Chapter 7 – Lily’s Missing Years

Chapter 7 – Lily’s Missing Years

For two years, Lily Bennett had been disappearing.

Not physically.

She still went to work.

She still smiled at family dinners.

She still answered phone calls.

She still posted carefully chosen photographs online where everyone believed she had the perfect marriage.

But the real Lily...

The daughter Arthur knew...

had been slowly buried beneath fear.

And nobody noticed.

Not because she hid well.

Because Richard made sure nobody looked closely enough.

The Daughter Who Stopped Asking for Help

Arthur sat alone in his living room that night.

The same house where he had raised Lily.

The same kitchen where she used to sit on the counter while stealing pieces of pancake batter.

The same hallway where she ran toward him after losing her first tooth.

Memories filled every corner.

But now those memories were mixed with something painful.

Questions.

How many times had Lily wanted to tell him?

How many times had she picked up her phone?

How many times had she typed:

"Dad, I need help."

And then deleted it?

Arthur looked at his phone.

There were hundreds of messages between him and Lily over the last two years.

Most were normal.

"Dinner was great."

"Hope your garden is doing well."

"Busy week at work."

Small conversations.

Safe conversations.

But Arthur noticed something now.

Something he had missed before.

The changes.

The messages became shorter.

The excitement disappeared.

The jokes became rare.

Lily was not living.

She was surviving.

The First Warning Sign

Elena arrived the next morning with more information.

She placed a file on the table.

"We found financial records from Richard."

Arthur opened it.

"Payments?"

"Not exactly."

She pointed to several transactions.

"Luxury gifts."

"Jewelry."

"Trips."

"Apartment expenses."

Arthur frowned.

"That doesn't prove anything."

"No."

Elena opened another page.

"But these payments were made after arguments."

Arthur looked closer.

Every time Lily tried to leave...

Richard bought something.

Every time she threatened divorce...

A vacation appeared.

Every time she questioned him...

A gift arrived.

Arthur understood.

"It was a cycle."

Elena nodded.

"Control followed by kindness."

"The victim starts believing the good moments are the real person."

Arthur looked away.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Lily didn't stay because she was weak.

She stayed because Richard kept giving her hope.

The Hidden Messages

The investigators recovered Lily's old phone backups.

Most people thought deleted messages were gone forever.

Arthur knew better.

Nothing disappeared.

It only became harder to find.

Elena handed him a tablet.

"We found something."

On the screen were messages Lily had written.

But never sent.

Arthur hesitated.

"Are you sure she wants me to see these?"

Elena's expression softened.

"No father should have to read these."

A pause.

"But you deserve to know."

Arthur opened the first one.

Dad, I think something is wrong.

His heart tightened.

The date was eighteen months earlier.

Another message.

I don't know how to explain it. Richard is nice sometimes. Then he changes.

Another.

I don't want you to hate him. I just want someone to tell me if I'm imagining things.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Because she wasn't asking him to fight.

She was asking him to believe her.

The Night Lily Almost Left

The investigation uncovered one important event.

Six months before Easter.

Lily had booked a hotel room.

One night.

One suitcase.

A plan.

She was leaving.

But she never did.

Arthur looked at the record.

"Why?"

Elena showed him security footage.

Richard arriving at the hotel.

Two hours later...

Lily leaving with him.

Arthur watched silently.

"What happened inside?"

Nobody knew.

Until they found the message.

A message Lily sent to a friend afterward.

He promised he would change.

Arthur stared at those words.

The same promise repeated by thousands of people trapped in unhealthy relationships.

The promise that keeps people waiting.

The promise that keeps people hoping.

The Friend Who Knew

The investigators found Lily's college friend, Hannah.

She agreed to speak.

They met at a quiet café.

Hannah looked guilty.

"I should have done more."

Arthur sat across from her.

"What did you know?"

She looked down.

"Enough."

The answer hurt.

She continued.

"Lily called me after the first time."

Arthur's expression changed.

"The first time?"

Hannah nodded.

"She said Richard grabbed her during an argument."

Arthur's hands tightened.

"What did she say?"

Hannah swallowed.

"She said she was scared."

A pause.

"But she also said she loved him."

Arthur looked out the window.

Because that was the cruelest part.

People expected victims to leave the moment they were hurt.

They didn't understand fear.

They didn't understand attachment.

They didn't understand how someone could love the person who was destroying them.

Richard’s Secret Strategy

While Arthur learned the truth about Lily's past...

Richard was preparing his own attack.

His lawyers created a new story.

A story where he was the victim.

A story where Arthur was dangerous.

A story where Lily was influenced by her father.

Richard knew one thing.

If he couldn't prove he was innocent...

he would make everyone question the evidence.

His lawyer showed him the plan.

"We focus on Arthur."

Richard looked up.

"Explain."

"His background."

"The classified history."

"His connections."

"We make people afraid of him."

Richard slowly smiled.

Because finally...

he had found a weapon.

The truth.

Arthur Bennett was not an ordinary father.

And Richard intended to use that against him.

Lily Faces Her Past

That evening, Arthur visited Lily.

She was sitting near the window.

Quiet.

"Dad?"

"Yes?"

"Did you read them?"

Arthur knew immediately what she meant.

The unsent messages.

He nodded.

Lily looked away.

"I was embarrassed."

Arthur sat beside her.

"Why?"

"Because I let it happen."

"No."

Her eyes filled.

"I should have left."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"I should have seen it."

"No."

"I should have trusted you."

Arthur gently took her hand.

"Lily."

She looked at him.

"Richard made you believe everything was your fault."

A pause.

"But it wasn't."

For the first time in days...

Lily cried.

Not from pain.

From finally hearing the words she needed.

The Missing Piece

Later that night, Elena called Arthur.

"We found something else."

Arthur answered immediately.

"What?"

A pause.

"Richard wasn't only hiding his violence."

"What was he hiding?"

"His marriage."

Arthur frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"We found evidence he planned something before he married Lily."

Arthur became still.

"Planned?"

"Yes."

Elena's voice lowered.

"He didn't marry her because he loved her."

Silence.

"He married her because of who she was connected to."

Arthur felt cold.

"Connected to who?"

Elena hesitated.

Then answered.

"To you."

Arthur stared into the darkness.

For two years, he thought Richard had hurt Lily because Richard was cruel.

But now he understood.

There was another possibility.

A more dangerous one.

Richard Hale had not chosen Lily by accident.

He had chosen her because she was Arthur Bennett's daughter.

And if that was true...

Then the entire marriage had been a trap from the beginning.
