Chapter 14 — The Truth Preston Never Wanted Revealed

Chapter 14 — The Truth Preston Never Wanted Revealed
The fire burned until dawn.
By sunrise, the Saint Claire Medical Center was nothing but a skeleton of blackened steel and shattered glass.
Smoke drifted across the city.
Sirens screamed in the distance.
Helicopters circled overhead.
And beneath the chaos, Emily stood beside an ambulance with Ethan wrapped in a gray blanket.
She couldn't stop staring at the tiny silver device in her hand.
The memory key.
Raymond had refused to touch it.
Gabriel had refused to explain it.
And Ethan had no memory of where he got it.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
Until Preston spoke.
“It came from me.”
Emily turned.
Preston was sitting on the back step of an ambulance.
His face was bruised.
Blood stained the collar of his shirt.
One wrist was handcuffed to a metal rail.
Two federal agents stood nearby.
Emily stared at him.
“What did you say?”
Preston looked at the silver device.
“I gave it to Ethan.”
Raymond immediately stepped forward.
“You said you didn't know about the device.”
“I lied.”
Emily's expression hardened.
“You're going to tell me everything.”
Preston looked at her.
“I will.”
“No more lies.”
“No more.”
Emily walked closer.
“Then start with the beginning.”
Preston lowered his eyes.
“The night Ethan was taken.”
Twelve years earlier.
Emily had been twenty years old.
She had been pregnant.
Terrified.
And completely unaware that three powerful families were already fighting over her unborn child.
Preston remembered that night differently.
He remembered the rain.
The hospital corridor.
His father shouting.
His mother crying.
And Emily lying unconscious in a private room.
He had been told Ethan was dying.
He had been told Gabriel Cross was responsible.
He had been told Emily would never survive the birth.
Every adult around him had been lying.
But Preston had believed them.
He was young.
Afraid.
And desperate to save the woman he loved.
Then his mother gave him an envelope.
“Take this to the Whitmore estate.”
He did.
Inside was a medical record.
Ethan Saint Claire — deceased.
But Preston had already seen the baby.
He knew Ethan was alive.
That was the first lie he couldn't explain.
“I knew Ethan was alive,” Preston said.
Emily stared at him.
“Then why did you let me believe he was dead?”
“Because my mother threatened you.”
Emily's jaw tightened.
“She told me she would destroy you if I told you.”
“You believed her?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she had already arranged the accident that killed your mother.”
Emily went still.
“My mother?”
Preston nodded.
“She wasn't killed in an accident.”
Emily's breath caught.
“What are you saying?”
“Your mother's car was sabotaged.”
Raymond closed his eyes.
Emily turned toward him.
“You knew.”
Raymond didn't answer.
Preston continued.
“Your grandfather ordered it.”
Emily's face went pale.
“Why?”
“Because your mother wanted to expose M-17.”
The morning sun rose higher.
Emily couldn't speak.
She looked at Preston.
“You knew all these years.”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
“I was afraid.”
“You were always afraid.”
“Yes.”
“And I paid the price.”
Preston nodded.
“I know.”
Emily stepped closer.
“You married me while knowing what your family had done.”
“Yes.”
“You slept beside me while knowing my son was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me mourn him.”
Preston's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Emily slapped him.
The sound echoed across the parking lot.
No one moved.
Preston turned his face back slowly.
“I deserved that.”
“You deserved worse.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Preston swallowed.
“Because I thought I could fix it.”
Emily laughed bitterly.
“You?”
“I thought I could become powerful enough to take Ethan back.”
“But you never did.”
“No.”
“You chose your family.”
“At first.”
“And later?”
Preston looked at her.
“Later, I chose you.”
Emily shook her head.
“Too late.”
“I know.”
Raymond stepped forward.
“What did you give Ethan?”
Preston looked at him.
“The memory key.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew my mother was coming for him.”
“When?”
“Before the custody hearing.”
Raymond's eyes narrowed.
“Why didn't you tell us?”
“Because I wasn't sure who I could trust.”
“You could have trusted Emily.”
“I knew that.”
“Then why didn't you?”
Preston looked at Emily.
“Because if I told her the truth, she would come after my family.”
Emily's voice was cold.
“Good.”
Preston nodded.
“I knew you would.”
“Then you should have told me.”
“Yes.”
“But you didn't.”
“No.”
“What did the key contain?”
Preston looked toward the ruins.
“Your grandfather's memories.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
“The device doesn't store ordinary files.”
Raymond understood first.
“It's a neural archive.”
Preston nodded.
“Your grandfather designed it to record memories.”
Emily stared at the device.
“Whose memories?”
“His.”
“And why did he give them to Ethan?”
Preston's face changed.
“He didn't.”
Emily frowned.
“Then who?”
Preston looked toward Gabriel.
Gabriel stepped closer.
“I did.”
Emily turned.
Gabriel's voice was quiet.
“Your grandfather forced me to help create the device.”
“Why would you give it to Ethan?”
“Because I knew one day he would need the truth.”
Emily looked at Ethan.
“And you put it inside his possession?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The night he disappeared.”
Emily's heart pounded.
“You knew he would remember?”
“No.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“I hoped he would.”
A federal agent approached.
“Mrs. Saint Claire.”
Emily turned.
“The Department of Justice wants everyone moved to a secure location.”
“No.”
“Mrs. Saint Claire—”
“No.”
She looked at Ethan.
“He isn't going anywhere without me.”
The agent glanced at Raymond.
“Mr. Saint Claire?”
Raymond stepped forward.
“You can either protect us or arrest us.”
The agent sighed.
“We're trying to protect you.”
“Then start by telling us who ordered the attack.”
The agent hesitated.
“We don't know.”
Raymond laughed.
“You know exactly who.”
He pointed toward the ruins.
“The same people who have controlled this city for twenty years.”
The agent lowered his voice.
“We found something inside the debris.”
“What?”
“A body.”
Emily froze.
“Whose?”
“We don't know.”
Preston suddenly stood.
“What did you find?”
The agent looked at him.
“Male.”
“Age?”
“Approximately seventy.”
Preston's face went pale.
Emily looked at him.
“Your grandfather?”
Preston didn't answer.
The agent continued.
“We're waiting for DNA confirmation.”
Then another agent came running.
“Sir!”
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
“What kind?”
“The body isn't there anymore.”
Silence.
“What?”
“The morgue was secured.”
“How could it disappear?”
The agent looked terrified.
“Someone removed it.”
Emily looked at Raymond.
Raymond whispered:
“He's alive.”
Three hours later, they were moved to a secure government facility.
The building had no windows.
No identifying signs.
No public entrance.
Emily sat in an interrogation room with Ethan beside her.
Across the table sat a federal investigator named Marcus Hale.
He placed a file down.
“We need to talk about Preston.”
Emily folded her arms.
“What about him?”
“He has confessed to multiple crimes.”
“Good.”
“He claims he can identify the people behind M-17.”
“Then listen to him.”
“We have.”
Marcus opened the file.
“His testimony is extraordinary.”
Emily frowned.
“How?”
“He says your grandfather wasn't the mastermind.”
She froze.
“What?”
“He says someone else financed the project.”
“Who?”
Marcus slid a photograph across the table.
Emily looked at it.
Her heart stopped.
The photograph showed three men standing together.
Her grandfather.
Charles Whitmore.
And a third man.
Emily recognized him.
The hospital chairman.
The man who had publicly defended her family for years.
Dr. Adrian Vale.
“He's dead,” Emily whispered.
Marcus nodded.
“Officially.”
Emily stared at the photograph.
“Then who is running the project?”
Marcus leaned forward.
“We believe he is.”
The door opened.
Preston entered under guard.
Emily stared at him.
“You knew.”
Preston nodded.
“Yes.”
“You knew Adrian Vale was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
“I was trying to get proof.”
Emily laughed.
“That's your excuse for everything.”
Preston sat.
“He was the person who ordered Ethan's transfer.”
Emily's expression changed.
“Why?”
“Because he believed Ethan's blood could cure the mutation.”
“And my grandfather?”
“Your grandfather wanted to control the cure.”
“And Charles Whitmore?”
“He wanted to sell it.”
Emily looked at him.
“And you?”
Preston's eyes dropped.
“I wanted you.”
Silence.
Emily looked away.
Preston continued.
“I thought if I protected you, you would eventually forgive me.”
“You don't get to decide that.”
“I know.”
“You lost that right twelve years ago.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
Preston looked directly at her.
“Because there's one truth I never told you.”
Emily's expression hardened.
“What?”
“Ethan wasn't the only child.”
She froze.
“What?”
Preston swallowed.
“There was another baby.”
Emily's heart stopped.
“Whose?”
“Yours.”
The room went silent.
Emily couldn't breathe.
“What are you talking about?”
Preston reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a photograph.
Two newborn babies.
Side by side.
One had a small Saint Claire bracelet.
The other had a black identification tag.
Emily stared.
“No.”
Preston whispered:
“You gave birth to twins.”
Emily's world disappeared.
“I had one baby.”
“No.”
“I remember.”
“You were told one survived.”
Emily's hands began shaking.
“Where is the other?”
Preston looked at Ethan.
“That's what everyone has been trying to find.”
Emily stood.
“Where?”
Preston's face was full of regret.
“Your grandfather took the other baby.”
“Why?”
“Because that child carried a different genetic marker.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“Is the baby alive?”
Preston didn't answer.
Emily grabbed his shirt.
“Is my child alive?”
Preston looked at her.
“Yes.”
Emily's knees nearly gave out.
“Where?”
Before he could answer, every light in the building went out.
The security alarms began screaming.
Doors slammed.
People shouted in the hallway.
Marcus pulled his weapon.
“Stay down!”
Emily grabbed Ethan.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
The same voice she had heard in the laboratory.
Her grandfather.
“Emily.”
She froze.
“You have spent your entire life searching for the wrong child.”
The lights flickered.
A screen turned on.
An old video appeared.
Her grandfather was standing beside a hospital crib.
Inside was a newborn baby.
Emily covered her mouth.
The baby's face was visible.
A tiny Saint Claire bracelet rested around one wrist.
Then her grandfather looked into the camera.
“This child is the real M-17.”
The screen changed.
The baby was older.
A toddler.
A child.
Then a teenager.
Emily stared.
She recognized the face.
Her heart stopped.
Because the person in the final photograph was standing beside her grandfather.
Alive.
Older.
And staring directly into the camera.
It was a girl.
Emily's daughter.
Her missing twin.
The child she had been told never existed.
The screen went black.
Ethan whispered:
“Mom?”
Emily couldn't answer.
Then the speaker crackled again.
Her grandfather's final message came through.
“Come find your daughter.”
A pause.
“And bring Ethan.”
The building shook.
Somewhere below them, an explosion erupted.
Marcus shouted:
“Move!”
Emily grabbed Ethan's hand.
Preston grabbed hers.
For once, she didn't pull away.
They ran.
But as the doors opened, Emily looked back at the black screen.
She finally understood the true purpose of M-17.
It had never been about one child.
It had always been about two.
And while everyone had spent twelve years searching for Ethan...
The other child had been growing up in the hands of the one man Emily had spent her entire life believing was dead.
Her grandfather had not lost the war.
He had been waiting.
And now he had finally revealed the one secret Emily could never have prepared herself to hear.

Her daughter was alive.
And she was coming for her.
