Chapter 10

The Brother Nobody Mentioned

Every powerful family has secrets.

Some hide illegitimate fortunes.

Others hide forgotten scandals.

The Carter family had hidden something far more dangerous.

A man whose name had quietly disappeared from every family photograph.

A man no one ever mentioned.

Yet somehow...

Every trail now led back to him.

Detective Sarah Monroe stood in front of the investigation board before sunrise.

Photographs of Margaret, Dr. Steven Collins, Victor Hale, and the missing witness, Thomas Walker, covered nearly every inch of the wall.

One empty space remained.

Sarah pinned a newly printed file in the center.

Across the top was a single name.

Richard Carter.

Officer Ben Lawson looked puzzled.

"I've never heard of him."

Sarah nodded.

"Neither has anyone else."

The file had been discovered while reviewing Jonathan Carter's original inheritance documents.

Richard Carter.

Born three years before Jonathan.

Declared deceased at age twenty-eight.

Cause of death:

House fire.

But something about the records didn't make sense.

There was no death certificate.

No autopsy.

No funeral photographs.

Only a single newspaper clipping announcing the tragic loss.

Sarah frowned.

"People don't disappear this completely unless someone wants them forgotten."

At the hospital...

Ava was practicing with a cane for the first time.

Every step was shaky.

Every movement painful.

Yet each day she grew stronger.

Daniel Reyes smiled proudly.

"You've made more progress in one week than Collins predicted in two years."

Ava laughed quietly.

"Maybe because Collins never wanted me to recover."

The smile quickly faded.

Ethan walked beside her.

"I found something strange."

He handed her an old family album recovered from the mansion library.

Nearly every page featured Jonathan Carter.

Margaret.

Young Ethan.

Charity events.

Birthdays.

Vacations.

But one page had clearly been altered.

A photograph had been removed.

Only torn edges remained.

Someone had carefully erased a person from the family's history.

Back at police headquarters...

Sarah contacted the state archives.

An elderly archivist answered.

"Richard Carter?"

A long silence followed.

"I remember that name."

Sarah leaned forward.

"You do?"

"He wasn't supposed to die."

"What do you mean?"

"There were rumors."

"The fire investigation ended unusually fast."

Sarah immediately requested every surviving record.

Most had been destroyed.

Except one.

A faded insurance claim.

Claim filed by:

Margaret Carter.

Date:

Three weeks after Richard supposedly died.

Sarah frowned.

"Margaret wasn't even married into the family yet."

The archivist hesitated.

"Exactly."

Meanwhile...

Officer Lawson traced Victor Hale's financial history.

One transaction immediately caught his attention.

Twenty years earlier...

Victor had purchased an abandoned vineyard outside Napa.

Ownership transferred six months later.

To Richard Carter.

Lawson stared at the screen.

"That's impossible."

Richard had supposedly been dead.

Sarah immediately ordered a search warrant.

The abandoned vineyard had long since fallen into ruin.

Vines grew wild across broken fences.

The farmhouse windows were boarded shut.

Inside...

Everything was covered in dust.

Except one room.

Fresh footprints marked the wooden floor.

Someone had been there recently.

Ben forced open a locked basement door.

The stale air smelled of mold and gasoline.

Flashlights swept across old filing cabinets.

Broken furniture.

Rotting boxes.

Then Sarah noticed a steel safe hidden beneath a torn canvas.

Inside were ledgers.

Cash.

Several passports.

All bearing different names.

But using the same photograph.

Victor Hale.

One passport stopped Sarah cold.

Name:

Richard Jonathan Carter.

Issue Date:

Only eighteen months earlier.

She slowly looked up.

"Richard never died."

At county detention...

Margaret was informed detectives had searched the vineyard.

For the first time since her arrest...

She demanded to make a phone call.

Denied.

She slammed both hands onto the metal table.

"You don't understand."

The correctional officer remained calm.

"Understand what?"

Margaret whispered,

"If they find him..."

"...everything is over."

Later that evening...

Ethan sat beside Ava in the hospital garden.

The setting sun painted the flowers gold.

She rested her head lightly against his shoulder.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally she asked,

"Do you think your mother ever loved me?"

Ethan answered honestly.

"I think..."

"She loved control."

Silence followed.

Then Ava smiled sadly.

"That's not the same thing."

"No."

"It isn't."

Detective Monroe's phone rang just after dusk.

It was the forensic laboratory.

"We've identified fingerprints from the vineyard."

Sarah asked,

"Victor?"

"Yes."

"And one more."

She waited.

"The prints match Jonathan Carter."

Sarah froze.

"Jonathan died five years ago."

"We know."

"Which means those fingerprints were left before he died."

She frowned.

"What was Jonathan doing at the vineyard?"

Hours later...

The answer arrived from another source.

Jonathan's former attorney, Samuel Greene, requested an emergency meeting.

The elderly lawyer carried a sealed envelope marked:

To Be Opened Only If Jonathan Carter Dies Under Suspicious Circumstances.

Sarah carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Jonathan's words were steady.

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect my family.

Sarah continued reading.

Richard is alive. Margaret convinced everyone he died years ago. The truth is far worse. Richard has spent decades hiding the family's illegal fortune through Victor Hale's companies. I discovered them stealing from Carter Holdings. When I threatened to expose them, Margaret warned me that accidents happen to stubborn men.

The room became deathly silent.

Lawson whispered,

"Jonathan knew."

Sarah nodded.

"He knew everything."

She turned the page.

The final paragraph was written in hurried handwriting.

If anything happens to Ethan's wife, don't believe Margaret. Ava was never the real target. She was simply the easiest way to control my son.

Sarah lowered the letter slowly.

Ava had never been chosen at random.

She had been part of a much larger plan.

One that began long before Ethan met her.

One that stretched back decades.

And somewhere...

A man the world believed had died in a fire...

Was still alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

And now...

May you like

Very likely hunting every witness who could expose him.
