Chapter 12

Chapter 12

The Chase

Some people run because they are guilty.

Others run because they know the truth is finally catching them.

Richard Carter had spent twenty years disappearing.

Changing names.

Moving money.

Erasing evidence.

Building a life in the shadows.

But shadows only protect people until someone turns on the light.

And now...

The light was everywhere.

The moment Detective Sarah Monroe learned Richard Carter was alive, the entire investigation changed.

A man who had existed only as a dead name on old documents had become the center of the biggest criminal case the department had ever handled.

Sarah stood in front of the evidence board.

Richard's photograph was placed beside Margaret's.

Brother and sister.

Two people who had spent decades controlling the Carter empire from behind closed doors.

Officer Ben Lawson entered carrying a folder.

"We found his latest identity."

Sarah turned.

"Who is he now?"

Ben placed the file down.

Robert Hale.

Age fifty-eight.

Business consultant.

No criminal history.

No known relatives.

Sarah looked through the records.

"Where is he?"

Ben hesitated.

"That's the problem."

Richard had already vanished.

His office was empty.

His apartment had been abandoned.

His bank accounts had been drained.

His passport records showed multiple international trips under different names.

He wasn't running from the law.

He had been preparing for this moment.

At St. Gabriel Medical Center...

Ava watched the news report from her hospital room.

A photograph of Richard Carter appeared on the screen.

She felt a strange chill.

"I've seen him."

Ethan looked up.

"What?"

She pointed at the screen.

"Not recently."

"But before the crash."

Ethan sat beside her.

"Are you sure?"

Ava closed her eyes.

The memory returned slowly.

The rain.

The road.

The black SUV.

A man standing near Margaret.

"I thought he was just someone helping her."

She swallowed.

"But he looked at me differently."

"Like he already knew me."

Detective Monroe immediately went to the hospital.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"Anything you remember could help."

Ava thought carefully.

"He said something."

Sarah leaned closer.

"What?"

Ava whispered,

"Margaret called him Richard."

The room became silent.

"She said..."

"Richard, hurry."

Sarah exchanged a look with Ethan.

The final piece had fallen into place.

Meanwhile...

Margaret sat inside the detention center watching the same news report.

Richard's photograph appeared again.

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Anger.

She picked up the phone and demanded a call.

When her attorney arrived, she spoke immediately.

"Find him."

The attorney frowned.

"You want us to help Richard?"

"No."

Her voice was cold.

"I want him found before the police find him."

The attorney stared.

"You turned on your own brother?"

Margaret smiled bitterly.

"My brother stopped being useful years ago."

Outside the detention center...

Sarah received an urgent message.

The FBI had traced a large withdrawal.

Five million dollars.

Taken from an offshore account connected to Victor Hale.

The destination?

A private airfield outside Nevada.

Sarah grabbed her coat.

"He isn't leaving the country."

Ben looked surprised.

"How do you know?"

"Because Richard doesn't run."

"He disappears."

At the private airfield...

A black SUV moved through the gates.

Inside sat Richard Carter.

Older than his photographs.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

He looked nothing like a desperate fugitive.

Because he wasn't afraid.

He believed he was untouchable.

The pilot approached.

"Everything is ready."

Richard nodded.

"Good."

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

"Running away?"

Richard smiled.

"Margaret."

"You sound nervous."

She laughed softly.

"You were always arrogant."

"And you were always dramatic."

Silence.

Then Margaret said,

"They have the recording."

Richard's expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

"The final recording?"

"Yes."

For the first time...

Richard looked concerned.

"Where did they find it?"

"Does it matter?"

Margaret replied.

"They have everything."

Richard looked toward the airplane.

"Then we leave now."

Before he could board...

Police vehicles surrounded the airfield.

Sirens echoed across the runway.

Richard stared through the windshield.

Detective Monroe stepped out holding a microphone.

"Richard Carter!"

"You are surrounded!"

The pilot immediately raised his hands.

Richard remained seated.

Calm.

Almost amused.

Sarah approached carefully.

"You know this ends here."

Richard stepped out.

"I don't think you understand what you're dealing with."

She frowned.

"Oh?"

He smiled.

"The Carter family survived because people like me made difficult decisions."

"You mean crimes."

"No."

He corrected.

"Survival."

Sarah watched him closely.

"Your sister poisoned her daughter-in-law."

"Your brother-in-law died suspiciously."

"A woman was nearly killed."

"And you call that survival?"

Richard looked toward the sky.

"History is written by the people who win."

Sarah replied,

"Not anymore."

As Richard was placed under arrest, his expression finally changed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Calculation.

Because he knew something.

Something nobody else did.

Later that evening...

Detective Monroe interrogated Richard.

The room was quiet.

She placed photographs across the table.

Ava.

Margaret.

Collins.

Victor.

"You were involved in all of this."

Richard looked at the photos.

"I was involved in protecting my family's legacy."

"By destroying innocent people?"

He shrugged.

"Collateral damage."

Sarah felt disgusted.

"Did you cause the crash?"

Richard smiled faintly.

"No."

A pause.

"Margaret did."

Sarah leaned forward.

"But you were there."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Richard looked amused.

"To make sure the plan worked."

The confession was not complete.

But it was enough.

Hours later...

Sarah received another call.

The hospital.

Her expression changed.

Ben noticed.

"What happened?"

She looked at him.

"It's Margaret."

"What about her?"

"She escaped."

Everyone froze.

Impossible.

Margaret was under maximum security.

The cameras.

The guards.

The locked doors.

Yet somehow...

She was gone.

Security footage showed only one strange detail.

At 2:17 a.m., a prison doctor entered Margaret's cell.

The doctor left twelve minutes later.

No alarms.

No struggle.

No forced entry.

Sarah requested the doctor's identity.

The answer appeared on screen.

Dr. Steven Collins.

Ben stared.

"But Collins is dead."

Sarah looked at the footage again.

The man entering the cell had the same face.

Same walk.

Same voice.

She slowly whispered,

"No."

"He was never dead."

At the same moment...

A black car traveled along a deserted highway.

Inside...

Margaret sat beside Dr. Collins.

She looked furious.

"You promised me everything was handled."

Collins smiled.

"And you promised you had destroyed the recordings."

Neither spoke.

After a moment, Margaret looked out the window.

"Where are we going?"

Collins answered calmly.

"Somewhere no one will find us."

Back at the hospital...

Ava stood by the window watching police lights in the distance.

Ethan stood beside her.

"Are you scared?"

She thought for a moment.

"No."

"Why?"

Because for two years...

She had been trapped.

Controlled.

Silenced.

But now...

Everyone who tried to break her was running.

And she was standing.

Detective Monroe looked at the final investigation report.

Richard arrested.

Victor exposed.

Collins alive.

Margaret missing.

The case was not over.

It had only entered its most dangerous stage.

Because the people who had spent decades hiding the truth...

Were now fighting to survive.

And desperate people...

May you like

Were capable of anything.
