Chapter 8 â Bethanyâs Final Weapon

Chapter 8 â Bethanyâs Final Weapon
Bethany Carter had spent her entire life winning.
Not because she was always right.
Not because she was always the strongest.
Because she understood one thing better than anyone else.
People did not believe the truth.
They believed the version of the truth that made them feel comfortable.
And Bethany had always been very good at creating comfortable lies.
But now...
For the first time in her life, she was losing.
The custody battle.
The public image.
Her mother's trust.
The family's control.
Everything was slipping away.
And Mark was the reason.
So Bethany decided something.
If she could not defeat Mark by proving she was innocent...
She would destroy him by making everyone believe he was guilty.
The Woman Who Never Apologized
Bethany sat inside her apartment overlooking the city.
A glass of wine sat untouched beside her.
For hours, she stared at the same photograph.
Her family.
Mark.
Her.
Their parents.
A perfect picture.
A lie.
Her phone rang.
She answered without looking.
"Tell me."
The man on the other end spoke quietly.
"The media strategy is ready."
Bethany smiled.
"Good."
"We can push the narrative that Mark has become unstable after his wife's death."
Her smile disappeared.
"Don't mention Claire."
A pause.
"Why?"
Bethany looked at the photograph.
Because Claire had been the only person in the Carter family who saw through her.
Claire never feared Bethany.
She never competed with her.
She simply loved Rosie.
And Bethany hated that.
"Just don't."
The New Story
The next morning, the headlines changed.
Not about the video.
Not about Rosie.
About Mark.
"CARTER HEIR'S EMOTIONAL COLLAPSE: FAMILY CONCERNED FOR HIS MENTAL STATE"
"VIOLENCE, GRIEF, AND A BILLION-DOLLAR POWER STRUGGLE"
The articles carefully avoided accusations.
They didn't need to.
They planted doubt.
And doubt was powerful.
Mark read them while drinking coffee.
Thomas watched his reaction.
"They're trying to change the conversation."
Mark nodded.
"I know."
"They want people discussing your behavior instead of Bethany's."
Mark looked at the newspaper.
"That's exactly what they want."
But Thomas noticed something.
Mark was not angry.
He was thinking.
"What are you planning?"
Mark folded the paper.
"To stop fighting the story they created."
Thomas frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Mark looked at him.
"It means I tell the story first."
The Interview
Three days later, Mark did something nobody expected.
He agreed to a public interview.
The Carter family immediately celebrated.
Bethany thought he was making a mistake.
"He's desperate."
Her advisor smiled.
"Good."
"He will lose control."
But they underestimated one thing.
Mark had spent his entire life controlling his emotions.
The difference was...
Before, he controlled them to protect others.
Now, he controlled them to protect Rosie.
The reporter sat across from him.
The cameras turned on.
"Mr. Carter, many people believe this conflict is about money."
Mark looked directly at the camera.
"They are wrong."
"Then what is it about?"
"My daughter."
The reporter continued.
"Your sister claims you attacked her."
Mark nodded.
"I did."
The reporter looked surprised.
The public expected excuses.
Denial.
Instead, Mark told the truth.
"I hit her once."
A pause.
"I should not have done that."
The statement shocked everyone.
Because Bethany's entire argument depended on Mark refusing responsibility.
"But..."
Mark continued.
"I will never apologize for stopping someone who hurt my child."
The reporter became serious.
"Your sister says you are using this situation to take control of the Carter empire."
Mark looked down briefly.
Then:
"My daughter was injured before I ever knew about the inheritance."
Silence.
"The trust my father created was activated because of what happened to Rosie."
The reporter leaned forward.
"Your father?"
Mark looked at the camera.
"My father left behind secrets."
Another pause.
"And I believe those secrets explain why my family is afraid of the truth."
The Mistake Bethany Made
Bethany watched the interview from her office.
At first, she smiled.
She thought Mark was destroying himself.
Then the reporter asked:
"Do you believe your family betrayed you?"
And Mark answered:
"I know they did."
Bethany stopped smiling.
Because she realized something.
Mark wasn't talking only about Rosie anymore.
He knew.
He knew about the past.
He knew about their father.
She immediately called Eleanor.
"Did he find out?"
Silence.
Bethany's heart sank.
"Mother."
Eleanor finally answered.
"Yes."
Bethany stood.
"What did he find?"
Another silence.
"Everything."
The Final Weapon
That evening, Bethany met with her attorney.
"We need something stronger."
The attorney looked concerned.
"You already have public sympathy."
"No."
Bethany shook her head.
"Not enough."
"What do you want?"
Bethany looked at a folder on the table.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
Documents she had kept hidden for years.
"I want to destroy his credibility."
The attorney opened the folder.
His expression changed.
"Bethany..."
"Do it."
The next morning, Mark received a notification.
A lawsuit.
But not from Bethany.
From the state.
The accusation:
Financial misconduct.
Mark stared at the document.
"This is impossible."
Thomas read quickly.
Then his face became serious.
"They're claiming you misused company funds."
Mark looked up.
"I never touched those accounts."
"I know."
"Then who did?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Because both men knew.
Someone had created evidence.
The Betrayal Within
That afternoon, Mark returned home.
Rosie was drawing again.
"Daddy."
"Yes?"
"Are we moving again?"
The question hurt.
"No."
"Promise?"
Mark knelt beside her.
"I promise."
Rosie touched his face.
"You're sad again."
Mark smiled.
"A little."
"Because of bad people?"
He nodded.
Rosie thought for a moment.
Then she handed him her drawing.
It showed a superhero.
A small girl beside him.
"That's you."
Mark smiled.
"Why?"
"Because you fight monsters."
He looked at the picture.
Then at his daughter.
And something changed.
Bethany thought her final weapon was destroying his reputation.
She was wrong.
The moment she attacked him publicly...
She forced Mark to stop protecting the Carter name.
Now he had no reason to hide anything.
No reason to protect secrets.
No reason to save people who had abandoned him.
That night, Mark opened his father's archive again.
He found one final folder.
Hidden behind the others.
The label was simple.
IF THEY COME FOR MARK.
His hands froze.
Because his father had known this day would come.
Inside was a letter.
The first line made Mark stop breathing.
My son,
If Bethany ever tries to destroy you, remember this.
She is not acting alone.
Mark turned the page.
And the next sentence revealed the truth.
The person controlling her is the same person who killed me.
Mark stared.
The war had just changed.
Bethany was not the enemy.
She was a weapon.
And somewhere behind her...
The real enemy was waiting.
