Chapter 4 â The Brother Who Never Forgot

THE ATTORNEY WHO DESTROYED THE MAN WHO BETRAYED HIS SISTER
Chapter 4 â The Brother Who Never Forgot
People saw Harrison Cole as a dangerous man.
They saw the courtroom victories.
They saw the headlines.
They saw powerful executives lowering their voices when his name was mentioned.
They knew the attorney.
They knew the weapon.
But they did not know the brother.
They did not know the boy who once sat outside his little sisterâs bedroom door, promising her that nothing bad would ever happen while he was there.
They did not know the teenager who learned that protecting someone meant more than fighting their battles.
It meant standing beside them when everyone else walked away.
And they certainly did not know why Richard Harringtonâs betrayal had awakened something in Harrison that had been buried for years.
A promise.
A promise he made long before he became one of the most feared attorneys in the state.
The Boy Who Made A Promise
Twenty-five years earlier, Harrison Cole was seventeen years old.
He was not powerful.
He was not respected.
He was not feared.
He was just a teenager trying to protect his little sister.
Khloe was ten years old.
She was the kind of child who believed everyone had good intentions.
Even people who did not deserve her trust.
That was always her greatest strength.
And sometimes her greatest weakness.
Their father, Thomas Cole, was a hardworking man who loved his children but struggled with anger.
Their mother, Evelyn, spent years trying to keep peace inside the house.
Harrison remembered those nights clearly.
The raised voices.
The slammed doors.
The silence afterward.
The way Khloe would sit on the stairs holding her stuffed rabbit, pretending she was not scared.
One night changed everything.
Harrison found his mother crying in the kitchen.
Young Harrison did not know what to say.
He was only seventeen.
So he did the only thing he could.
He sat beside her.
The next morning, he made a promise to himself.
Never again would someone he loved feel powerless.
Years later, when Harrison became a lawyer, people assumed his ambition came from wanting money or fame.
They were wrong.
His ambition came from watching people lose their voices.
And he hated injustice more than he loved winning.
The Sister Who Always Believed In Him
When Harrison graduated from law school, Khloe was the first person waiting outside the ceremony.
She was holding flowers that were too large for her.
She was twenty years old.
"You did it!"
She smiled so proudly that Harrison almost laughed.
"You act like I won a championship."
"You did."
She handed him the flowers.
"You changed your life."
Harrison looked at his little sister.
The same girl he once protected.
Now she was the one reminding him that he mattered.
That was Khloe.
She always saw the good in people.
Even him.
The Mistake Harrison Regretted
Years later, when Khloe met Richard Harrington, Harrison was cautious.
Not because Richard was obviously dangerous.
That would have been easier.
Dangerous people were easy to recognize.
Richard was charming.
Polished.
Respectful.
He knew exactly what to say.
At their first dinner together, Richard smiled and said:
"Khloe deserves someone who takes care of her."
Harrison remembered those words.
He remembered believing them.
Because he wanted his sister to be happy.
When Khloe announced she was marrying Richard, Harrison pulled her aside.
"Are you sure?"
She smiled.
"Harry, you ask that about everyone."
"No."
He looked serious.
"Only people who matter."
Khloe hugged him.
"He loves me."
And Harrison wanted to believe her.
So he did something difficult.
He trusted someone else with his sister's heart.
That was the one mistake he could never forgive himself for.
The Moment He Knew Richard Had Failed
When Harrison saw the messages between Richard and Vanessa, something inside him changed.
Not because Richard had cheated.
Cheating was horrible.
But Harrison had seen enough broken marriages to understand that people could be selfish.
What disturbed him was the cruelty.
The planning.
The calculation.
Richard did not simply fall in love with someone else.
He created a strategy to destroy the woman who trusted him.
That was different.
Harrison remembered Khloe sitting alone in the hospital after her second miscarriage.
Richard had promised he would be there.
He arrived six hours late.
At the time, Khloe defended him.
"He's under pressure."
Harrison said nothing.
But he noticed.
He noticed every time Richard chose himself.
Every time Khloe made excuses.
Every time she became smaller so someone else could feel bigger.
Now he finally understood.
Richard had not changed.
Khloe had simply loved him enough to ignore who he was.
The Promise Renewed
Late one night, Harrison returned to his childhood home.
His mother had passed away years ago.
The house was quiet.
Empty.
But memories remained.
He stood in the old kitchen.
The same place where he once found his mother crying.
The same place where he made his first promise.
His phone rang.
Khloe.
He answered immediately.
"Are you okay?"
A small laugh came through.
"You always ask that before saying hello."
"Because I need to know."
There was silence.
Then she said:
"I had a dream."
"What kind?"
"I dreamed I was back in that house."
Harrison knew exactly what she meant.
Richard's house.
The place where she had spent years trying to build a family.
"What happened?"
"I was looking for my daughter."
Harrison became still.
"And?"
"I found her."
Her voice softened.
"But I also found myself."
Harrison closed his eyes.
Because that was the first time he heard something different.
Not fear.
Not pain.
Strength.
"Khloe."
"Yes?"
"You know this isn't your fault, right?"
A pause.
"I know."
Those two words meant everything.
Because the old Khloe would have apologized.
The old Khloe would have searched for what she did wrong.
The woman now standing beside Harrison understood something.
She had been betrayed.
But she was not defeated.
The Enemy Who Miscalculated
The next morning, Harrison received new information.
Richard had scheduled a press appearance.
He planned to control the story.
Claim that Khloe was unstable.
Claim that the divorce was mutual.
Claim that Harrison was interfering.
Daniel looked concerned.
"He's going public."
Harrison simply nodded.
"Good."
Daniel looked confused.
"Good?"
Harrison closed the investigation file.
"People like Richard always make the same mistake."
"What mistake?"
"They think the first person to tell the story wins."
A faint smile appeared.
"But the truth doesn't need to be first."
"It only needs to be complete."
That evening, Harrison stood outside the courthouse where he had won some of his biggest cases.
Tomorrow, he would begin the fight against Richard Harrington.
Not as a lawyer seeking victory.
As a brother keeping a promise.
Richard believed he was fighting a pregnant woman who had lost everything.
He believed he was fighting a lawyer with emotions clouding his judgment.
He was wrong.
He was fighting a man who had spent his entire life preparing for moments exactly like this.
A man who remembered every tear his sister cried.
Every night she felt alone.
Every moment she needed someone.
And now Harrison Cole had only one mission.
Make sure Richard Harrington never had the chance to hurt her again.
Because some promises are forgotten with time.
But some promises become a person's entire purpose.
May you like
And Harrison had never forgotten.
To be continued...
