Chapter 10 — The Woman Behind Vanessa

Chapter 10 — The Woman Behind Vanessa

Emily knew Vanessa had never been the mastermind.

She had known it from the beginning.

Vanessa was cruel.

Ambitious.

Careless.

But she was too emotional to build something this complicated.

The forged medical records.

The fraudulent court order.

The hidden accounts.

The custody plan.

The transfer of three hundred million dollars.

Those things required patience.

Lawyers.

Doctors.

Bankers.

People who knew how to make illegal things look legitimate.

Vanessa had the appetite for power.

But someone else had built the table.

Emily sat in Raymond's conference room with the evidence spread across the desk.

One name appeared again and again.

Victoria Whitmore.

Preston's mother.

The woman Emily had once called Mother.

The woman who had smiled beside her at the wedding.

The woman who had held Emily's hands and promised:

“Welcome to the family.”

Emily stared at the signature.

“You said she helped draft the original agreement.”

Raymond nodded.

“She did.”

“Then why did she pretend she knew nothing?”

“Because she wanted you to underestimate her.”

Emily looked up.

“Where is she now?”

Raymond's answer came quietly.

“Inside Whitmore House.”

Victoria had never left.

Even after Preston's accounts were frozen.

Even after the board removed him from executive authority.

Even after lawyers began investigating the family.

She remained inside the mansion.

As if the house itself belonged to her.

As if the Whitmore name still protected her.

Emily understood why.

People like Victoria didn't run when their world began collapsing.

They waited.

They expected everyone else to come begging.

So Emily decided to visit her.

At 4:30 p.m., Emily entered Whitmore House.

No announcement.

No warning.

Security tried to stop her.

Raymond stepped forward.

“Move.”

They moved.

Emily walked through the entrance.

The same marble floor.

The same staircase.

The same portraits.

But now she noticed things she had never seen before.

The portraits weren't simply family photographs.

They were a history of ownership.

Every generation had preserved the Whitmore name.

Every marriage had expanded the family fortune.

Every woman who married into the family disappeared from the records.

Emily stopped beneath one portrait.

A young woman stood beside a Whitmore patriarch.

Her name was written below.

Eleanor Whitmore.

Emily frowned.

“Who is she?”

Raymond looked.

“Preston's great-grandmother.”

“What happened to her?”

Raymond's expression hardened.

“She died young.”

“How?”

“Officially?”

“Yes.”

“Suicide.”

Emily stared at the portrait.

“And unofficially?”

Raymond didn't answer.

She understood.

The Whitmores had been doing this for generations.

Women married into the family.

Assets moved.

Names disappeared.

Children became leverage.

Emily looked toward the staircase.

“And Victoria?”

“She learned from them.”

They found Victoria in the drawing room.

She was drinking tea.

Perfectly composed.

She didn't stand when Emily entered.

“Emily.”

Emily stopped.

“You knew.”

Victoria smiled.

“Knew what?”

“The entire plan.”

Victoria lifted her cup.

“Which plan?”

“The custody plan.”

No reaction.

“The forged medical records.”

Nothing.

“The money transfer.”

Still nothing.

“The marriage agreement.”

Victoria finally looked at her.

“You've been digging.”

Emily walked closer.

“You tried to take my child.”

Victoria sighed.

“Don't be dramatic.”

“You forged evidence.”

“Your husband did.”

“You funded it.”

“No.”

“You signed the agreement.”

Victoria's smile disappeared.

“That was years ago.”

“You planned everything.”

Victoria put down her cup.

“No.”

She looked directly at Emily.

“We planned everything.”

Emily felt a chill.

“Who is we?”

Victoria didn't answer.

Raymond stepped forward.

“Where is Richard?”

Victoria's face changed.

Only slightly.

But Emily saw it.

Fear.

For the first time.

Victoria was afraid.

“Who told you that name?”

Raymond's voice was cold.

“Your files.”

Victoria stood.

“You have no idea what you're dealing with.”

Emily smiled faintly.

“I've heard that before.”

Victoria looked at her.

“Then perhaps you should listen this time.”

“No.”

Emily stepped closer.

“I've listened to your family for six years.”

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

“And look where it got you.”

Emily's voice remained calm.

“Pregnant.”

Victoria's face tightened.

“Used.”

Emily continued.

“Deceived.”

Victoria said nothing.

“And still standing.”

Victoria walked toward the fireplace.

“You think you're winning because Raymond froze a few accounts?”

Emily said nothing.

“You think Preston's little scandal means the Whitmore family is finished?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Victoria smiled.

“Because it isn't.”

She reached into a drawer.

Pulled out a file.

And tossed it onto the table.

Emily opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Vanessa.

Preston.

Victoria.

And another woman.

Emily recognized her.

Caroline Bell.

The assistant who had notarized the forged documents.

Emily stared.

“They all worked together.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed to Vanessa.

“She worked for me.”

Emily looked up.

“Vanessa?”

“She was never Preston's mistress first.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

Victoria's voice was calm.

“I introduced them.”

Emily stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because Preston was becoming difficult.”

“Difficult?”

“He was beginning to question the plan.”

“What plan?”

“The marriage.”

Emily's heart tightened.

Victoria continued.

“He was supposed to marry you, secure your trust position, and produce an heir.”

Emily stared.

“You're talking about my child.”

“Yes.”

“Like a business asset.”

Victoria shrugged.

“In this family, everything is an asset.”

Emily felt sick.

“And Vanessa?”

“She was insurance.”

“Against what?”

“Against you.”

Victoria walked toward her.

“You were too independent.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“I was a quiet woman.”

“That made you more dangerous.”

“Why?”

“Because quiet people observe.”

Victoria looked into her eyes.

“You noticed the accounts.”

“You noticed Preston's behavior.”

“You noticed the changes in your medical records.”

“And eventually, you would have discovered the trust.”

Emily's voice hardened.

“So Vanessa was supposed to provoke me.”

“Yes.”

“Make me look unstable.”

“Yes.”

“Make Preston look like the victim.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

Victoria smiled.

“Your child would be born into a legal structure that excluded you.”

Emily's stomach turned.

“Where was Preston in all of this?”

Victoria sighed.

“My son was weak.”

Emily stared.

“You call him weak?”

“He wanted the money without paying the price.”

“What price?”

“Obedience.”

Victoria's voice became colder.

“He wanted Vanessa.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

“Preston fell in love with her.”

“So the affair was real.”

“Oh, yes.”

Victoria smiled.

“That was the problem.”

Emily understood.

“You didn't care about Vanessa.”

“No.”

“You only needed her.”

“Yes.”

“And Preston actually cared about her.”

Victoria nodded.

“Which made him unreliable.”

Emily stared.

“So you used Vanessa to control Preston too.”

Victoria smiled.

“Now you're beginning to understand.”

Emily opened another file.

Inside was a payment schedule.

Millions transferred to Vanessa over five years.

Not from Preston.

From Victoria.

Emily looked at the dates.

The first payment had occurred before Vanessa met Preston.

Emily's eyes widened.

“She was working for you before they even met.”

“Yes.”

“Why would she agree?”

Victoria smiled.

“Because I promised her something.”

“What?”

“Everything she wanted.”

Emily looked at the final payment.

The amount was enormous.

“What did she get?”

Victoria's expression changed.

“She was promised Preston.”

Emily stared.

“You promised her my husband.”

“No.”

Victoria corrected her.

“I promised her the Whitmore name.”

A door opened behind them.

Vanessa walked in.

She stopped when she saw Emily.

For once, there was no smile.

No confidence.

Only fear.

“Victoria.”

Victoria didn't turn.

“You're late.”

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“You told me she wouldn't find out.”

Victoria's expression hardened.

“You're becoming emotional.”

Vanessa's voice rose.

“You said the plan was finished.”

“It isn't.”

“You said Preston would sign.”

“He did.”

“You said Emily would be declared unstable.”

“She almost was.”

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“You lied to me.”

Victoria turned.

“I didn't lie.”

“You promised me the Whitmore estate.”

“I promised you a position.”

“After Preston dies?”

Silence.

Emily's eyes widened.

Vanessa realized what she had said.

Victoria's face became cold.

“Leave.”

Vanessa didn't move.

“You told me he wouldn't survive the scandal.”

Emily stared.

“What did she mean?”

Victoria looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“I didn't mean—”

“What did she mean?”

Emily's voice cut through the room.

Vanessa looked at her.

Then at Victoria.

Then whispered:

“Your husband was never supposed to make it this far.”

Silence.

Emily felt her blood run cold.

“Who planned to kill Preston?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“You just said—”

“I don't know!”

Victoria slapped her.

Vanessa stumbled.

The room went silent.

Emily stared at Victoria.

There it was.

The woman behind the mistress.

Not just manipulative.

Not just ruthless.

Dangerous.

Victoria looked at Emily.

“You should leave.”

Emily smiled.

“No.”

Victoria frowned.

“You don't understand.”

Emily raised her phone.

“I recorded everything.”

Victoria's face changed.

Emily's smile disappeared.

“And now I understand perfectly.”

Raymond immediately stepped forward.

“Emily.”

She nodded.

“It's recording.”

Victoria lunged.

Security moved between them.

Vanessa screamed.

“Don't touch her!”

Victoria looked at Vanessa.

“Why are you protecting her?”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she was right.”

Victoria froze.

“About what?”

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“She told me you would sacrifice anyone.”

Victoria said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“Even me.”

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“You helped her.”

“Yes.”

“You hurt me.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about me.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to take my baby.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Because I thought she would make me powerful.”

Emily stared.

“Who?”

“Victoria.”

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“She promised me the Whitmore name.”

“And Preston?”

“She promised me him.”

Emily looked at Victoria.

“And what did she promise Preston?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Control.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

Raymond took the evidence.

“Vanessa, you have a choice.”

She looked at him.

“What choice?”

“You cooperate.”

Victoria laughed.

“You think she'll protect you?”

Vanessa looked at her.

Then back at Raymond.

“I know what she does to people who disappoint her.”

Raymond said nothing.

Vanessa nodded.

“I'll cooperate.”

Victoria's face went white.

“Vanessa.”

The younger woman shook her head.

“No.”

“You owe me everything.”

“I already gave you everything.”

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“And you still wanted more.”

That night, Vanessa gave investigators a full statement.

She described the plan.

The meetings.

The payments.

The forged records.

The custody strategy.

The transfer of assets.

And finally—

the name of the person who had financed everything.

It wasn't Victoria.

It wasn't Preston.

It wasn't Richard.

It was someone Emily had never suspected.

Thomas Whitmore.

Preston's grandfather.

A man officially declared dead twelve years earlier.

Emily stared at the document.

“That's impossible.”

Raymond looked at her.

“Apparently not.”

“He died.”

“Yes.”

“Then how did he authorize payments?”

Raymond's face darkened.

“That is what we're going to find out.”

At midnight, Emily stood alone outside the hospital room.

Her baby moved beneath her hand.

She looked through the window.

The city stretched endlessly below.

She had thought Preston was the enemy.

Then Vanessa.

Then Victoria.

Then Richard.

Now another dead man had entered the story.

Her family's secrets seemed endless.

But Emily no longer felt helpless.

Every secret they revealed gave her another weapon.

Every lie they told created another piece of evidence.

And every person who betrayed her eventually left something behind.

A signature.

A payment.

A recording.

A name.

Emily looked down at the file Vanessa had given them.

At the bottom of the final page was one handwritten sentence.

The Whitmore family never loses an heir.

Emily read it twice.

Then turned the page.

On the back was another sentence.

Written in a different hand.

Unless the heir learns who actually owns the family.

Emily's heart stopped.

She immediately called Raymond.

“Uncle.”

He answered.

“What happened?”

“I found something.”

“What?”

Emily stared at the handwriting.

“The Whitmore family may not own Whitmore Holdings.”

Silence.

“Then who does?”

Emily looked toward the dark corridor.

“I don't know.”

She paused.

“But I think we're about to find out.”

Far away, inside an abandoned private estate, a man sat alone at a desk.

An old photograph lay before him.

Emily as a child.

Preston as a teenager.

Victoria beside them.

And behind all three—

a much younger Raymond Saint Claire.

The man picked up the phone.

“She's found Vanessa.”

A voice answered.

“And Victoria?”

“Exposed.”

“And Preston?”

“Finished.”

The man smiled.

“Good.”

He looked at Emily's photograph.

“Now she has nowhere left to run.”

The voice asked:

“Should we take the child?”

The man paused.

Then smiled.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Emily will come willingly.”

He placed the photograph face down.

“She still believes she's fighting for her child.”

A cold silence followed.

“She doesn't know yet that the child is the key to everything.”
