Chapter 6 — The Signature Emily Never Gave

Chapter 6 — The Signature Emily Never Gave
Emily knew something was wrong before she opened the first document.
The papers were too neat.
Too carefully organized.
Too complete.
There were tabs for everything.
Custody.
Guardianship.
Medical Authority.
Estate Transfer.
Beneficiary Change.
And finally—
Vanessa Cross.
Emily stared at the last tab.
Her fingers went cold.
“Uncle.”
Raymond stood across the table.
“Yes?”
“Why is her name here?”
He didn't answer immediately.
That frightened Emily more than any explanation could have.
She pulled the tab open.
The first page was a legal agreement.
At the top:
PRENATAL GUARDIANSHIP AND ASSET MANAGEMENT AGREEMENT
Emily read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
Then stopped.
“My child.”
Raymond nodded.
“They were preparing to remove your parental authority.”
Emily's eyes moved across the page.
Her name appeared repeatedly.
So did Preston's.
And beneath them—
Vanessa's.
She whispered:
“This says I agreed.”
Raymond looked at the signature.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Are you certain?”
Emily looked at him.
“I would remember signing something that gives Vanessa control over my child.”
Raymond's expression hardened.
“Then we have a problem.”
Emily touched the signature.
“That isn't mine.”
The document claimed Emily had voluntarily agreed to appoint Preston as sole legal guardian of the child if she became “emotionally incapacitated.”
The phrase made her stomach turn.
Emotionally incapacitated.
It was the same language used in the forged medical record.
The same language used by Preston whenever she disagreed with him.
The same language his family had used to describe her behind closed doors.
Emily read further.
If Preston became unable to serve as guardian—
Vanessa Cross would assume authority.
Emily stared at the page.
“Why Vanessa?”
Raymond's voice was quiet.
“Because she was never just the mistress.”
Emily looked up.
“What was she?”
“A designated successor.”
“To my child?”
“To your assets.”
Emily's breathing stopped.
Raymond opened another document.
“Look here.”
Emily read.
A trust.
Created four months before her pregnancy.
Beneficiary:
Child of Emily Whitmore.
Secondary beneficiary:
Vanessa Cross.
Trust manager:
Preston Whitmore.
Emily felt sick.
“They planned this before my baby was born.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Longer than we thought.”
Emily turned another page.
There was a medical authorization.
It supposedly allowed Preston to make medical decisions for her if she became incapable.
She stared at the signature.
Again, it looked almost perfect.
Almost.
“I never signed this.”
“I know.”
“How did they get it notarized?”
“That's what we're going to find out.”
She looked at the notary section.
A name.
Caroline Bell.
Emily recognized it.
“My husband's private assistant.”
Raymond nodded.
“Not a licensed notary.”
Emily looked at him.
“Then how is this valid?”
“It isn't.”
She exhaled.
“Then why does it exist?”
“To intimidate you.”
Raymond's answer was immediate.
“They wanted you to believe they already had the legal authority.”
Emily stared at the pages.
“They wanted me to surrender without a fight.”
“Yes.”
Another file contained a letter addressed to Emily.
She opened it.
The wording was cold.
Formal.
Almost clinical.
Mrs. Whitmore,
Due to concerns regarding your emotional stability and prenatal judgment, it is in the best interests of your unborn child that temporary guardianship be transferred to your husband.
Emily's eyes narrowed.
At the bottom was a signature.
A physician.
She knew him.
Dr. Samuel Grant.
The same doctor who had never treated her.
“This man has never seen me.”
Raymond looked at the document.
“Exactly.”
“He signed this?”
“Apparently.”
Emily shook her head.
“This is insane.”
“No.”
Raymond closed the folder.
“It's organized.”
Emily looked at him.
“That isn't better.”
“No.”
His voice became colder.
“It makes it worse.”
They continued through the files.
The deeper they went, the more disturbing the plan became.
There was a proposed change to the baby's birth certificate.
There was a draft custody order.
There was a prepared affidavit describing Emily as unstable.
There were witness statements from people she had never met.
One claimed Emily had threatened to harm herself.
Another claimed she had discussed abandoning the baby.
A third claimed she had become “obsessed with Raymond Saint Claire.”
Emily stared at the pages.
“I never said these things.”
“I know.”
“Who wrote them?”
“We'll find out.”
She looked at Raymond.
“They were building a person who doesn't exist.”
Raymond nodded.
“A version of you the court could hate.”
Then Emily found the document that made her hands shake.
It was a property transfer.
The assets were enormous.
Real estate.
Company shares.
Investment accounts.
Trust distributions.
Insurance policies.
All of them were being transferred.
Not to Preston.
Not directly.
To Vanessa.
Emily read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the final beneficiary schedule.
She whispered:
“How much?”
Raymond calculated.
“More than three hundred million.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Three hundred million dollars.
Transferred to the woman who had kicked her.
The woman who had humiliated her.
The woman Preston had claimed was simply an affair.
Emily looked at Raymond.
“This was the plan.”
“Yes.”
“They wanted me declared incompetent.”
“Yes.”
“Preston would control the child.”
“Yes.”
“And Vanessa would receive the assets.”
Raymond nodded.
“Exactly.”
Emily's expression hardened.
“But why would Preston give her everything?”
Raymond looked at the document.
“He wasn't.”
Emily frowned.
“What?”
“He was giving her a percentage.”
“Then who received the rest?”
Raymond turned the page.
Emily stared.
There was a second beneficiary.
A company.
Not a person.
BLACKWOOD STRATEGIC PARTNERS.
She didn't recognize the name.
“Who owns it?”
Raymond's eyes narrowed.
“We don't know yet.”
Emily felt a chill.
“Then this is bigger than Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
At that moment, Emily's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
Nothing.
Then a man's voice.
“You should stop looking.”
Emily froze.
“Who is this?”
“You've already been given more than enough.”
“Who are you?”
“You think Raymond can protect you.”
Emily looked at her uncle.
The voice continued.
“He can't.”
Emily's stomach tightened.
“Where is my husband?”
“He isn't your biggest problem.”
“Then who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“Someone your mother should have listened to.”
The call ended.
Emily stared at the phone.
Raymond immediately asked:
“What did he say?”
She repeated everything.
Raymond's face became grim.
“Did you recognize the voice?”
“No.”
He looked toward the door.
“Lock this floor.”
That afternoon, Raymond's investigators located the notary.
Caroline Bell.
She was brought into a conference room.
Emily sat across from her.
Caroline couldn't look her in the eyes.
“You notarized these documents?”
Caroline nodded.
“Yes.”
“Did I sign them?”
Silence.
Emily leaned forward.
“Caroline.”
“No.”
The woman began crying.
“No, you didn't.”
Raymond's investigators remained silent.
Emily asked:
“Then why did you notarize them?”
Caroline wiped her face.
“Mr. Whitmore told me to.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He said my brother would lose his job.”
Emily's expression softened slightly.
“Did Preston create the signature?”
Caroline nodded.
“He had someone copy it.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Do you have proof?”
Caroline reached into her bag.
She removed a small USB drive.
“He kept the original scans.”
Emily stared at it.
“Where?”
“His private office.”
Raymond took the drive.
“What's on it?”
“Everything.”
Two hours later, they accessed the files.
The screen filled with documents.
Original scans.
Drafts.
Emails.
Internal messages.
Then one email appeared.
From Preston.
Subject: Final Custody Package
Emily read it.
Once the medical assessment is filed, Emily will have no practical way to challenge the guardianship order.
Another line:
Vanessa's transfer should occur immediately after the birth.
Emily's hand tightened.
Then she saw the final sentence.
She cannot know about the Saint Claire trust.
Emily stared.
Raymond leaned closer.
“They knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That your mother left you control of the trust.”
Emily's heart pounded.
“How?”
Raymond looked at the email date.
“Someone told them.”
“Who?”
The next email answered.
The sender was hidden.
But the message contained a name.
R. Saint Claire.
Emily looked at Raymond.
His face went completely still.
“That can't be you.”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Raymond stared at the screen.
“There were only two Saint Claire men who had access to those records.”
Emily whispered:
“You said your brother was dead.”
“I know.”
The room became silent.
That night, Emily returned to her hospital room.
She couldn't sleep.
She kept thinking about the signature.
The signature she never gave.
The child they had already tried to control.
The money they had already assigned to Vanessa.
And the mysterious Saint Claire who seemed to know everything.
At 2:14 a.m., Emily felt movement.
The baby kicked.
She placed both hands over her stomach.
“I'm here.”
Another kick.
She smiled through tears.
“I won't let them take you.”
The door opened.
Raymond stepped inside.
His face was grim.
“We found the person who created the fake documents.”
Emily sat up.
“Who?”
Raymond hesitated.
Then handed her a photograph.
Emily looked at it.
Her blood ran cold.
It was a woman.
Older.
Elegant.
Standing beside Preston.
Emily recognized her immediately.
“That's Preston's mother.”
Raymond nodded.
“She wasn't just involved.”
Emily stared at the photograph.
“What was she doing?”
“She created the original plan.”
“To take my baby?”
“Yes.”
“And my money?”
“Yes.”
Emily's voice became quiet.
“Why?”
Raymond looked at her.
“Because your mother left you something they couldn't control.”
“What?”
“Power.”
Emily stared.
Raymond continued.
“And Preston's family believed that if they could control your child, they could eventually control everything your child would inherit.”
Emily looked down at her stomach.
Her expression changed.
“They weren't trying to take my baby.”
“No.”
“They were trying to use my baby to take the empire.”
Raymond nodded.
“Exactly.”
Emily slowly closed the folder.
For the first time, she felt something stronger than fear.
Anger.
Not wild anger.
Not reckless anger.
The cold kind.
The kind that makes a person stop asking why.
And start asking how.
“How do we destroy the documents?”
Raymond looked at her.
“We don't.”
Emily frowned.
“What?”
“We keep them.”
“Why?”
“Because they're evidence.”
He paused.
“And because tomorrow, we open the Saint Claire vault.”
Emily looked at him.
“And then?”
Raymond's eyes hardened.
“Then we find out who signed the documents before you ever saw them.”
Emily's hand rested over her unborn child.
The signature they had forged had been meant to erase her rights.
Instead, it had given her the evidence she needed.
Preston thought a fake signature would make Emily powerless.
He had made one mistake.
He had put his entire plan on paper.
And now every page was waiting to testify against him.
But there was still one question Emily couldn't answer.

Who was the mysterious Saint Claire?
And why had someone inside her own bloodline helped the Whitmores steal her future?
