Chapter 11 — The Woman Behind Vanessa

Chapter 11 — The Woman Behind Vanessa
The photograph wouldn't leave Emily's mind.
I know who my father is.
Five words written in the careful handwriting of a twelve-year-old boy.
Five words that had turned every certainty Emily had left into another question.
She sat in the back of Raymond's car as they sped toward the northern highway.
Ethan was somewhere ahead of them.
Victoria had taken him.
The court had been compromised.
And now Emily had learned that Preston Whitmore—the man who had spent twelve years pretending to be part of her son's life—might never have been Ethan's father.
But one question was louder than all the others.
Who was?
“Raymond.”
He glanced at her through the mirror.
“What?”
“You know.”
He didn't answer.
Emily's voice hardened.
“You know who Ethan's father is.”
Raymond kept his eyes on the road.
“I have suspicions.”
“That's not what I asked.”
Silence.
“Raymond.”
He exhaled.
“Your mother believed the father was dead.”
Emily's heart sank.
“Was he?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I am trying to keep you alive.”
“I don't need that answer anymore.”
Emily leaned forward.
“I need the truth.”
Raymond finally looked at her.
“The name in the original file was Gabriel Cross.”
Emily froze.
“Cross?”
“Yes.”
“Vanessa Cross?”
Raymond nodded.
“Her family.”
Emily stared through the window.
Vanessa.
Preston's mistress.
The woman who had spent months humiliating her.
The woman who had believed Emily was nothing more than an obstacle.
The woman who had helped them find Ethan.
Emily's stomach tightened.
“Vanessa's father?”
“Gabriel.”
“Where is he?”
Raymond's expression changed.
“That's the problem.”
“What?”
“Gabriel Cross died eleven years ago.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Eleven years.
One year before she found out Ethan was supposedly dead.
One year before her mother disappeared.
One year before the Whitmores thought they had erased the evidence.
“But if Gabriel was Ethan's father…”
Raymond nodded.
“Then Vanessa is Ethan's half-sister.”
Emily stared at him.
The world seemed to become very quiet.
Vanessa had been standing on the wrong side of the war without knowing she was related to the boy everyone was fighting over.
And suddenly Emily remembered Vanessa's face when she saw Ethan.
The shock.
The hesitation.
The way she had protected him.
Vanessa hadn't merely changed sides.
She had recognized something.
The car's phone rang.
Raymond answered.
“Talk.”
A security officer spoke rapidly.
Raymond's face darkened.
“Where?”
A pause.
“Send the coordinates.”
He hung up.
Emily sat forward.
“What happened?”
“They found Victoria's car.”
“Where?”
“Twenty miles from the border.”
“Ethan?”
“No.”
Emily's heart dropped.
“What about Victoria?”
“They found her.”
“Alive?”
Raymond hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Then where is my son?”
“We don't know.”
Emily stared ahead.
The highway seemed endless.
“Then we find him.”
Raymond nodded.
But neither of them noticed the black SUV following them.
Not yet.
Vanessa Cross stood inside an empty warehouse three hours later.
Her hands were shaking.
Across from her sat an elderly man named Arthur Bell.
He had been her father's lawyer.
Her father's friend.
And, according to the file she had just read, the last person to speak with Gabriel Cross before his death.
Vanessa threw the folder onto the table.
“You knew.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Knew what?”
“About Ethan.”
Arthur didn't answer.
“You knew my father had another child.”
Still nothing.
“You knew he was alive.”
Arthur slowly removed his glasses.
“Yes.”
Vanessa's eyes filled with rage.
“You let me believe Emily destroyed my family.”
“I never told you that.”
“Your silence did.”
Arthur looked down.
“Your father wanted you protected.”
“From what?”
“The truth.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.”
Arthur's expression softened.
“Your father loved you.”
“Then why did he leave me nothing?”
“He left you a warning.”
“What warning?”
Arthur reached into a drawer.
He removed an envelope.
Vanessa recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her father's.
She opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Vanessa,
If you are reading this, then I am gone.
There is something I could never tell you while I was alive.
You have a brother.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
She continued.
His name is Ethan.
Her hands began trembling.
His mother is Emily Saint Claire.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.”
Arthur said nothing.
Vanessa read the final paragraph.
If the Whitmores ever learn the truth, they will use you to reach him. Do not trust Preston. Do not trust his mother. And whatever you do, never let them convince you that Ethan belongs to them.
The letter ended with one sentence.
He is the only family you have left.
Vanessa lowered the paper.
“My father knew.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your father believed the Whitmores were watching you.”
Vanessa looked up.
“Were they?”
Arthur nodded.
“They were.”
Her face went pale.
“How long?”
“Since you were eighteen.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“All those years…”
“They were using you.”
“For what?”
Arthur's answer was quiet.
“To get close to Emily.”
The truth hit Vanessa harder than she expected.
Her relationship with Preston.
The expensive gifts.
The sudden invitations.
The private dinners.
The moments Preston told her Emily was unstable.
The stories about Emily being manipulative.
The way Preston had encouraged Vanessa to provoke her.
None of it had been accidental.
She hadn't seduced a married man because she loved him.
She had been positioned beside him.
Used as a weapon.
Vanessa sat down.
“What does Preston know?”
Arthur shook his head.
“Not everything.”
“What does his mother know?”
“Enough.”
“What does Emily know?”
“Not enough.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Then I need to find her.”
Emily arrived at the border safe house just before midnight.
Victoria was waiting.
Her clothes were torn.
Blood stained her sleeve.
But she was alive.
Emily rushed toward her.
“Where is Ethan?”
Victoria looked at her.
“He left.”
Emily's heart stopped.
“What?”
“He wouldn't stay.”
“Where did he go?”
“He said he had to find someone.”
“Who?”
Victoria hesitated.
Then:
“Vanessa.”
Emily froze.
“Why?”
“Because Ethan knows she's his sister.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“How?”
“Someone told him.”
“Who?”
Victoria looked at Raymond.
Then back at Emily.
“Preston.”
Emily's stomach dropped.
“He told Ethan?”
“He told him before the attack.”
“Why?”
“Because Preston knew the Whitmores were coming for him.”
Victoria looked toward the window.
“He wanted Ethan to have someone else to trust.”
Emily swallowed.
“Where would Ethan go?”
Victoria handed her a folded piece of paper.
“His father's old house.”
Emily opened it.
The address belonged to Gabriel Cross.
“Vanessa knows this place?”
“She grew up there.”
Emily stared at the address.
“Then that's where we're going.”
The old Cross residence stood on a hill overlooking the river.
The house was dark.
No cars.
No lights.
Emily entered with Raymond.
“Ethan?”
Nothing.
They searched the first floor.
Empty.
The kitchen.
Empty.
The library.
Empty.
Then Emily heard a sound upstairs.
A door opening.
She ran.
“Ethan!”
A figure appeared at the end of the hallway.
Vanessa.
She was holding a gun.
Emily stopped.
Raymond immediately raised his weapon.
“Put it down.”
Vanessa's eyes were fixed on Emily.
“I don't want to hurt you.”
“Where is Ethan?”
Vanessa's face broke.
“He's here.”
Emily's heart pounded.
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“Show me.”
Vanessa lowered the weapon.
“Before I do, you need to know something.”
Emily took a step forward.
“What?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I'm Ethan's sister.”
Emily already knew.
But hearing it aloud made everything real.
Vanessa continued.
“Gabriel Cross was my father.”
Emily looked at her.
“And Ethan's.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then Emily asked:
“Why did you hate me?”
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Because I was told you destroyed my family.”
“By whom?”
“Preston.”
Emily's expression hardened.
“He lied to you.”
“Yes.”
“And you believed him.”
“I was young.”
“So was I.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I know.”
Emily stepped closer.
“You hurt me.”
“I know.”
“You humiliated me.”
“I know.”
“You helped him.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.”
Emily looked at the woman who had once been her greatest enemy.
And for the first time, she saw not a rival.
But another victim.
“What changed?”
Vanessa whispered:
“I met Ethan.”
A small voice came from behind the door.
“Mom?”
Emily turned.
Ethan stepped into the hallway.
She ran to him.
He threw his arms around her.
“I knew you'd come.”
Emily held him tightly.
“I always will.”
Vanessa watched them.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Ethan looked at her.
“You came too.”
Vanessa smiled.
“I told you I would.”
Emily looked between them.
“You two have already spoken?”
Ethan nodded.
“She told me about Dad.”
Emily froze.
“What did she tell you?”
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Emily.
“That he loved me.”
Emily swallowed.
“Did he?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.”
Ethan looked down.
“Then why did he let them take me?”
No one answered.
Finally, Vanessa said:
“He was afraid.”
Ethan frowned.
“Of what?”
“Your grandfather.”
Emily's eyes narrowed.
“Gabriel feared my grandfather?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Your grandfather threatened him.”
“Why?”
“Because Gabriel discovered the M-17 project.”
Emily felt a chill.
“What did he discover?”
Vanessa looked at Raymond.
Raymond's face had gone pale.
“Tell me.”
Vanessa whispered:
“He discovered that M-17 wasn't an experiment.”
“What was it?”
“A genetic program.”
Emily stared.
“For what?”
“To identify children capable of inheriting the Saint Claire biological trust.”
Emily frowned.
“That sounds impossible.”
“It wasn't.”
Vanessa opened a folder.
Inside were old medical records.
Ethan's records.
Emily recognized the signature.
Her father's.
But beneath it was another name.
Dr. Charles Whitmore.
Emily's stomach turned.
“They tested him?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before he was born.”
Emily stared.
“That's impossible.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“Your pregnancy wasn't accidental.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“What?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Your grandfather planned it.”
Emily stepped backward.
“No.”
“He selected Gabriel.”
Emily's face went pale.
“What are you saying?”
Vanessa's voice broke.
“You were never supposed to marry Preston.”
Emily stared.
“You were supposed to have Ethan.”
The room went silent.
Raymond closed his eyes.
Emily turned toward him.
“You knew.”
He didn't answer.
“Raymond.”
He whispered:
“Yes.”
Emily's knees nearly gave out.
Her entire life had been constructed around a secret.
Her marriage.
Her pregnancy.
Her son's birth.
The people she trusted.
The people she hated.
All of it had been manipulated.
But there was one question left.
“Why me?”
Vanessa opened the final page.
At the bottom was a photograph.
A young Emily.
Eighteen years old.
Standing beside Gabriel Cross.
Emily stared.
“I don't remember this.”
“You weren't supposed to.”
Raymond stepped forward.
“You were drugged.”
Emily looked at him.
“What?”
“Your grandfather wanted the meeting erased from your memory.”
Emily's breathing became shallow.
“What happened that night?”
No one answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Mom?”
She looked at him.
“What's wrong?”
Emily couldn't answer.
Because suddenly she remembered something.
A room.
A window.
Rain.
A man's voice.
Gabriel.
And one sentence.
If you ever have a son, I'll protect him.
Emily covered her mouth.
She remembered.
Not everything.
But enough.
She had known Gabriel.
Before Preston.
Before her marriage.
Before Ethan.
She had loved him.
And then someone had erased him from her memory.
A car screeched outside.
Raymond rushed to the window.
“Get down!”
Gunfire shattered the glass.
Emily grabbed Ethan.
Vanessa pulled them toward the hallway.
“Basement!”
They ran.
Bullets tore through the walls.
Raymond fired back.
“Move!”
They reached the basement.
Vanessa opened a hidden door.
A tunnel waited behind it.
Emily stared.
“Where does this go?”
“To the river.”
They ran.
Behind them, men stormed into the house.
A voice echoed upstairs.
“Find the boy!”
Emily held Ethan's hand.
He was crying.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Are they going to take me again?”
Emily stopped.
She knelt in front of him.
“No.”
“Promise?”
She touched his face.
“I promise.”
Vanessa stood beside them.
“You're not alone anymore.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You're my sister.”
Vanessa smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
Emily looked at both of them.
Her son.
Her son's sister.
Two children connected by a man she had once loved and forgotten.
Then a voice echoed from the tunnel behind them.
“Emily.”
She froze.
It was Preston.
He emerged from the darkness.
Blood stained his shirt.
His face was pale.
He could barely stand.
Emily stared.
“How did you find us?”
Preston looked at Ethan.
Then at Vanessa.
“I followed them.”
“Who?”
“My mother.”
Emily's heart sank.
“What did she do?”
Preston's voice cracked.
“She found Gabriel.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“Gabriel is alive?”
Preston nodded.
“He was never dead.”
Emily stared.
“Where is he?”
Preston looked directly at her.
“He's the one who has been protecting Ethan.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“Where?”
Preston took a breath.
“He's waiting for you.”
Emily couldn't move.
Twelve years of grief had just been ripped open.
The man she thought was dead.
The father of her child.
The man her grandfather had erased from her memory.
Alive.
Waiting.
Then Preston whispered the words that changed everything.
“But Emily…”
She looked at him.
“Gabriel isn't the only person who survived that night.”
Preston glanced toward the tunnel entrance.
“There was another witness.”
“Who?”
His face turned pale.
“Your father.”
A gunshot echoed above them.
May you like
Everyone froze.
And somewhere in the darkness, someone began walking down the stairs.
