Chapter 8 – The Day Richard Lost Control

THE ATTORNEY WHO DESTROYED THE MAN WHO BETRAYED HIS SISTER

Chapter 8 – The Day Richard Lost Control

Richard Harrington had always believed he was different from ordinary people.

Ordinary people panicked when things went wrong.

Ordinary people made emotional decisions.

Ordinary people lost control.

But Richard?

Richard Harrington was always calm.

Always polished.

Always two steps ahead.

That was the story he told himself.

For years, he had convinced everyone around him that nothing could touch him.

Not competitors.

Not journalists.

Not angry investors.

Not even his own mistakes.

But there was one thing Richard never prepared for.

A day when the world stopped believing him.

And that day had arrived.

The First File Goes Public

At 8:00 a.m., every major business publication received the same package.

A collection of documents.

Financial records.

Internal communications.

Transaction histories.

All connected to Harrington Commercial Group.

The source was anonymous.

But the evidence was not.

Within an hour, the internet exploded.

Questions flooded every platform.

"Did Harrington Commercial hide millions in company losses?"

"Luxury Developer Accused Of Secret Financial Transfers."

"CEO Richard Harrington Under Investigation."

Richard watched the headlines appear one by one from his office.

At first, he smiled.

A controlled smile.

A confident smile.

The same smile he used whenever people challenged him.

"This will disappear," he said.

His assistant stood quietly.

"Sir..."

Richard looked up.

"What?"

The assistant hesitated.

"The board members are already asking for explanations."

The smile disappeared.

The Man Who Could Not Control The Room

The emergency meeting began at noon.

Richard entered the boardroom expecting to dominate.

He wore the same expensive suit.

The same watch.

The same expression of confidence.

But something was different.

Nobody stood when he entered.

Nobody smiled.

Nobody complimented him.

They simply watched him.

And for the first time, Richard felt like an outsider inside his own company.

The chairman placed a folder on the table.

"Richard."

His voice was cold.

"We need answers."

Richard sat down.

"About what?"

The room went silent.

The chairman looked at him.

"Do not insult our intelligence."

A director pushed a document forward.

"These accounts are connected to companies controlled by you."

Richard glanced at the papers.

"I have no involvement with those companies."

A second document appeared.

"Then explain these signatures."

Another.

"Explain these transfers."

Another.

"Explain why your private accounts received payments from projects owned by Harrington Commercial."

For the first time...

Richard had no immediate response.

The Man Behind The Mask

Richard had spent his entire life preparing answers.

But answers only worked when people wanted to believe them.

And nobody in that room wanted to anymore.

"This is a misunderstanding."

His voice became sharper.

"I built this company."

The chairman stared at him.

"And that is exactly why we need to know whether you destroyed it."

The sentence hit harder than Richard expected.

Because his entire identity was built around being the man who saved Harrington Commercial.

Not the man who damaged it.

Vanessa Sees A Different Richard

Vanessa watched the meeting coverage from her apartment.

She expected Richard to win.

She expected him to destroy the accusations.

That was the man she knew.

The man who always had a solution.

But the person on the screen was different.

His answers were shorter.

His expression was harder.

His confidence looked forced.

For the first time, Vanessa noticed something Khloe had probably noticed years ago.

Richard was not fearless.

He was simply good at pretending.

Her phone rang.

Richard.

She stared at his name.

Then answered.

"What happened?"

His silence told her everything.

"They're trying to remove me."

Vanessa sat down.

"Can they?"

Another silence.

That answer was worse.

"Richard..."

She lowered her voice.

"Did you do this?"

The question changed everything.

Because she was no longer asking about rumors.

She was asking if she had built her future around a lie.

"You don't understand business."

His response was immediate.

Defensive.

Cold.

And Vanessa felt something break inside.

Not because he was angry.

Because he sounded exactly like the man who had convinced Khloe she was the problem.

The Visit To Khloe

That evening, Richard went to see Khloe.

He arrived without warning.

Harrison immediately noticed.

"He shouldn't be here."

Khloe looked through the window.

For a moment, she saw the man she married.

The man who once held her hand.

The man who promised they would grow old together.

Then she remembered the messages.

The lies.

The plans to abandon her.

"Let him in."

Harrison looked surprised.

"Khloe."

"I need to hear what he has to say."

Richard entered the room.

But this time, something was different.

He did not look powerful.

He looked exhausted.

"Khloe."

She waited.

No anger.

No tears.

Just silence.

"I know things have gotten out of control."

She almost laughed.

"Out of control?"

Richard looked away.

"I didn't want things to happen this way."

That sentence confirmed everything.

Because he still did not say:

"I hurt you."

"I betrayed you."

"I was wrong."

He only said:

"I didn't want things to happen this way."

Khloe looked at him carefully.

"Do you know what your problem is, Richard?"

He looked up.

"You think the worst thing you did was get caught."

Silence.

"The worst thing you did was believe I was someone you could destroy and still expect forgiveness."

For the first time...

Richard had nothing to say.

The Moment He Broke

Richard turned toward Harrison.

"This is what you wanted, isn't it?"

Harrison remained calm.

"You wanted my company destroyed."

"No."

Harrison looked directly at him.

"I wanted the truth exposed."

Richard laughed bitterly.

"Easy for you to say."

His voice rose.

"You have no idea what it took to build something like this."

Harrison stepped closer.

"No."

His voice remained quiet.

"I know exactly what it took."

"It took people trusting you."

"It took your wife standing beside you."

"It took employees believing in you."

"It took investors giving you opportunities."

He paused.

"And you repaid them by lying."

Richard's face changed.

Anger.

Real anger.

The carefully controlled mask finally disappeared.

"You think you're better than me?"

"No."

Harrison answered immediately.

"I think I'm responsible for what I do."

That was the difference.

The Final Loss Of Control

Richard turned toward Khloe.

"You really think he can protect you forever?"

Khloe said nothing.

"You think your brother will always be there?"

Still nothing.

Richard stepped forward.

Harrison immediately moved between them.

A silent warning.

Richard stopped.

Because even he understood.

This was no longer a legal battle.

This was a man who had crossed every line.

He looked at Khloe one last time.

"You'll regret this."

Khloe's expression did not change.

"No, Richard."

Her voice was calm.

"The only thing I regret..."

She paused.

"...is believing you were the man you pretended to be."

Richard left.

But he did not leave as a winner.

He left as a man who had finally realized something terrifying.

His money could not fix this.

His reputation could not fix this.

His charm could not fix this.

Because the person he underestimated the most...

was the woman he thought would never fight back.

That night, Richard Harrington sat alone in his mansion.

The same mansion where he once believed he owned everything.

His phone kept ringing.

Investors.

Lawyers.

Board members.

But he ignored every call.

For the first time in his life...

Richard had lost control.

And the scariest part was not that he was falling.

May you like

It was that Harrison Cole had not even finished pushing.
