipulation.

The entire marriage.

A carefully designed trap.

Richard Finally Understands

At the end of the day, Richard stood alone in the courtroom.

No supporters.

No friends.

No powerful allies.

Only the evidence.

Only the truth.

Arthur watched him.

For the first time...

Richard looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

Because he finally understood.

The empire he built on fear had one fatal weakness.

Fear disappears when people stop believing they are powerless.

And everyone had stopped.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Arthur.

"Mr. Bennett, do you believe Richard Hale will be convicted?"

Arthur looked toward the courtroom doors.

Then toward Lily.

"I believe the truth has finally been heard."

A reporter shouted:

"But what about Richard's remaining secrets?"

Arthur's expression changed slightly.

Because he knew.

Richard still had secrets.

And one of them involved the person who had been standing beside him all along.

Lily.

The trial had begun.

But the final battle had not.

Because Richard Hale was not finished.

He had one last move.

One final piece of evidence.

And when it was revealed...

everyone would question whether Arthur Bennett had been protecting his daughter...

or hiding something from her.
