Chapter 2

The Poison in Every Glass

Poison doesn't always come in a bottle marked Danger.

Sometimes...

It comes in a vitamin container.

A cup of tea.

A bowl of soup.

Or a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice served with a loving smile.

For nearly two years...

Ava had unknowingly swallowed trust before she swallowed poison.

The following morning, the intensive care wing of St. Gabriel Medical Center was unusually busy.

Doctors moved quickly between consultation rooms.

Laboratory technicians rushed blood samples to the toxicology department.

Outside Ava's room, Ethan stood motionless, staring through the glass window.

His wife slept peacefully.

For the first time in months...

She looked calm.

Not because she was heavily medicated.

But because every drug in her body was finally being removed.

Dr. Rachel Morgan approached with a thick medical file.

"Mr. Carter?"

Ethan turned immediately.

"Tell me the truth."

She didn't soften her words.

"Someone has been poisoning your wife."

The sentence echoed inside his mind.

Poisoning.

Not overdosing.

Not prescribing the wrong medication.

Poisoning.

Dr. Morgan laid several laboratory reports across the table.

"The sedatives found in Mrs. Carter's bloodstream aren't part of her rehabilitation treatment."

Ethan frowned.

"Then where did they come from?"

"We don't know yet."

She pointed toward one page.

"But they've been administered repeatedly."

"Small doses."

"Every single day."

She looked into his eyes.

"That's why nobody noticed."

Ethan sat down heavily.

He remembered countless mornings.

Margaret standing in the kitchen.

Preparing Ava's breakfast herself.

Insisting she drink fresh juice.

Making vitamin smoothies.

Even personally bringing tea to Ava every night.

At the time...

He had admired his mother's devotion.

Now every memory made him feel sick.

Dr. Morgan continued.

"The sedatives caused muscle weakness."

"Memory impairment."

"Dizziness."

"Delayed neurological recovery."

She paused.

"Whoever did this wanted your wife to remain dependent."

Ethan whispered,

"So she would never walk again."

The doctor nodded silently.

Across the city...

Detective Sarah Monroe supervised the forensic search of the Carter mansion.

Every medication bottle inside the kitchen and pantry was photographed.

Every vitamin container was seized.

Officer Ben Lawson entered carrying a cardboard evidence box.

"You'll want to see this."

Sarah opened it.

Inside were twelve identical vitamin bottles.

Each labeled:

Daily Recovery Supplements

She unscrewed one lid.

The capsules looked perfectly ordinary.

The forensic chemist standing beside her carefully opened one.

White powder spilled onto the testing tray.

After several minutes...

He looked up.

"These aren't vitamins."

Sarah folded her arms.

"What are they?"

"A custom mixture."

"Mostly sedatives."

"And something else."

"What?"

He frowned.

"A memory suppressant."

Back at the hospital...

Lena sat nervously outside Ava's room.

She had barely slept.

Ethan approached quietly.

She immediately stood.

"I'm sorry."

He looked confused.

"For what?"

"I should have told you sooner."

Ethan sat beside her.

"Tell me everything now."

Lena took a long breath.

"I started working here three years ago."

"Mrs. Margaret seemed kind."

"She treated everyone politely."

"But after Mrs. Ava's accident..."

"Everything changed."

Flashback.

One year earlier.

Lena carried breakfast upstairs.

She accidentally entered Ava's room before Margaret arrived.

Ava smiled weakly.

"You made the juice today?"

Lena nodded.

"I thought Mrs. Margaret always does."

Ava looked surprised.

"No."

"She never lets anyone else prepare it."

Just then...

Margaret entered.

The smile on her face disappeared.

She took the tray from Lena without a word.

The next day...

Lena was transferred to cleaning duties.

Forbidden from entering Ava's room.

"I thought she simply wanted privacy."

Lena whispered.

"But then..."

She reached into her purse.

Carefully removing her phone.

"I started recording."

She opened a folder.

Thirty-seven audio files.

Twenty-one videos.

Hundreds of photographs.

Ethan stared.

"You've been collecting evidence?"

Lena nodded.

"I knew nobody would believe a maid."

"So I made sure the truth could speak for itself."

One video began playing.

Margaret stood alone inside the kitchen.

She crushed several white tablets into orange juice.

Then stirred until the powder disappeared completely.

Her voice was clearly audible.

"She'll never suspect a thing."

Ethan felt his stomach twist.

Another video.

Margaret replacing prescription labels.

Another.

Margaret locking Ava's medication cabinet.

Another.

Margaret whispering into the phone.

"The dosage needs to be stronger."

The room became silent.

Ethan covered his face.

"I trusted her."

Lena's eyes filled with tears.

"So did Mrs. Ava."

Meanwhile...

Detective Monroe received another report.

The forensic team had searched Margaret's private bedroom.

Officer Lawson placed another evidence box onto the table.

"This came from inside her walk-in closet."

Sarah opened it.

Hidden beneath folded blankets was a locked steel case.

Inside...

Dozens of prescription bottles.

Different labels.

Different doctors.

Different pharmacies.

The dates covered almost three years.

Sarah frowned.

"That's impossible."

The forensic pharmacist examined them.

"No."

"It isn't."

"These prescriptions were written under twelve different patient names."

"Most of those patients don't exist."

Officer Lawson quietly asked,

"Identity fraud?"

Sarah nodded.

"And organized."

At the same moment...

Margaret sat inside an interview room at the police station.

Her attorney calmly folded his hands.

"Answer only what is necessary."

Margaret smiled confidently.

"I've done nothing wrong."

Detective Monroe entered carrying one clear evidence bag.

Inside...

The vitamin bottle.

Sarah placed it on the table.

"Recognize this?"

Margaret glanced once.

"Yes."

"I bought supplements for Ava."

Sarah nodded.

"They contain prescription sedatives."

Margaret didn't blink.

"Someone tampered with them."

Sarah placed another item on the table.

The kitchen surveillance photographs.

Margaret crushing pills.

Margaret pouring powder into juice.

Margaret sealing the bottle again.

Still...

Margaret remained calm.

"Those images are fake."

Sarah leaned forward.

"You know what surprises me?"

Margaret smiled politely.

"What?"

"You never once asked whether Ava survived."

For the first time...

Margaret hesitated.

Only briefly.

But long enough.

Back at the hospital...

Ava finally woke fully.

Ethan sat beside her bed.

He gently held her hand.

"I'm sorry."

She looked confused.

"For what?"

"For failing to see."

Tears formed in his eyes.

"I thought Mom was protecting you."

Ava smiled sadly.

"I did too."

Silence filled the room.

Finally, Ava whispered,

"I tried to tell you."

"I know."

"But every time..."

"I believed her."

He lowered his head.

"I failed you."

Ava squeezed his fingers weakly.

"No."

"She fooled us both."

Just then...

Dr. Morgan entered carrying another scan.

"I have more news."

Ethan stood.

"What is it?"

"The sedatives explain much of Mrs. Carter's condition."

She placed the MRI images onto the light board.

"But something else doesn't."

She pointed toward Ava's spinal injury.

"The damage is inconsistent."

"Inconsistent?"

Dr. Morgan nodded.

"According to the original surgical records..."

"The injury should have improved significantly by now."

She looked toward Ava.

"Yet someone kept documenting the opposite."

Ethan frowned.

"Are you saying..."

"The medical records were altered."

The room fell silent.

Someone hadn't simply poisoned Ava.

Someone had rewritten her entire medical history.

Late that night...

Detective Monroe received one final forensic report.

She read it once.

Then again.

Officer Lawson looked at her.

"What now?"

Sarah slowly lowered the document.

"The prescription numbers."

"What about them?"

"They all trace back to one physician."

"Who?"

Sarah's expression hardened.

"Dr. Steven Collins."

Lawson searched the database.

His face changed instantly.

"He wasn't just Ava's rehabilitation physician."

"He personally signed every progress report after the crash."

Sarah nodded.

"And according to hospital records..."

"He officially retired six months ago."

Lawson frowned.

"So where is he now?"

Before Sarah could answer...

Her phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Then quietly said,

"Understood."

She ended the call.

"What happened?"

Sarah looked toward the evidence board.

"Dr. Collins' house is empty."

"The neighbors say he disappeared three days ago."

She stared at Margaret's smiling photograph pinned to the investigation wall.

Someone was cleaning up loose ends.

And the person running...

May you like

Almost certainly knew far more than poison alone.
