Chapter 6 – The Video Nobody Wanted Found

Chapter 6 – The Video Nobody Wanted Found

The Carter family had survived scandals before.

They survived business failures.

They survived lawsuits.

They survived betrayals.

Because the Carter family had one rule.

Nothing leaves the walls of the mansion.

For decades, they controlled everything.

The employees.

The newspapers.

The rumors.

The truth.

But there was one thing they never learned how to control.

A forgotten camera.

And a single recording.

The Morning After the Hearing

The temporary custody decision changed everything.

For the first time in years, people stopped whispering about Mark Carter as the obedient son.

They started asking questions.

Why did Bethany need emergency custody if she had done nothing wrong?

Why was there footage?

Why did a child look terrified around her own family?

Questions were dangerous.

Especially for the Carters.

Bethany spent the morning inside the family office.

The same room where she had celebrated every victory.

But today...

She was losing control.

The television played the news.

"New developments have emerged in the Carter family custody dispute after a former employee provided testimony regarding alleged mistreatment of a minor."

Bethany grabbed the remote and turned it off.

"Enough."

Eleanor sat silently near the window.

That silence irritated Bethany.

"Say something."

Her mother didn't move.

"What do you want me to say?"

"That Mark is wrong."

Eleanor looked at her.

For the first time in years, Bethany saw disappointment instead of protection.

"You should never have touched that child."

The words felt like a betrayal.

Bethany stood.

"You too?"

Eleanor looked away.

"I protected you too much."

A cold smile appeared on Bethany's face.

"Now you regret it?"

"No."

Eleanor whispered.

"I regret that I taught you love meant never facing consequences."

Bethany walked out.

Because she could handle anger.

She could handle hatred.

But she could not handle the possibility that everyone finally saw her.

The Missing Recording

Meanwhile, Mark met Thomas Reed at a private office.

Thomas placed a tablet on the desk.

"We found the original security archive."

Mark looked surprised.

"I thought it was deleted."

"It was."

"Then how?"

Thomas leaned back.

"Someone deleted the main system."

A pause.

"But they forgot about the backup."

Mark looked at the screen.

"Where was it stored?"

Thomas answered:

"Your father's private server."

That sentence changed everything.

"My father?"

Thomas nodded.

"Your father built the security system himself."

Mark stared.

"Why would he keep copies?"

Thomas gave him a serious look.

"Because William Carter trusted nobody completely."

The words stayed with Mark.

His father had known.

He had known the family was not what it appeared to be.

The Recording

Thomas opened the file.

The timestamp appeared.

Three weeks before the dinner incident.

The video began.

The camera showed the east hallway of the Carter mansion.

Rosie walked slowly.

She was holding a stuffed rabbit.

Mark immediately recognized it.

The same rabbit she still slept with.

Then Bethany appeared.

Mark's body became tense.

Even before anything happened...

He saw it.

Rosie's posture changed.

Her shoulders lowered.

She became smaller.

Children did not react that way around people they trusted.

Bethany bent down.

The audio was faint.

Thomas increased the volume.

Bethany's voice filled the room.

"Why are you crying again?"

Rosie's small voice answered:

"I want Daddy."

Bethany sighed.

"Your daddy is busy."

"I want him."

Bethany's expression changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Annoyance.

"You always need attention."

Mark's hands tightened.

The video continued.

Rosie stepped backward.

"I don't like this."

Bethany grabbed her arm.

The image froze for a moment.

But it was enough.

Enough to show force.

Enough to show fear.

Then came the sentence that destroyed Bethany.

"If you tell your daddy..."

Bethany leaned closer.

"He won't believe you."

The room became silent.

Mark stared at the screen.

His daughter had been telling the truth.

She had always been telling the truth.

The people around her simply chose not to listen.

The Second Recording

Thomas didn't close the file.

"There is more."

Mark looked up.

"More?"

Thomas opened another clip.

This one showed the dining room.

The night of the incident.

Before Mark entered.

The camera angle was different.

It showed everything.

Bethany grabbing Rosie.

Rosie trying to move away.

The adults watching.

Nobody stopping it.

Mark felt sick.

Because this was not one person failing his daughter.

It was everyone.

Then the video captured Eleanor.

She walked into the room.

She saw Rosie crying.

She saw Bethany.

And she said:

"Bethany, not here."

Not:

Stop.

Not:

What are you doing?

Not:

Leave her alone.

Just:

Not here.

Mark closed his eyes.

That hurt more than Bethany.

Because Bethany was cruel.

But Eleanor was supposed to protect him.

The Public Release

Mark's lawyers wanted to release the footage immediately.

"Once this is public, they cannot manipulate the story."

Mark sat quietly.

He understood.

The video would destroy Bethany.

It would destroy Eleanor.

It would destroy the Carter image.

But he looked at Rosie.

His daughter was playing outside.

She deserved privacy.

She deserved peace.

Not to become a headline.

"What happens if we release it?"

Mark asked.

His lawyer answered:

"The public will know the truth."

"And Rosie?"

The lawyer became quiet.

That was the answer.

Mark made his decision.

"Not yet."

Thomas looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because I'm not using my daughter's pain as a weapon."

A pause.

"I will expose the truth."

Mark looked toward the window.

"But I will not sacrifice her to do it."

Bethany's Desperate Move

Unfortunately for Mark...

Bethany did not have the same restraint.

That evening, she called a press conference.

The media arrived immediately.

She stood in front of cameras wearing a serious expression.

"I want everyone to know that I love my niece."

Mark watched the broadcast.

Already knowing what was coming.

"I made mistakes."

Bethany lowered her head.

"But I never intended harm."

The reporters listened.

Then she delivered the attack.

"My brother has been under extreme emotional pressure."

Mark's expression hardened.

"He lost control."

There it was.

The story she wanted.

The angry father.

The unstable man.

The dangerous son.

Then one reporter asked:

"Ms. Carter, there are claims that video evidence exists."

Bethany froze for half a second.

Only half.

Then she recovered.

"I have no idea what video you mean."

But Mark noticed something.

A tiny reaction.

Fear.

Because Bethany knew.

The video existed.

And she knew exactly what it showed.

The Person Behind the Attack

That night, Mark received another message.

Same unknown number.

You found the recording.

Mark stared.

A second message appeared.

Now you understand why your father hid everything.

Mark replied:

Who are you?

The answer came quickly.

Someone who tried to warn him.

Mark's heartbeat increased.

About what?

The response appeared.

About the person who caused his death.

Mark stopped.

The room became silent.

His father's death.

The accident.

The lie.

Everything suddenly connected.

The fight for Rosie had opened a door.

Behind that door was a secret twenty years old.

A secret the Carter family killed to protect.

Mark looked upstairs at his daughter.

Then back at the phone.

The truth was no longer just about Bethany.

Someone had destroyed his family long before Rosie was born.

And now...

Mark was coming for them.
