Chapter 7 – The Secret Brother

Chapter 7 – The Secret Brother

The message stayed on Mark’s phone for eleven hours.

He read it again and again.

Someone who tried to warn him.

At first, he thought it was a threat.

A game.

A manipulation tactic from someone inside the Carter family.

But there was one detail he could not ignore.

The person knew about the video.

They knew about his father.

And they knew William Carter had been afraid.

The question was no longer:

Who hurt Rosie?

The question became:

Who destroyed the Carter family twenty years ago?

The Man Behind the Name

The next morning, Mark met Thomas Reed at an old private archive owned by the Carter legal team.

The building was hidden between two modern offices downtown.

No signs.

No advertisements.

No indication that one of the most powerful families in the country stored decades of secrets inside.

Thomas unlocked the door.

"You should know something before we go inside."

Mark looked at him.

"What?"

"Your father created this archive because he believed someone inside the family would eventually try to erase history."

Mark looked around.

"Did he know?"

Thomas hesitated.

"Know what?"

"That his own family would betray him."

Thomas looked away.

That was answer enough.

Inside were thousands of documents.

Contracts.

Letters.

Photographs.

Financial records.

A lifetime of Carter history.

Thomas walked toward a locked cabinet.

"The key your father left you."

Mark pulled the small black key from his pocket.

He had almost forgotten about it.

The key slid into the lock perfectly.

For a moment, neither man moved.

Then Mark turned it.

The cabinet opened.

Inside was a single folder.

No company logo.

No label.

No name.

Only three words written across the front.

THE OTHER SON

Mark stared.

His heart slowed.

"Other son?"

Thomas looked equally confused.

"I have never seen this file."

Mark opened it.

And the first page changed everything.

William Carter’s Confession

The document was not a business report.

It was a letter.

Written by his father.

Mark,

There is something I should have told you before I died.

Mark stopped.

His hands tightened.

You grew up believing you were my only son.

A cold feeling moved through him.

That was never true.

The room became silent.

Thomas looked shocked.

Mark continued reading.

Before I married Eleanor, I had another child.

A pause.

His name was Adrian.

Mark looked up.

"Adrian?"

Thomas shook his head.

"I never heard that name."

Mark looked back at the letter.

I made mistakes when I was young. I believed money could repair everything.

It cannot.

Adrian was my first son. But because of my choices, he grew up without the Carter name.

Mark felt something strange.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Confusion.

His whole life had been built around being the forgotten son.

Now he discovered he wasn't even the first.

The Brother Nobody Knew

The file contained photographs.

A young man.

Late twenties.

Dark hair.

Serious expression.

He looked nothing like Mark.

But the eyes...

The eyes were unmistakably Carter.

Thomas picked up another document.

"Wait."

Mark looked at him.

"What?"

Thomas read silently.

Then his face changed.

"What does it say?"

Thomas slowly lowered the paper.

"Adrian wasn't just hidden."

A pause.

"He was removed."

The documents revealed the truth.

After William Carter discovered he had a son from a previous relationship, Eleanor found out.

And she was furious.

Not because William had betrayed her.

Because Adrian represented a threat.

A possible heir.

Someone who could challenge Bethany's future.

So Adrian was paid off.

Sent away.

Erased.

Mark felt sick.

Not because Adrian existed.

Because he understood.

The Carter family did not remove problems.

They removed people.

The First Meeting

Thomas found Adrian within two days.

He was living under a different name.

Adrian Vale.

A man who owned a small mechanic shop outside the city.

No luxury.

No mansion.

No Carter wealth.

Mark drove there alone.

He didn't know what he expected.

Maybe anger.

Maybe resentment.

Maybe someone who hated the family.

Instead, he found a quiet man repairing an old engine.

Adrian looked up.

And froze.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Adrian laughed softly.

"So."

Mark stood still.

"You're William's other son."

Adrian wiped his hands.

"And you're the son who got everything."

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

A Brother’s Anger

They sat inside the small office.

Adrian did not offer coffee.

He did not pretend.

"You want answers."

Mark nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because my father was murdered."

Adrian's expression changed.

"You know?"

"I know it wasn't an accident."

Silence.

Then Adrian leaned back.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Mark stared.

"You knew?"

Adrian looked out the window.

"I knew your father was afraid."

"Of who?"

Adrian looked directly at him.

"Your mother."

The words hit harder than Mark expected.

"My mother?"

Adrian nodded.

"Eleanor Carter was never interested in love."

Mark immediately became defensive.

"You don't know her."

Adrian smiled sadly.

"Neither did you."

The Night William Died

Adrian finally told him what happened.

A month before William's death, he contacted Adrian.

For the first time in decades.

William wanted to fix things.

Not financially.

Personally.

He wanted Adrian back.

But someone discovered their meeting.

Someone who believed Adrian could destroy everything.

"The night your father died..."

Adrian said quietly.

"He was coming to meet me."

Mark stopped.

"What?"

"That was the real reason he left the house."

The official story claimed William had gone to a late business meeting.

A lie.

"He was going to tell you everything."

Mark looked down.

"Why didn't he?"

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Because he never arrived."

The Woman Who Controlled Everything

Mark returned home that night with a storm inside him.

Everything he believed was changing.

His mother.

His father.

His family.

All of it.

Rosie noticed immediately.

"Daddy?"

Mark forced a smile.

"I'm okay."

Children always knew.

"No you're not."

He looked at her.

"Why?"

Rosie hugged her stuffed rabbit.

"Your face is sad."

Mark sat beside her.

He wanted to tell her everything.

But she was four.

She didn't need to carry adult pain.

Instead, he hugged her.

"Sometimes people make bad choices."

Rosie thought about it.

"Like Aunt Bethany?"

Mark was silent.

Then:

"Yes."

Eleanor’s Warning

The next morning, Eleanor appeared at Mark's house.

Not angry.

Afraid.

That frightened him more.

"You met him."

Mark stared.

"Adrian?"

Eleanor said nothing.

That was enough.

"You knew."

Her eyes filled slightly.

"Mark..."

"No."

His voice hardened.

"Not this time."

She looked at him.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

"I understand perfectly."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"If you continue searching, you won't just destroy Bethany."

A pause.

"You will destroy everything."

Mark looked at her.

"Everything?"

Eleanor lowered her voice.

"The Carter family was built on secrets."

Mark answered:

"Then maybe it deserves to fall."

The Final Discovery

That night, Thomas sent another file.

A photograph.

A security image.

From twenty years ago.

The night William died.

Mark opened it.

His breathing stopped.

The image showed a car outside the church parking lot.

And standing beside it...

Was Eleanor Carter.

His mother.

Mark stared at the screen.

Unable to move.

Unable to think.

The woman who raised him.

The woman who protected Bethany.

The woman who always told him family mattered.

Was standing at the scene where his father died.

The phone rang.

Unknown number.

Mark answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

"Now you understand."

Mark froze.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"I was there the night your father died."

The voice lowered.

"And I saw who killed him."

The call ended.

Mark stood alone in the dark.

Because the battle for Rosie had uncovered something much bigger.

A hidden brother.

A murdered father.

A mother’s betrayal.

And a family built on lies.

The Carter empire was not about to collapse because of money.

It was collapsing because the truth had finally come home.
